ORAVITA

Situated in the south west of Caras Severin


County, with a strong cultural heritage, Oravia today
is the result of a habitat developments from Banat,
Romania and Mitteleuropa, a millenary history, with
traditions from prehistoric times, ancient and medieval
history.

However, in modern times, the first


documentary mention, as Oravita town, dates from
1697, but the top evolutions is recorded after the 1720, when the Imperial Banat region , as a part of
political structures from Wien, with rich resources of soil and subsoil, it becomes an important mining
and metallurgy center, also an agricultural and forestry center.

Oravita becomes the place where this industrial headquarters worked, so, after 1918, the city
status increased to county capital.

After 1950, the town has been developed as an


powerful mining center, until 1990, when this industry has
fallen, generating an economic impasse affecting the city
nowadays.

Naturally, today already requires a reassessment of


possibilities and human and material resources, through the natural, cultural and tourism potential,
cultivating historical traditions.

Oravita was always a multiethnic space from Mitteleurope, almost every ethnicity having
representatives here, animated by a strong sense of solidarity. For instance, The Founding Committee
of Old Theatre, during 1815 1817, that counts 12 nations : the macedo-romanian Ion Niuni, the
czech Prokop Lhotka, and his wife, born Maderspach the donors of the land, the german Ieronimus
Platzger - artist, the french Francisc Knee - engineer, the slovak Johann Jablinsky, the romanian
Petru Iorgovici, the italian David Nataly, the serbian Ion
Demetrovici, the croat Martin Pavlovits, the jew Francz
Rothmayer, the hungarien Jozsef Fulopp, the polish Peter
Wierzbiczky famous physician.

Nowadays, Oravita can develop only through the direct


support of zonal and governmental decision makers.
One direction may be attracting foreign and important investors to create new jobs. Another
direction is represented by the natural, tourism potential, the natural resources.

Tourism objectives:

Old Theater MIHAI EMINESCU the first building of its kind in Romanian culture,
founded on 1817, after de model of Wien Burgtheater.
The oldest mountain pharmacy - The KNOBLAUCH museum founded on 1763 as
a hand pharmacy.
Oravita Anina Railway The first mountain railway in the
country, 33.4 km length, 14 tunnels, 10 viaducts, offers a
breathtaking view to tourists, through the beauty and wilderness of
the landscape.
Oravita train station first train station in the country that use a
elevator to access the platform, built in 1849.
The orthodox monastery Calugara built in 1861, blessed
place of pilgrimage
The roman-catholic monastery Maria Ciclova built in 1727,
based on a legend of an icon dating from ancient times.
