As the title would suggest, it follows the travels of the legendary sword Excalibur through Arthurian myth,
from the violent, powerful hands of Uther Pendragon, to a long-years' rest in the stone to being redrawn by

The film was produced without having a script, but

worked off a rich plot and deeply developed characters.
In fact, Miyazakis films never had scripts. I don't have
the story finished and ready when we start work on a
film, the filmmaker told Midnight Eye. I usually don't
have the time. So the story develops when I start
drawing storyboards. The production starts very soon
thereafter, while the storyboards are still developing. Miyazaki prefers to let the plot grow organically,
stating It's not me who makes the film. The film makes itself and I have no choice but to follow

Miyazaki wrote, directed, and storyboarded the film and thus is it a production that very much captures the
vision of its creator. He is notoriously one of the most influential and highly involved creators in animation,
a trait that no doubt contributes to the unique beauty of his work.

The main character, Chihiro, was inspired by the daughter of one of Miyazakis friends. After announcing his
retirement in 1997, the famed creator spent time on a cabin getaway with friends, including a friends
apathetic and pre-teen daughter who inspired him to create a film for regular ten year olds. He felt there
was not much content out there for that demographic, with most magazines focusing on romance and
crushes. I felt this was not what they held dear in their hearts, not what they wanted, the filmmaker
recalled. And so I wondered if I could make a movie in which they could be heroines. The girls needed

someone human to relate to and show them that they could be heroines too. The main character, Chihiro,
was made with the girls from the cabin in mind. Every time I wrote or drew something concerning the
character of Chihiro and her actions, I asked myself the question whether my friend's daughter or her
friends would be capable of doing it, Miyazaki explained.

Quiet scenes of inaction, such as characters staring into the distance, are called ma, which means
emptiness in Japanese, and are a frequent occurrence in Miyazakis films. In an interview with Roger
Ebert, Miyazaki explained the usefulness of these. "If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space
at all, it's just busyness, But if you take a moment, then the tension building in the film can grow into a
wider dimension. If you just have constant tension at 80 degrees all the time you just get numb."

It was the first anime film to be nominated (and win) an Academy Award, which is earned for Best
Animated Feature in 2003. Despite this, Miyazaki declined to attend the ceremony. While he did not
express why at the time, he did later reveal in 2009 that it was because he was against Americas invasion
of Iraq, but the producer of Spirited Away requested that he did not vocalize these opinions.

The character No Face greatly resembles a silkworm, an important animal in Japanese culture. No face
seems to have a white face and a mouth below it. Silkworms have markings that look like facial features,
and their mouths are below these markings. Silkworms and No Face eat constantly and grow rapidly. At the
end of the movie, No Face goes with Sen to visit Zeniba. No Face stays with Zeniba spinning silk. His inital
sketches were quite different to the finished product and, although retaining the same mask, featured
green hair, and a body covered in white stars and golden swirls.
