What are lines?

In Art, a line represents many things such as an actual line, a person, or a building. A line can
be thick or thin; straight, wavy, curved or angular; continuous or broken; dotted, dashed, or a
combination of any of these. A line is an identifiable path created by a point moving in space. It
is one-dimensional and can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define the edges of
a form. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin. They lead
your eye around the composition and can communicate information through their character and
direction.

Types of Lines

1. Static Lines- lines that are generally straight, either vertical or horizontal. Static lines produce
an element of stillness; they're used to depict or "describe" objects at rest. They suggest
firmness and straightforwardness.

a. Vertical lines- These lines convey uprightness, dignity, and

assurance. Vertical lines communicate a feeling of loftiness and
spirituality. Erect lines seem to extend upwards beyond human reach,
toward the sky. They often dominate public architecture, from
cathedrals to corporate headquarters. Extended perpendicular lines
suggest an overpowering grandeur, beyond ordinary human
measure.

b. Horizontal lines- These lines suggest calmness, peace and

sobriety. Horizontal line suggests a feeling of rest or repose. Objects
parallel to the earth are at rest in relation to gravity. Therefore
compositions in which horizontal lines dominate tend to be quiet and
restful in feeling.

2. Dynamic Lines- These signify movements, cheerfulness,

and continuity. Dynamic movement is characterized
by movement of the eye that flows smoothly from one area of
the composition to another, guided by continuations of line or
form, and by gradations of color or form. Dynamic movement is
characterized by open shapes or shapes that closely relate to
adjacent shapes.

3. Jagged Lines- These lines give the impression of chaos and

disorder. It also suggests turmoil and anxiety.
