INTRODUCTION
Electrical Energy already constitutes more than 30 % of all energy usage on Earth. Large
part of the electrical energy production is used to be converted into mechanical energy via
different kinds of electric motors - DC Motors, Synchronous Motors and Induction Motors.
Induction Motors account for more than 85% of all motors used in industry and domestic
applications. In the past they have been used as constant-speed motors as traditional speed
control methods have been less efficient than speed control methods for DC motors.
Induction Motors are often termed the Workhorse of the Industry. This is because it is one
of the most widely used motors in the world. It is used in transportation and industries, and
also in household appliances and laboratories.
In Industries Variable Frequency Drives are usually available as a Product hence it is very
difficult for the users to understand the internal working and complete operation of the drive.
Hence for the proper understanding of the working principle of drive, it is necessary to
provide internal test points to view/monitor the Waveforms.
This report presents the need of Speed Control in Induction Motors. Out of the various
methods of controlling Induction motors, V/f Control has proven to be the most versatile.
The overall scheme of implementing V/f control has been presented. One of the basic
requirements of this scheme is the PWM Inverter. In this, PWM Inverters have been
designed and their outputs fed to the Induction Motor drives. It is expected that using a
Variable Frequency drive with a PWM Inverter is a very superior way of controlling the
speed of an Induction motor while maintaining a constant maximum torque.
It is almost impossible to give detail treatment to such cutting edge technologies in regular
theory, practical classes. Hence the proposed system will provide the following advantages:
The project aims at developing an E-learning platform for remote monitoring and control of
an Induction motor using Variable Frequency drive
5
The proposed system also serves the following objectives:
Obtaining Constant Torque condition for variable loads for certain range of speeds
To design a control Panel for user-friendly control of the system
To design a GUI in LabVIEW for remote Monitoring of the System
To develop a webpage for remote monitoring and control of the proposed system
In order to do that, one must be familiar with the PWM Inverter which drives the
induction motor. The aim of the proposed prototype is to develop a experimental setup for
better understanding of theoretical as well as practical aspect of VFD in industries. Hence
this system can be used to demonstrate the VFD Drive by means of PWM Inverter
method. This experimental setup can be included as an experiment in curriculum. Students
or user will not only be able to understand the operation of VFD Drive but will also be
able to understand its efficiency. The users can also monitor and control the setup through
remote collection using web-page facility.

WORK DONE AND RESULTS
1. Generation of PWM Pulses for Gate driver Circuit
The PWM pulses were produced using PWM generation module of DSP processor
with the help of reference square wave signal
The PWM frequency was synced to the input square wave frequency by capturing
its rising edge

Fig.(d): Varying PWM Duty Cycle
The PWM frequency is synced to the reference signal and its Duty Cycle was
varied using a Potentiometer
The DC value provided by potentiometer interfaced to ADC of the Digital Signal
Processor is used to write into the PWM duty Cycle Control Registers. It controls
the Pulse Width
