Question #01
A ferromagnetic core with a relative permeability of 1500 is shown in Figure 1. The
dimensions are as shown in the diagram and the depth of the core is 7 cm. The air gaps on
the left and right sides of the core are 0.070 and 0.050 cm. respectively. Because of
fringing effects, the effective area of the air gaps is 5 percent larger than their physical
size. If there are 400 turns in the coil wrapped around the center leg of the core and if the
current in the coil is 1.0 A. what is the flux in each of the left, center and right legs of the
core? What is the flux density in each air gap?

Question#02
A 20-kVA 8000/200-V distribution transformer has series impedance, referred to the
primary side, of 80+j200 ohm. The components of the excitation branch referred to the
primary side are Rc = 288 k and XM =64 k.

(a) If the primary voltage is 8000 V and the load impedance is ZL = 3.0 + j 1.5,
what is the secondary voltage and voltage regulation of the transformer?
(b) If the secondary voltage is 200 V and the load impedance is ZL = 3.0 - j 1.5,
what is the primary voltage and voltage regulation of the transformer?
(c) Draw phasor diagrams for parts (a) and (b) clearly indicating magnitudes and
phase angles of primary voltage, referred to secondary side, with respect
secondary voltage VS.

Question # 03
A 13.2-kV single-phase generator supplies power to a load through a transmission line.
The loads impedance is Zload = 500 36.87, and the transmission lines impedance is
Zline=60 53.1.

(a) If the generator is directly connected to the load, what is the ratio of the load voltage
to the generated voltage? What are the transmission losses of the system?

(b) If a 1:10 step-up transformer is placed at the output of the generator and a 10:1
transformer is placed at the load end of the transmission line, what is the new ratio of the
load voltage to the generated voltage? What are the transmission losses of the system
now?

Question # 04
The following data was obtained from testing a 48-kVA, 400/240, step down transformer:

Voltage (V) Current (A) Power (W)

Open circuit test: 240 2 120

(Performed on
secondary)

Short circuit test: 150 10 600

(Performed on Primary)

Determine the equivalent circuit of the transformer as viewed from (a) the high-voltage
side and (b) the low voltage side
