A PURPOSE:-
This document is prepared to guide the operating personnel for managing the turbine side drains during a unit startup ,
shutdown & normal operating condition in stage- II of NTPC /TSTPS .
B SCOPE: :-
This shall be applicable to all the 4 units of stage - II , TSTPS ( 4 X 500 MW Units ) .
C INTRODUCTION : -
Drains play an important role in any system charged with steam . This is basically provided to drain out
the condensate before charging steam in a pipeline & subsequently allows sufficient flow in the line for initial warm
up . Also this allows to drain the condensate during cooling of any pipeline .Normally the big headers like MS
/CRH / HRH are provided with drain pots where the condensate is expected to collect & subsequently they are
drained by operation of these drain valves . To avoid human interventions some of the drains depending on their
location & importance severity they are interlocked with certain logics or instruments like level switches & so on .
If the condensate is not properly drained & steam is charged into a line , then it will lead to severe
hammering in the line causing major damages & sometime forced outage of the units due to failure of the
support system . Hence due care is to be taken while operating these drains .
Each Motor Operated drain is provided with a manual isolating valve for isolation of the drain valve
depending on requirement . But in case of MAW 11 drain valve no isolation valve is provided . However a bypass
line with 6-10 mm orifice is provided for continuous bleeding .Some systems are provided with orifice operated
continuous drains for continuous bleeding of steam /condensate .At some places drains are provided with steam drain
traps which should always be kept in service .

D-2.1.3. Open MS/HRH Strainers drains to SDFT MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106 ( Operated from BHEL CRT ) immediately
after turbine tip out . On auto these drains open at SGC Shutdown programme at step 53 .
D-2.1.4. Open CRH Hdr Drain CRH 501 to SDFT . This drain actually operates on auto based on the Drain Pot Level
Switch actuation .
D-2.1.5. Ensure all the manual valves ( if anyone was closed ) of drains connected to the SDFT /FB-1& FB -2 / LP & HP FT
are opened as per the list attached as soon the unit has tripped .
D-2.1.6. Now ensure the temperatures are picking up down stream of the drain as soon as soon as steam flow established
( where ever on line measurement provided)
D-2.1.7. Now as the turbine rolling started the MS/HRH Strainers drains MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106 gets closed at step
13 .
D-2.1.8. After Unit is synchronisation & Load pick up is > 100 MW ensure all the following drains are closed on auto
MAL 11 Drain Before HPCV - 1 MAL 12 Drain Before HPCV - 2
MAL 26 Drain Before IV - 1 MAL 27 Drain Before IV - 2
MAL 65 Drain Before CRH NRV
MAL 31 Drain After IV - 1
MAL 32 Drain After IV - 2
D-2.1.9. Ensure the Extraction line drains are closed after the respective Extractions are charged .
D-2.1.10. Check all the TDBFP drains are closed after TDBFPs are loaded .

D-2.2.9. The temp points provided for the major drains are functioning indicated by the rise in temp when ever steam
flows in those drain .
D-2.2.10. For Charging HP/LP Bypass the HPBP Warm up Line Drains
D-2.2.11. Normally the drains are kept closed as soon as sufficient steam flow is established in the system . Such as
Close MS Line drains to IBD ( MS401/402) once the Main MS SV are full open .
Close the CRH hdr atmospheric drain after HP/LP bypass is charged & sufficient steam coming .
Close the MS /HRH Hdr Drains MS 417/419 , HRH 606/604 once HP /LP bypass is charged
D-2.2.12. Check the following turbine drains are opened as per SLC logic after the Unit Has tripped out .
D-2.2.13. The MS /HRH strainer drains MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106 are automatically closed once TG set Rolling started at
step 13 .
D-2.2.14. After Unit is synchronisation & Load pick up is > 100 MW ensure all the following drains are closed on auto
