Unit 2

Ratios and Proportions

Standards:
7.RP.A.1 - Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other
quantities measured in like or different units.

7.RP.A.2 - Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.

7.RP.A.3 -Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple
interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease,
percent error.

Big Ideas:
Proportional relationships exist in the real world all around you.
You can use proportional relationships to represent everyday rates of change.
You can solve real-world problems using proportional relationships and reasoning.

Essential Questions:
What characteristics can you use to generalize proportional relationships?
How can we use proportional reasoning to solve real-world problems?
What patterns can you identify and use to make conclusions that use proportional reasoning?

Prior Knowledge:

Unit Rates
Solving real-world problems with unit rates
Using ratios and rates to draw conclusions
Operations with fractions

Dividing and multiplying
Plotting points on a graph
Reading a coordinate graph

Common Misconceptions:

How to plot points and read a coordinate grid

How to arrange a Unit Rate (which amount is the numerator and which is the denominator)
Solving problems with complex fractions

Students will be able to apply percentages to solve real world problems on tax, discounts, sales, mark-ups,
interest and/or commission.

Formative Assessment Evidence:

Each day, I will design an exit slip to assess student mastery on the given objective for the day. Exit slips can
be paper questions, a question on plickers or even a series of questions on a platform like Kahoot.

There are also many ways that I can formatively assess without creating an exit slip. Having students show
thumbs up or thumbs down on a topic, giving a 3-2-1 rating with their hands or even just verbally talking to
their partners while I listen to their responses are manners in which I can assess whether students
understand.

Summative Assessment Evidence:

At the end of the unit, students will take a test that assesses all of the standards above. The test will include
multiple choice and higher-level writing prompts on objectives this unit.

Additionally, students will complete a project that allows them to show their mastery of proportional
relationships in a different manner than just completing the test. The project requires setting up proportions
and applying proportional reasoning to different aspects of their road trip.
