CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Nature and importance of field practice

Civil engineering field practice program is a period of work experience offered by a

chosen company that connects the gap between theory and practice and as well as between

classroom and real civil engineering industry life that presents a more precious learning

experience and improves the view of importance of the academic program. It also allows the

student to apply their learning from the academic institution in a work environment that

could develop their work values and attitudes to produce efficient and effective professionals

under different circumstances.

The training and experiences brought by the company to the students have contributed to

the development of the students attitudes to become true engineers and professional in the

real work environment even for a brief duration of period equivalent to 240 hours.

The objectives of internship are to create an opportunity to learn about the profession;

and to generate values as well as skills and techniques for as students in professional

undertakings. It is a part-time job for a duration of time, either modestly paid or unpaid, in

which the student gain knowledge while contributing to the organization. It provides the

student and understanding of the industry situation with supervision and support.
1.2 Objectives of the field practice

Generally, the field practice was conducted for the purpose of applying the engineering

theories acquired in the classroom and for exposure to actual processes and systems

employed in the fieldwork.

Specifically, the field practice aimed to:

1. To gain insights with actual engineering operation at Dahn Berger Philippines

Construction Corporation and to gain knowledge of the existing civil engineering

industry demands;

2. Expose to the various operations, processes, techniques and controls presently used in the

field of civil engineering; and

3. Develop management skills in different construction activities

1.3 Time and place of the field practice

The field practice was conducted at Dahn Berger Phils Construction Corporation located

at at 195 Quezon Road San Roque, Mexico, province of Pampanga.

The training commenced at 19th of June 2017 and ended 22nd of July 2017 after the

completion of the 240-hour requirement for the field practice.
