Generally speaking, 120k is not considered as high mileage for a diesel engine. That is if the motor has
been looked after, regular servicing & kept in good tune.

A diesel engine does not like high revs,
7.5 / 10k km oil changes.
Fuel injector & pump must be correctly set.

If these above conditions are adhered to, the engine should be good for half a million plus km.

Having driven an Isuzu diesel for the past 12 years, I would not acquire another petrol engined van. My
Isuzu had given it's fair share of engine troubles but they were mostly technician related. Rebuilding a
diesel engine is generally more costly than a petrol, due in part to the various bits being
meatier/stronger to handle the higher compression.

Diesel owners feel aggrieved at the high price of injector replacement but if you add up all the spark
plugs replaced in the injectors lifetime, the cost might even up.

Edit: Lastly, the torque in a diesel. Once you're used to the torque in a diesel engined vehicle & the low
revs, you get to think why the petrol version is revving so high & feeling underpowered. Yes a petrol
version gives a higher speed but how much speed do we really need in our trokkies?

Fit a Madman monitoring system to it and you should be a lot safer.

The diesel Colt is not the V6 colt, you will not have the same sound and performance feeling so test
drive it first.

Service and sensible driving as said above - VERY IMPORTANT.

Driving style will have to change from what you remember from the V6 Colt.

Injectors on the Colt is R1800 - R2400 depending on service provider (all 4), if you remove/install
yourself it is even cheaper, pump calibration is R2800 and up, pump recon is R4500 - R6500 depending
on what they replace.
Glow plugs I can't remember but think they around R450 each if you buy the mitsu speced ones.
Servicing:
Oil filter is R250 and oil is R240 x 2 (Delo 400, you need 7.5l)
Diesel filter is R250 and air filter is R200(on mine, there is a different version which is around R300).
The torque low down is nice and in low range 1st you can just about idle anywhere, you have a hand
throttle you can set if you need a bit more than idle.
Use the gearbox / torque correct and she can be acceptable quick.
Don't expect 160km/h or above (the speedo over reads plenty, use your GPS to check speed, so thos
saying they do 160 - 170, uhm no...).

Mine gives me 8.5km/l town and 9.5km/l highway @ 120, towing lightweight luggage trailer 9km/l @110,
towing heavy, well 8 or below but that is expected.
The rest is same as the V6
If you want a boy racer stay away you going to break it, then again many diesel golfs/polo's also break
because of driver abuse.

1) you need to change your driving style

2) you need to understand a little how a diesel delivers its power
3) As NeoT says, if you keep a TDi in the power band and let the turbodiesel do its stuff, they can be
very quick off the line and will even beat a V6 up to around 120kmH when the petrol's rev range takes
over

Apart from that, the service job is very easy:

oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, done. No plugs.

The 4M40 is a bloody good engine once the cylinder head is sorted.

the older truck types. The new stuff is much closer to petrol engines and some of them dont even
sound like diesels.
My eldest has a q7 and this thing sounds and pulls like a petrol.

Service is critical on these engines and if you look after them they will return the favour.

PS they can do the boy racer thing pretty well if you tweak them a bit.

Thanks all for the input, and thanks NeoT for the breakdown of service costs, thats very helpful

I do not expect the diesel to be the same as the petrol and I am very happy to adapt my driving style

Thanks Jelo,

Perhaps you could elaborate for me on the items I have marked in bold above?

1. Any suggestions on where/how I can learn about the power delivery on a diesel engine?

open in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API pdfcrowd.com
2. What are the issues with the head, and how does one sort them?

Much appreciated

new diesels are different. I towed over easter. Many climbs up passes foot flat in 5th gear for
kilometers at a time. No black smoke, no overheating, no blown engine or melted pistons.

And then I returned fuel economy whilst towing into a headwind that a petrol SUV would love to have
while NOT towing.

1) you need to understand a little how a diesel delivers its power :

A standard naturally aspirated diesel has a very linear power delivery that signs off abruptly once the
volumetric efficiency declines at the end of the injection limits:

open in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API pdfcrowd.com
You can see here that the torque is fairly uniform and flat.

By adding a turbo, the manufacturers can artificially manipulate the power delivery:

open in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API pdfcrowd.com
You can see the torque value climbs immediately as the turbo spins up but will then drop off as the
turbo efficiency and pump efficiency declines.

Here is a V6 power graph:

open in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API pdfcrowd.com
Observe the power delivery: much smoother and a much longer rev range as the petrol engine has less
of an abrupt power transition.

2. What are the issues with the head, and how does one sort them?

The factory head is known to crack. This is unfortunately due to bad casting at the plant. This causes
loss of coolant and/or combustion gasses in the coolant system, both which cause overheating.

AMC make an aftermarket head that is bullet-proof. Around R12k for a head with valves.

Ah ok, thanks for the graphs and this info. What do most people do? Wait until the head goes then
replace it, or replace it before it gives problems?

Dunno. Depends how much money you have. Most people wait until something breaks.
