Safe work procedure

Description of work: Operation of a CNC lathe

DO NOT use this machine unless you have been trained in its safe use and operation

Potential Hazards: Exposed moving parts and electrical hazard with the potential to cause harm through
entanglement, impact and cutting, exposure to projectiles and sharp objects.

Personal Protective Equipment: Eye protection, appropriate footwear, Protective clothing.

Pre operation:

Ensure task (e.g. Drawings, instructions, specifications etc.) is clearly understood, all
documents are received and inspection sheet matches inspection number on program.
Ensure operator wears appropriate PPE (e.g. hearing, eye, clothing and footwear
protection).
Ensure all guards are in place.
Check that the work piece is clamped securely in the chuck, with as minimum overhang
as possible.
Ensure correct computer controlled programmable is selected, via name and correct
revision number.
Identify ON/OFF switch and emergency stop button.
Make sure correct tools are used based on the program cycles.
Square threading and other tools using a dial gauge.
Check that all tool holders meet the requirements in terms of length and diameter to
run the program safely without any crashes or fouling of tools.
Make sure that the material or product being machined is dialled to within the ovality
tolerance given in the drawing if no tolerance is given our standard shall be within +/- .010.
Ensure that correct gauges are received and are within the calibration date on the
sticker.
Keep clear of moving machine parts.
Set correct speed and feed to suit diameter of material, depth of cut and type of
material.

Operation:

Set tools and work shift on material using a piece of paper or shim which is normal
practice.
Dry run program to ensure that there are no crashes or other problems like illegal
chamfering or illegal part shape design this can be done by standing off and physically running
the machine or using the tool path feature on some of the cnc machines.
Take test cuts if applicable to ensure that the cutting tool is correctly set and make
adjustments as necessary.
Produce test piece if applicable e.g. for Tenaris connections we are required to do as
such.
Run program and produce product as per specification of licensor or customer.
Machinist then final inspects product using the various inspection instruments and
guidelines on the inspection sheet.
Quality inspector will then inspect product to ensure it meets requirements of licensor
or customer as per our quality system.

Post operation:

Make sure that you use tools designed for removing cuttings and other materials. Do not use
your hands for removing cuttings as this is a serious safety violation.
Make sure that chucks and all moving parts are stopped before interacting with machined
product.
General safety practices must be followed and report all injuries or non-conformances to your
supervisor.
