AN ORGANIC INTERIOR OF A DENTAL CLINIC FOR

DR.ASHTEKAR-Ar. Pramod Chaugule.

Text-Ar Suvarna Lele

The best Architecture comes from a synthesis of all elements that separately
comprise a space like the structure , the services , the ecology , the materials used,
their mass, the character of spaces and the relationship of the forms.
To understand a space and to reflect its characteristics in the design is the main
duty of an accomplished architect, not to forget Client’s requirements.
A truly organic creation and a satisfied client is a rare combination.
Many of the practicing Architects of present generation are getting awareness
regarding this, which is reflected in their design. The interior design of a dental clinic
for Dr Ashtekar by Architect Pramod Chaugule,is one of the examples of such a
creative awareness.
The feel of ethnicity is maintained through the use of appropriate materials.
Blending of the perfectly selected materials, colours and lighting, give the area an
authentic look of a modern clinic with rustic touch.
The entrance passage is simple and inviting with three colourful murals attached to
a pale yellow coloured wall with black and bold nameplate having white lettering.
Diffused lighting attracts your attention. A rectangular white striped planter box is
placed at the corner.

ENTRANCE
RECEPTION ROOM

At the entrance is a reception room which is furnished with white luxurious leather
sofas for comfortable sitting. A PVC carpet is laid on the floor which is subtly
coloured.
The exposed areas show rustic ceramic tiles giving an earthy look to the
surrounding
room. This rustic effect is enhanced by curtains which are made up of jute and
hence very cheap and easy for maintainace. The eye catching feature of these areas is
a glass box with steel tubes which is the focal point of the room serving the purpose
of a photo gallery for the display of doctor’s work.
RECEPTION ROOM

The reception room looks serene with application of all mild colour shades with
flash of glowing rust orange to a singular wall and a beam creating a dramatic
effect. The counter is pitch black in colour with colourful murals set inside the
counter. The counter top is suspended glass with steel tubes as the supports at the
ends only. The simple, basic, rectangular form has given a graceful look to this piece
of furniture. The splashes of green and brown are seen around the room in form of
indoor plants in their brown containers. The jute curtains, the stone pebbles and the
planters give an earthy touch to an otherwise modern setup.

If you take a look at the plan, the activities are arranged in simple fashion to
facilitate the easy movements of people through the rooms.Minimum furniture is
used with the maximum utility. The rooms are perfect rectangles in shape with
simpler square and rectangular shaped furniture pieces.
The waiting room is conveniently placed adjacent to consulting as well as operation
room which overlooks the consulting room through a fully glass partition.
The operation theater has been provided with associated activity rooms such as
sterile room, changing room and a small laboratory. An internal passage also leads
to areas as toilet, pantry and a spacious and airy rest room which is used as doctor’s
rest room or VIPs waiting
DOCTORS ROOM

A black framed glass door leads to internal consulting area which is treated in white
and cream colours. The space is open, properly lighted with only minimal and
required furniture pieces as a rectangular cabinet, MD's table and a sofa as an extra
sitting space. Two murals are painted on canvas in watercolors which give a striking
effect to a simple space. The openness of every room is reflected in appropriate
choice of furniture their non cluttering and exact colour schemes selected for every
room. Very modern leather sofa and chairs add to the attractiveness of space. A
very special feature of this room is ,one of the walls is treated by creating niches.
These niches are illuminated and decorated by placing sculptures and murals inside
OPERATION THEATER
OPERATION THEATER

A full glass is provided between the consulting and operation theater where a doctor
can watch the activities going on in an operation theater.
A clean look is given to OT by application of white and blue colours which suit the
related activity.
Room is also furnished with a striking blue carpet while the walls are treated with
super white colour giving the space a modern look which is in relation with the
advanced equipments .The equipments also have a white colour. Two murals ,
painted on canvas in blue and yellow shades are attached to the ceiling which match
with the colour scheme. Side wall is painted with beautiful free flowing forms
painted in various shades of blue which form a stark contrast with plain floor and
ceiling.
WAITING ROOM

Every care is taken for the comfort of the doctor and the patients visiting this clinic.
A small waiting room is created giving it an earthy and rustic effect by application
of rustic orange colour for a beam running above and the ceramic rough textured
brownish tiles all over the floor of this room. The sofa’s provided are grey colored
which are the only furniture pieces in this room giving the room an open and airy
effect.
Green splashes are seen in this room also in the form of plants.
OTHER ROOMS

The smaller rooms are also taken care of by giving them the proper colour shades,
mostly pastels or white. The chosen colours give them a an airy and open feel while
taking care of the requirements and the activities performed there.
Talking about the lighting, the lighting is done as per the illumination requirement
of every room which is diffused at some places and focused at other. The fixtures
used are very modern and attractive but simple in form.Lighting is thought about
for very inch of the rooms.
The germ of an interesting design does not lie in creating a flashy or eye catching
effect without a purpose but creating a meaningful and lively space by
understanding the space, its requirements and last but not least the clients
requirements, as the design can’t be created in isolation.
Thus a successful blend of all the requirements and ideas creating a satisfactory
result for the end user is reflected in Dr.Astekars Dental clinic by architect Pramod
which is an example of a very modern design created in a comparatively vernacular
background and creating a design with regards to the surrounding.
