Cell Theory
Cell Theory
1. All living things are made of cells.
2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things.
3. New cells are produced from existing cells.

Matthias Schleiden
Theodor Schwann
Rudolf Virchow

Said that all cells come from other cells
Dr. Rudolf Virchow

Structures in the Cell

Organelles: The small specialized structures that carry out functions within a cell.
Nucleus: The control center of the cell. It contains nearly all of the cells DNA.
Ribosomes: Creates protein within the cell.
Vacuole: Stores food, water, and wastes.
Mitochondria: The PowerHouse of the cell because it produces energy for the cell. Cellular respiration
occurs in the mitochondria.
Cytoplasm: Thick, gel-like material inside the cell that holds and supports cell organelles.
Endoplasmic Reticulum: A series of membrane channels that modifies and transports proteins.
Lysosomes: Responsible for destroying old organelles that can no longer carry out their function.
Golgi Apparatus (Body): Modify, sort, and package the proteins that have arrived from the Endoplasmic
reticulum. These proteins will be either stored inside the cell or be hidden to the outside of the cell.
Cell Membrane: Maintains the shape of the cell, and regulate the passage of materials into and out of the cell.
Chloroplasts*: This is where photosynthesis takes place.
Cell Wall*: This structure surrounds and supports plant cells but is absent in animal cells.

Be able to identify the different organelles of the different cells.

Animal Cell Plant Cell

Plants cell differ from animal cells because

Plant cells have a LARGE central vacuole
Plant cells have chloroplast
Plant cells have a cell wall
