Bacterial Meningitis
165 newborns die of Bacterial Meningitis (BM) every day leaving significant sequelae
among survivors. BM is life-threatening with sometimes fever as the only sign. Rapid
identification is essential because prognosis worsens with delayed treatment. Lumbar
Puncture (LP) to draw a sample of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is the only method
currently available to determine if BM is present in infants (<1yr). If CSF cellularity is
increased, medication is immediately administered until bacteriologic results are
available after 48h. However, 95% of LPs for suspected BM in infants return negative,
costing the EU 650M/yr. In under-resourced countries, the lack of laboratory
facilities increases misdiagnosis with 50% neonates with BM dying of the disease. Lumbar puncture
