Notes for Philip Sherman:

From the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 1870, Vol 24, page 65-66:

In the Anne Hutchinson troubles, in Boston, he took the popular side; but as Gov. Winthrop
ultimately prevailed, he with others found it convenient to immigrate to Rhode Island. In
Providence, they met Roger Williams, who advised them to purchase the island of Aquetnet (now
Rhode Island) of the Indians. The purchase was completed March 24, 1638. On the first day of
July, 1639, they established a regular government, of which Coddington was chosen governor and
Philip Sherman secretary. after this he often held office in the colony, and, in critical periods, as a
man of intelligence, wealth and influence, was frequently consulted by those in authority.

My sisters and I went to the California University of Pennsylvania's library on

Saturday to do your lookup on Samuel McDaid's death. We did not find an "obit" as
such but we did find this entry in the Daily Reporter (believe this was the old
Washington Observer) on Monday, December 24, 1889:

"S. S. McDaid, who carries the mail daily between West Finley and West
Alexander, died very suddenly on Saturday evening. Mr. McDaid had finished his
day's work and while entering the house fell dead in the doorway. Heart disease is
supposed to have caused his death. He had been carrying the mail for about six
months."

We searched the Daily Reporter for several days afterwards and in the December
27, 1889 edition found another note as follows: "Geo. W. McDaid has been
appointed postmaster at West Finley." This was Samuel's younger brother and we
wonder if he took over Samuel's position at the Post Office. We have also learned

W.H. Potter Fatally Injured By a Train

William H. Potter, Civil War veteran, was fatally injured at the B. & O. station about
7:40 a.m. Thursday, by being struck by a double header west bound freight train.
He was coming from his home up the Burnsville road over to town and from the foot
of Bell avenue cut up across the play grounds to the depot, where a semi public
crossing is used by those coming that way.

Apparently his mind was centered upon other matters and he failed to notice the
train approaching. Others saw his danger and tried to warn him, but without avail.
He was almost over the track when struck and was thrown aside several feet. His
right was broken, chest crushed and a hole was cut in his side. H.R. Blayney. H.K.
Bell and others ran to his aid. Drs. J.N. Sprowls, and C.C. Cracraft. B. & O.
physicians, were summoned. The injuries were found to be fatal and he died about
one and a half hours later.

Mr. Potter was about 75 years of age, and a native of West Finley township.

Much of his life was spent at Good Intent. He was married to Miss Sarah Wolfe,
sister of C.C. Wolfe, of this place. He served in Company K, Sixteenth
Pennsylvania Cavalry, and proved a good soldier for the _____ cause. He followed
farming. For many years he was a member of Windy Gap Presbyterian church. To
his close friends he was known as "Bill" Potter and to all he was of that jovial
disposition which wins warm friendships. He was a member of Patterson Jobes
Post No 535, G.A.R., and one of its most active members. His death takes away
another of the rapidly thinning roll.

Mr. Potter's death is deplored by many. His family is one of the prominent, and
best known of the community. He came to Claysville about three years ago, and
had spent the winter in Wheeling, having only returned about two weeks since. He
leaves his wife, one daughter and three sons,?? Mrs. Jennie Burt, of Swissdale,
Pa.; Oscar Potter, of West Alexander; Allen Potter, of Troupe, Texas, (where the
deceased spent several months last year), and Chris Potter, in Louisiana. Also by
three sisters and three brothers??Mrs. J.B. Ackley, West Finley; Mrs. T.A. Stout,
and Mrs. H.P. Danley, Claysville; Pet Potter, of Washington, Jennie Potter, of
Dubesque, Col., and John Potter, in Illinois.

taken to Wheeling on the three o'clock train for interment.
v. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WOLFE was born on 05 November 1844 in near Ninevah,
Greene County, Pennsylvania, USA. He died on 20 October 1920 in Claysville,
Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA (Pernicious Anemia). He married Mary S
Sprowls, daughter of Alexander Sprowls and Jane Montgomery, on 21 March 1867
in Windy Gap Presbyterian Parsonage, West Finley, Washington, Pennsylvania,
USA. She was born on 21 September 1848 in West Finley Twp, Washington
County, Pennsylvania, USA. She died on 11 October 1935 in Claysville,
Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA (Angina pectoris with arterio sclerosis
contributing).

Notes for Christopher Columbus Wolfe:

Christopher Wolfe and his wife have a large stone at Claysville Cemetery which lists
the names of their children and the years of their birth and death. There are
separate stones for Alexander Reed Wolfe, his wife, son and daughter, but I am
unsure as to whether the other children are buried there with their parents.

CITIZEN HAS PASSED AWAY

C. C. Wolfe Was Long Active In Affairs of West Finley Township

FUNERAL SERVICES SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Christopher C. Wolfe, a well-known citizen of Claysville, where he had resided for

more than a score of years past, died at his home in Elm street Wednesday evening
at 9 o'clock, after an illness lasting for more than a year. His wife and the following
children survive: Ida, wife of Frank Smith, of Cadiz, 0.; Haley, wife of Charles Tripp,
of Nineveh, Greene county; Carrie, wife of Carson Blayney, of West Finley
township; Annie and Hazel, at home. A son, Reed Wolfe, died a little more than a
year ago. The funeral services will beheld at the Wolfe home on Saturday
afternoon at 1: 30 o'clock, and the Interment will be made In the Claysville
cemetery.

A son of Luther Wolfe, Christopher C. Wolfe was born on the old Wolfe farm in
Morris township, Greene county, now owned by C. H. Andrew, on November 5,
1844. In the spring of the year 1848 Luther Wolfe and family moved to a farm
adjoining the village of Nineveh, in the same township.

Three years later, in the year 1851, another move was made, this time to a tract of
timber land a short distance northwest of the town of Burnsville, West Finley
township.

Prior to moving his family to that point, Luther Wolfe, the father, went in advance
and constructed a dwelling of hewed logs, the only kind of dwellings erected at that
time. There was no cleared land near and Mr. Wolfe, then in the prime of life, went
to work with a will and determination and cleared off ground for growing grain and
garden truck, and in later years cleared more land until he had a large tract of
productive territory.

When the war with the South broke out, young Christopher, then but 18 years of
age, volunteered to go to the front as a soldier, but his presence at home was so

age, volunteered to go to the front as a soldier, but his presence at home was so
badly needed that he was not allowed to carry out his intentions. After attaining his
majority, he again volunteered and was accepted in Company K of the of Sixteenth
Penna Cavalry regiment.

Serving till the close of the war, Mr. Wolfe and many other comrades were held to
preserve law and order in Virginia for a time under command of Captain J. Rayner
Day. In August of that year he was discharged at Harrisburg.

On March 21, 1867, Mr. Wolfe and Miss Mary Sprowls, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alexander Sprowls of West Finley township, were married and began housekeeping
on the farm which Mr. Wolfe's father had purchased, where they resided
continuously until about the year 1897, when the family removed to Claysville,
where the family continues to live.

During the many years in which Mr. Wolfe resided In West Finley township he was
foremost in all matters pertaining to the general uplift and betterment of the people.
He was always a fearless advocate of right principles, being identified in all
movements made to suppress the evils of intemperance, and always, lent a willing
hand to the causes of religion and education. When a small boy he became a
member of the Windy Gap Cumberland Presbyterian church, retaining his
membership there for a considerable time after removing to Claysville, when he
transferred to the Presbyterian church at that place.

While living in West Finley township he served in various offices in the church,
being a member of the building committee having in charge the erection of the
present church edifice; built In the year 1887. He was an active Sunday school
worker, having been in charge of the men's class at the church at Claysville for
several years past.

While his vocation in life was that of a farmer, Mr. Wolfe managed to give
considerable time to leasing oil and gas territory in various sections of both
Washington and Greene counties. He also dealt considerably in coal In this county.

In politics Mr. Wolfe was a Republican of the progressive type, choosing, however,
to ignore party politics when principle was involved. His influence was ever for
temperance in all matters, political or otherwise.
