ISB Hyderabad launches young leaders' programme

The Indian School of Business launched Young Leaders Programme targeting undergraduates. As part of the programme, the B-school will mentor fresh graduates for two years in their work after the college. It will also pay a scholarship of Rs 100,000 to students selected for this programme. Students, after the two-year mentorship, can come back to ISB to pursue the regular postgraduate programme (MBA) for which candidates with work experience alone are eligible. For getting selected to this programme, students should clear GMAT and the same will be valid after two years for admission into the PGP module. According to ISB senior director V K Menon, the selection process will begin a year before students complete their graduation. The selection of students for the YLP will be rigorous and will last for six months or so, he said, adding they would be needed to make a video presentation, write an essay and go for an evaluation by the ISB. In the second stage, students should clear GMAT and present three essays. This will be followed by on-campus selection at ISB. Speaking to the media, ISB deputy director Deepak Chandra said ISB would not charge anything for the YLP programme. This would be open to all graduates across disciplines. This will also be open to international students. ISB will take about 50 students in the first year. Students will have to find a job for themselves and ISB will mentor them for two years on the personal front. The training will have no relation to the job on hand, he said. ISB now has a class strength of 570 for its PGP programme and is hopeful of getting 10 per cent of the strength from the YLP module. Candidates selected into the YLP are required to complete one year and nine months of work experience before joining the ISBs PGP. During this period, students will attend contact programmes at the ISB campus at the end of every six months. The contact sessions at the ISB will focus on enhancing their leadership quotient, expose them to diverse career options, network and build relationships with likeminded YLP peers and ISB alumni, share experiences and gain valuable lessons from them. YLP participants will be eligible for a scholarship of Rs one lakh. In addition, they will be eligible for both merit and need based scholarships of the PGP. The YLP participants will comprise about 10% of the PGP class size every year.

Structure of the GMAT GMAT

What is a Computer-Adaptive Test? In a computer-adaptive test the computer screen displays one question at a time which is chosen from a very large pool of questions categorized by content and the level of difficulty. The first question is always of a medium difficulty and each subsequent question is determined by your responses to all the previous questions. In other words the CAT adjusts itself to your ability level - you will get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you. The GMAT split into three sections (4 Hours Test) Scale of Score Questions Topic Timing NA 30 min.

Remember: The Analytical Writing section is always the first section followed by the Quantitative Section and then the Verbal Section. GMAT Score: The GMAT score is for a total of 800. The score is based on a combination of the Quantitative and Verbal sections and will be in a range of 200-800. The Verbal and Quantitative scaled scores range from 0 to 60. Scores below 9 and above 44 for the Verbal section or below 7 and above 50 for the Quantitative section are rare. Both scores are on a fixed scale and can be compared across all GMAT test administrations. Please note that, if you do not finish in the allotted time, you will still receive scores as long as you have worked on every section. However, your scores will be calculated based upon the number of questions answered, and your score will decrease significantly with each unanswered question. (Source: gmac.org)

Where do I start from? You are suppose to know where you stand before you start. Brush up some Math basics and then give full length GMAT prep from official material. You can use strategies, questions and grammar rules published by Achievers Point. I went through some S.C theory books, but I am not able to implement what I read. While books on S.C give grammar rules in a systematic manner, with various definitions and algorithms that exist, they cannot make you observe errors on questions. You are suppose to practice questions and learn to see rules in questions. When is the GMAT Test held? How many times can a person take GMAT to get into good B school? The GMAT can be taken unlimited times, and a maximum of 5 times in a year, with a minimum of a months' gap between two attempts. It is healthy to get a good score in the first attempt. Do not look forward to give GMAT multiple times. What do I do to improve my Math basics? A 9th and 10th standard math book will help. However, this will only keep you refreshed about basic concepts, formula's, and may be conventional ways of solving tricky questions. The GMAT math is a test of verbal skills also, so get used to the English it uses on its math questions. Do I brush up some grammar rules before I start Verbal? No. The GMAT verbal, in a manner, is a discipline in itself. You may need to know the parts of speech in English, and then begin learning from GMAT specific books. I prepared for the CAT about a year or more ago, can I use those books or strategies for GMAT? No. The GMAT is completely different from other tests. While logic is universal, the nature and style of questions are unique to GMAT.
All-round-the-year. Unlike other exams, you can choose your own date and time for taking the GMAT! The test is administered five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day. September to December is the high season for GMAT, so in case you intend to take the test during this period, you need to register very early (say 90 days in advance) to get a date of your choice. Otherwise, registering at least 15 days in advance is mandatory. The test lasts roughly four hours, and most centres offer two slots : 9 A.M. and 2 P.M.

Is better to have a 770 score rather than a 690? A score that your profile demands is the best for you. Absolute comparison of two persons with different scores is not correct. I got 600 on GMAT prep, 710 on another software test, and 630 on another, where would my actual GMAT score stand? No test other than the GMAT prep can be a close reflection of your level. Moreover, your performance on the Dday is what decides your score and not what your mock scores were. You can still take other preps just to get questions and a timer as an add-on. How many preps am I suppose to take? The more preps you take, the better. After every prep, go through all questions and solve all incorrect questions again. Take AWA, Math and Verbal at a stretch. Two preps per week is ideal. What is the GMAT verbal ? Is it a language test? No. The GMAT verbal is not a language test only. Remember Sentence Correction is a test of grammar and observations skills, Critical Reasoning is a test of logical reasoning and Reading Comprehension - a test of 'eye for detail', comprehension and reasoning skills. In a nut shell - the GMAT is a test of ones "self - management skills" - time, intellect, reasoning and confidence. Practice well, and you will ace the GMAT.

One - Year MBA Options

For Indian Applicants: The one-year MBA programs in India are relatively new. They are meant for applicants with work experience who are looking to upgrade their management skills and fast track their career progress. ISB started it, and now IIM Ahmadabad and IIM Calcutta have also started one-year MBA programs. S.P.Jain also offers a one-year program but only for those interested to specialize in manufacturing and operations or information management. The cost of these MBA programs for working executives is much higher than those of the regular two-year programs in India: Rs. 6 lacs at S.P.Jain, Rs. 10 lacs at IIM Ahmadabad, Rs.8 lacs at IIM Calcutta and Rs. 15 lacs at ISB. These are approximate costs at these schools including living expenses. Loans from banks to finance all or part of the expenses are easily available to selected applicants. There are more options available if you plan on going abroad for your one-year MBA. If you seek an international study experience and employment abroad on completion of the program, these programs provide good opportunities: INSEAD, IMD Switzerland, Said School of Business (Oxford University) and Judge Business School (University of Cambridge) in Europe. Kellogg and Emory University are the good options in the US for a 1-year MBA. Costs including living expenses can be much higher in Europe and US. Euro 60,000 (Rs. 32 lacs) at INSEAD, Swiss Francs 110,000 (Rs. 37 lacs) at IMD Switzerland, UK Pounds 38,000 (Rs. 29 lacs) at Oxford. Among the US oneyear programs, Kellogg could cost about $80,000 (Rs. 36 lacs) and Emory MBA about $70,000 (Rs.32 lacs). These are all approximate figures, based on previous year estimates. Please check directly with the schools for more precise budgets. In addition to the higher expenses, MBA programs abroad can be more competitive too. You compete globally for fewer of seats that may be allocated for applicants from India. There is no strict number that schools allot to applicants from each country but they don't take too many from each country to ensure diversity in the class. The ISB (Indian School of Business) evolved from the need for a world class business school in Asia. Its Founders- some of the best minds from the corporate and academic worlds- visualised the leadership needs of emerging Asian economies. The ISB is committed to its role in creating such leaders through its innovative Programmes, outstanding faculty and thought leadership. The Indian School of Business (ISB) located in Hyderabad, India, is an international business school providing postgraduate programmes in Management (Master of Business Administration - MBA), post doctoral programmes, as well as executive education programmes for business executives. Indian School of Business's partners include Kellogg School of Management, Wharton Business School and London Business School. Here is your chance to get an authentic answer for ISB Hyderabad directly from horse mouth. Ch. Hima Bindu, Assistant Director - Admissions and Financial Aid, ISB Hyderabad will answer. Ch. Hima Bindu answers all your questions about admissions, scholarships, placements, faculty, infrastructure, culture and student life. Ch. Hima Bindu's User ID is Admission@ISB. We have excerpts of few questions here. We have official chat session at http://www.takegmat.com/answer/ Two days before I wrote GMAT and scored 620 (V/27, Q/48). I have two years and two months of work experience in IT industry. I am also involved in activities like social and community services, Blogging, Yoga. All i want to know whether it is a good move to apply to ISB with such a score. Any help is deeply appreciated. Admission@ISB: GMAT is one of the criterions. A good GMAT improves your chances but will not guarantee a seat. A good application matters essentially. I wanted to apply for ISB 2010 batch. I am planning to take my GMAT in mid-September 2009. I heard many of them saying that people applying for cycle 1 will be given more preference than those applying for cycle2. As i am planning to take GMAT in September, I can apply for cycle 2 only and i am anxious to know the priorities given for people applying to cycle 1 and 2. Regards, TARGETISB Admission@ISB: The intake is 50-50 for cycle 1 and cycle 2. After completing my B.Com (H) from Delhi University, I have done my 3 years of full time internship. My final result for CA is awaited and is expected to be out by the end of July'09. I just want to know whether i am eligible to apply for ISB i.e. will my internship be considered as work experience. -Thank you, Varun Chadha Admission@ISB: Yes, Internship is considered as work exp for CAs if the same is after graduation which is in your case. Hi, I am a software engineer with 2 year experience in software field (with mechanical degree from NIT). My future goal is to pursue an MBA from a reputed institute like ISB, Hyderabad. Currently I have two offers in hand for job with following job profile 1. B2B and supply chain management software, a $500+ million revenue company 2. Hyperworks, software development for automobile industry, a $150 million company. Admission@ISB: Out of the above two which one will be a suitable profile for an MBA 1+ year down the line? This is Kiran. I play hockey and have an aggregate of 55% in my graduation with 5+ years experience which includes IT and 6 sigma quality experience. I know my graduation % stands at the lower side, what should I do so that I could stand a chance to get into ISB? Admission@ISB: You can compensate for your average marks with a very good GMAT score.

Hi, I have done my MCA from Osmania University Campus .I was the only student to be selected by Leading internet major Company from whole University worked for 6 months there as intern for full time, but i opted to select other company (Leading database Provider) since it was in my home town i.e. Hyderabad .I have been in Oracle since past 14 months. Can you please let me know whether i am eligible for applying to ISB 2009 batch? Admission@ISB: To apply to ISB you need to have minimum two years of work experience. If your internship was part of your MCA course then it will not be considered as work exp. I have just taken my GMAT and got a score of 650. I have a total of 3.5 years (current) of work experience out of which 1.5 yrs was in the US for an IT solutions company. For the last 2 yrs I have been working for a leading MNC in India. I have a BS in Computer Engineering from Drexel University in the US. With my current profile, and the 650 GMAT score (6 on AWA), and a good work on the application along with the essays, what are my chances for admission. Or is 650 too low a score that I should think of taking the GMAT again and apply in the second round. Your response would be much appreciated. Admission@ISB: You belong to the IT applicant pool from where we receive the highest number of applications, thus making the process very competitive. The average GMAT score for the IT applicant pool in the current batch is 730. I will suggest that you retake the GMAT test to add strength to your application. I, Rishi Talwar, am a merchant navy officer working as a second officer. i will be appearing for GMAT in sep 2008, but would like to apply for ISB for 2010-2011 batch, would my GMAT score (being 1 year old ) have any negative impact on my selection. Since i am in a profession where i cannot work and study at the same time, I decided to utilize my leave this year for GMAT. Kindly advice. Admission@ISB: Rishi, Your GMAT score is valid for next 5 years. You can definitely apply to ISB next year with your 2008 GMAT score.

Students comments: Well, in reallity, I did not answer all the questions correctly. My final score (which I received today)

has been 720 (Q-50, V-37, AWA -5.5) and I am not complaining. Pulling the verbal score from 27 to 37 requires something special and I want to give Achievers Point the complete credit for injecting that 'special ....' in me. me I don't know what future God has kept for me, however I keep thanking god to gift me the wonderful experience named AchieversPoint. Take www.achieverspoint.com Care and God bless you all!!!- Anjan Ghosh, GMAT, 720
