From the Desk of President
Agricultural Engineering Society has been organizing events for better interaction
amongst the students of the department. Last year, we conducted our department
fest “Prakriti” and received a warm appreciation by all. It was a great effort by our
students, and with the support of you all we hope to make it bigger and better this
year. We are planning to take up a few more initiatives for further involvement of
the students in our activities. We would take a step to introduce students with
different opportunities to brighten their careers. I hope that you follow the tradition
that our alumni have made for us. I wish you all a very happy journey ahead!

From the Desk of Literary Secretary
The Agriculture Engineering Society (AES) is the official student body of the
Department. It serves as a platform for the students of the Department to take up
new initiatives in academic and extra-academic spheres under the reliable guidance
of our respected and experienced Professors, and as students, to do their bit in
eradicating the loopholes prevalent in the system. It also promotes intra-department
interaction amongst students from all years who are greatly benefited from the
“funda” they acquire hence. Last year, the society organised Prakriti 2010 (an Agri
and Food Innovation Camp). It was a prodigious initiative by the members of the
society to establish relations and build up contacts with the enterprises in this
domain. We hope to make it bigger this time and would be glad to have your full
support and cooperation.
Finally, I extend my best wishes to all the freshers as they enter into the ‘KGPian way
of life’ as a ‘ghasi’. I hope that the next few years play a vital role in creating fond
memories that you shall cherish all your lives!

Prakriti’10
It is believed that education and fun are two different things. Attempt was made to
break this myth by conducting various competitions for the students, including ad-
design, case study, poster presentation, quiz and treasure hunt. Aquaculture
Workshop conducted by Prof. B. C. Mal (Ex-Faculty, IIT Kharagpur) introduced the
students to one of the areas of agricultural and food engineering which is usually not
included in their undergraduate syllabus. The two major events of Prakriti 2010 were
Symposium and Agribusiness workshop, both of which gave students an opportunity
to interact with the industry professionals and academicians.
Symposium
14
Mr.Varun Kumar (alumnus IIT Kgp), Ms.R. Thakker- (Elmac Food Pvt Ltd), Mr and Mrs
Mukherjee (from Soma Food Pvt ltd). The Academy was represented by Prof.R Singh
(Head of the department, Agriculture and Food Engineering), Prof. H. N Mishra, Prof.
H. Das, Prof. T. K. Goswami, Prof. P. S. Rao (faculties, Dept. of Agricultural and Food
Engineering).
The panel discussed on the range of topics, the focus being to bridge the gap
between Industrial products and Institutional research. Some of the important
outcomes from the Industrial side were- a need for indigenous machines, fast-paced
research for short-term problems, development of existing technologies and
provision of turnkey solutions.
Inputs from the academic side were – to introduce internship programs in industries
which could become a platform for interaction, to be result specific in sponsored
researches, to come up with a successful blend of knowledge of product, equipment
and market and two way approaches.
Agribusiness Workshop
The aim of the workshop was to open up horizons for the enthusiastic future
entrepreneurs about the subtlety of the industry. The event focused on building a
platform where these budding entrepreneurs were able to interact with some of the
officials and professionals from industries and academia. The prominent speakers
15
were Ms. Aditi Gupta (Senior Associate, CIIE, IIM Ahmedabad), Prof. K. K. Guin
(Faculty, VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur) and Mr. Manas Bhattacharjee (Project Manager,
AFCL, Kolkata). Ms. Aditi Gupta explained the role of incubation centres in
technology-driven start-ups and the importance of choosing the right financing
organization at the right stage of their startups. Mr. Manas Bhattacharjee unveiled
various financing opportunities for agri-business available today and explained about
the help government agencies like AFCL can offer to them. He focused on the
importance of agri-business in a developing country like India.
Prof. K. K. Guin, who is also associated with the Entrepreneurship Cell, and Science
and Technology Entrepreneurship Park of IIT Kharagpur , spoke about the various
aspects of entrepreneurship. He expressed his view of entrepreneurship at the grass
root level, its impact on the
society and the role of
corporate in encouraging
agri-business.
The students have shown tremendous enthusiasm and energy, which made this
event a successful one despite all the challenges faced. Not only did they learn about
the opportunities, the professionals from various industries were also impressed by
their initiative and were willing to help them in future initiatives.
It was a moment of pride for the students when Mr. Sanjai Naphade
appreciated their team effort. In his own words “With all this, my respect toward IIT
Kharagpur was really doubled.”

MESSAGE FROM A THIRD YEAR
Welcome freshers....!!!!
As we all know that “Rank is not merely an index of one’s intelligence, it also
indicates the hard work and perseverance that students put in to reach their goal”.
We salute you for your hard work to get into IIT Kharagpur and now this is our
privilege (this would not be the wrong word because you are the future of our India
and also our Department ) that we get a chance to welcome you whole-heartedly.
Perhaps many of you have a wrong perception about this department but believe us
guys, all of you would realize, if not now, after coming to this department in the
second year that the part of life you will spend in this department, would be the best
part of your life and you would also feel proud to be a “Ghaasi”.
Always remember one thing in life that “excellence should not be a one-time
achievement, it should be a habit”. If you will follow these scintillating lines then
believe us guys you shall definitely achieve the great summit of success.

FALLING LEAVES
Ever felt a stray thought?
I have lived my life: I loved it... I will live my death: I will love it too

EXPECTATIONS
So many expectations on so many people. Expectations are nothing but the
opportunities we give others either to make us happy or to disappoint us. However,
ever wondered why we give so much authority to others that our happiness or
sadness depends on them! Attitude matters here. Our attitude decides the influence
of other people in our lives. It is said that in life 10% is what happens to us and 90% is
how we react to it.
I do not want include family in the other group of people because success or failure,
angry or sad they are always by our side, at least till the day we move and live
independently. However this is not the case when it comes to the new relation we
make here out in this planet. We expect from others and in turn make them expect
something back from us. In addition, this goes on like a circle with no end .Major
reason for ruining our peaceful and happy moments. Everyone is good to you expect
nothing from them and you are good to them only until you fulfil their expectations.
Why should we expect things from others? We are in charge of our own life, we will
decide if we want to be happy or sad, angry or calm, moody or stable. Why should
we entirely depend on others to get our things done? We aren’t physically or
mentally crippled, neither is the other person any heavenly body. Taking help is ok,
but completely depending on them is preplanning to get disappointed.
Expectations from exams, situations, occasions leave the same impact. When the
future isn’t under anyone’s control, then its foolishness to build our expectations
regarding that. When we can’t guarantee what we are going to accomplish the very
next day, how we can we a guarantee what others are going to do? That too not for
themselves but for us!
I do not say that we should never ever have any expectations from others, because
that is next to impossible. But we can limit them for the least number possible. A big
favour we will do for ourselves. Having self expectations is also very tricky. Expecting
things beyond our limits can push us into valley of depressions if we fail at it.
Expectations are like double-edged knives so not only while dealing with others, we
have to be careful even when dealing with self.
So finally the least expectations you keep on people and this life the happier you will
be.
-K. Santhosh
