the spotlight shines on efficiency
Thermal management is a key factor that limits the lumen output and efficiency of an LED lightsource. While as much as 80
percent more energy efficient than traditional incandescent lighting, the LED components still create a considerable amount
of heat. If this heat is not dissipated properly, the quality of light and life expectancy of the LED lightsource decreases
dramatically.
In order to reach the desired lumen values in a small form factor, active cooling may be required to effectively dissipate the
heat produced by the LED components. Active cooling technology offers thermal capabilities that are superior to passive
heat sinks and can raise performance while reducing the size of the lighting fixture. With inaudible noise performance and

A quick drop in the outside temperature
can create a vacuum of 0.5 psi or greater
inside the enclosure. When a vacuum occurs,
water and contaminants can enter the hous-
ing. In mild cases, corrosion is accelerated,
and in severe cases, catastrophic failure could
occur. The corrosion can shorten the life of
the luminaire by damaging wiring, leads, and
other electronics contained within the lumi-
naire and the LEDs.
Fig. 1 shows how temperature can fluctu-
ate inside and outside the luminaire mapped
relative to power on and off cycles for the
luminaire. Temperature rises inside the
luminaire when it is powered on. As a lumi-
naire turns on and off , the changes in the
temperatures result in sudden pressure dif-
ferentials (Fig. 2). The housing tries to relieve
the pressure by drawing air inside, which
increases stress on the seals (a process some-
times referred to as pressure equalization).
Altitude changes are another common FIG. 5. Condensation inside an LED luminaire limits performance.

LEDs | ROUND SOURCES
L
EDs are becoming increasingly popular
in lighting applications due to energy
efficiency and long life, but the indus-
try is still learning how to deliver optimum
system performance in solid-state light-
ing (SSL) products. The shape of traditional
LEDs poses one challenge. While many
LEDs appear round because of the primary
optic installed over the emitter, the actual
source has typically been rectangular or
square. Round sources, however, can provide
increased efficacy, better uniformity, and FIG. 1. Luminus Devices family of round

projectors of various sizes. It is worth noting
that these systems exploit the very same geo-
metric concept as the new round LEDs they
match the shape of the source to that of the
system aperture. Luminus 16:9 and 4:3 aspect
ratio LEDs enable the highest efficiency in
projectors with those respective aspect ratios.
Typical optical systems or applications for
round LEDs are similarly tendue limited.
The first requirement for such applications
is to generate as much light as possible from
the smallest emitting area. A projection sys-
tem, for example, will have an aperture stop
implemented as an optical plane within the
system with a given aperture size and accep-
tance angle thereby determining the limiting
tendue of the system. If the source tendue
exceeds that of the aperture stop, the excess
light will be lost as no intermediate optical
system can squeeze the source down to match
the stops tendue.
Therefore, optimizing system efficiency FIG. 3. A hard-edge spot LED entertainment lighting fi xture the Philips Selecon PL-

the devices may also be used to source/sink

A key to the usage of backlighting drivers
is the ability to program the current through
any channel. In the case of the AS3693, cur-

with an external analog voltage.
