SUMMARY
The use of non-metallic fiber reinforced polymer bars (FRP) as the internal reinforcement of
concrete structures replacing the steel bars, has been used with good results, mainly for having a
proven anticorrosive stability. In addition, its tensile strength is superior to that of steel, holds up to
one tenth of its weight and presents magnetic transparency, so necessary in the buildings
associated with health programs. However, because of their eminently fragile nature that they
present onfailure, due to its elastic and linear tension-strain relation, i.e. it does not present yielding
point, it forces to conceive hyper-reinforced designs (reinforced ratio higher than the balanced ratio)
toguarantee thatmember fails by the crushing of concrete. According to this situation it is really
advantageous to seek solutions that improve the ductility problem presented by the structures that
use this type of reinforcement. This paper presents the current state of the knowledge about
engineering practical solutions to reduce the ductility problems in FRP reinforced concrete
structures. Among the main methods found in the literature, the addition of fibers to the concrete
mix and the use of hybrid reinforcement concept, either of steel bars coated with FRP or by design
of sections reinforced with steel bars and FRP simultaneously are found to be reasonable.
