Professional Readings / Sharings on issues
K-12 Implementation
I am not a fan of the previous administration. As much as possible, I dont want to be involved in any
political concerns and issues. Except if it has something to do with a very important issue like Education.
Since I believe, I will become a proud member of this sector soon, I want my opinion to be heard in my
own little ways like this essay and I want to shout it at the top of my lungs. I salute you Mr. President
for making this happened!!!
The governments K-12 program is a big leap in the educational system of the country. It is a program
that makes kindergarten mandatory and the additional two years to the basic education. It was
thoroughly studied by the brilliant minds of the officials of the Department of Education and by the
Aquino Administration years back. The main purpose is to uphold the quality of education beneficial to
all students of this country and for the coming generations and to reverse the declining educational
performance and rating towards its long-term educational reform for sustainable economic growth.
The K-12 will make our students fully equipped with the basic knowledge to work locally or
internationally. For students who will continue tertiary education, this program puts them at par with
their international counterparts and makes them more competitive in colleges and universities both here
and abroad. Those families who cant afford to send their children to college can still be trained and
qualified to local and international employment by the vocational tracks in senior high-school
curriculum. We are all aware that most of our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) are known to be one of
the most industrious, effective and efficient employees around the globe. They are intelligent workers
with a big heart that is why most foreign companies prefer Filipino talents compare to other nationalities.
And we are all proud of it! - GJM
Localization Policy of Hiring Teachers
There is no profession more essential than that of an educator and its time for all of us to embrace
and celebrate their importance and contribution to children. Queen Latifah
The Department of Education (DepEd) has given prospective public school teachers who are local
residents of a municipality or city priority when applying for teacher-positions in public schools in their
hometowns. In DepEd Order No. 3 series of 2013 issued by Education Secretary Armin Luistro, it was
specified that the ruling applies to the appointment or assignment of teachers in all public elementary
and secondary schools and other learning centers under DepEd. In filling up vacant positions, priority
shall be given to bona fide residents of the barangay, municipality, city or province where the school is
located, in no particular order, the order specified. Bona fide residents refer to a qualified applicant
who is, prior to appointment, a resident for a period of at least six months of a particular barangay,
municipality, city or province where the school is. This must be evidenced by legal documents to be
identified by DepEd.

teacher-applicants)
This DepEd order will help teachers to lessen the time of travel going to and from school, instead they
can spend more time with themselves or with their families. According to studies, a mere hour spent
enduring traffic in commuting alone could affect ones job greatly. Whats worse is that when employees
like teachers get stuck in gridlock, they feel stressed. A feeling which can also affect how they process
their deliverable. Some commuters these days experience a combo of tired muscles and mental stress
during commute. Worst is when teachers were assigned to remote areas and they need to rent a house
or room for their stay for the whole school days and will be away from their families. This will not affect
the personal satisfaction of a person to balance work and family time. We all know that family time
lessen the stress we experience from work. Aside from the time, they can also save money that they
spend commuting from home to school and vice versa. They can allot the resources to other more
important factors like food and medicines.
The talents within the community will be maximized because they will be prioritized in the hiring process.
They will also have the option to be hired in the nearby towns or municipalities. Because of these they
will be more effective facilitators of the classrooms to nurture the minds of the learners. -GJM
The use of Mother Tongue in Grade 1-3
Language is clearly the key to communication and understanding in all classroom settings. Using a
familiar language in teaching is the beginning of literacy and facilitates understanding of the lessons.
Students will be more confident in answering in mother tongue rather than other language such as
English. Students can express freely and cognitively by using their native language. Mother Tongue is the
first native language you have learned, and the only dialect used in most Filipino houses. Speaking and
using native regional dialect or mother tongue is important in childs overall development as a student.
It is a basic tool to help them learn the basic facts in the learning process. Before you learn other
languages, Mother Tongue is a powerful tool to learn foreign tongues. This will also show the sense of
regionalism and nationalism of the students.
On the other hand, some parents and students find Mother Tongue as a subject is a waste of time and
effort. According to them, regional dialects can be learned subconsciously outside school because it is
the only mode of communications students used in dealing with peers and family at home. Accept it or
not, in the professional world, English is the primary language used in communication such as memo,
business letters, minutes of the meeting, contracts and proposals, etc. The use mother tongue in grades
1-3, will not help students to learn the English language in their early school years. So if we use Mother
Tongue as mode of communication in teaching in all subjects (except English of course!) as early as Grade
1, we suppress students of the opportunity to learn English at the early age.
As a future teacher of this country, in my personal opinion, I dont see any problem using mother tongue
as a tool in teaching lessons for the students. Mother tongue-based schooling is often directed at the
most rural and marginalized group of people in the country who have lack of all kinds of services like
basic school facilities and health-medical assistance from the government. Failure to meet basic human
needs food, shelter and health will largely impact the performance of the students in the learning
process. So the only basic and fundamental tool or their starting point in learning is the use of Mother
Tongue. Isnt beneficial for the majority of students of our beloved country? -GJM
The Teaching Profession
Without Education, we will fail to appreciate the beauty of sunrise, and we will not understand the
meaning of dawn because we will all live in darkness. GJM
A world without educators is a dull world of ignorance. We will have no doctors and nurses to help us to
be healthy and to be cured of our diseases. There will be no engineers and architects who built
classrooms for students and buildings for professionals and business establishments; and engineers and
mechanics who make the different mode of transportations such as cars, buses etc. No police officers
who will preserve and protect the rights of all citizens. No lawyers who will help us and remind us of
our rights as a human being. Definitely no government leaders the Congress who will make and pass
laws, the Judiciary who will interpret the laws to be implemented by the Executive branch. No chemists
and scientists who will discover things that would be beneficial to a human being. Etc. name it you will
not have it!
I guess not.
As a future teacher, I believe that the only reward a teacher hopes and expects from the students is to
finish studies, become the future professionals of our society and more to be able to get a job, earn a
living and to be financially independent in the future. - GJM

SAMPLE LETTER TO THE BARANGAY
Greetings!
I and my SLP students for Teaching Profession subject from The Bicol State College of Applied Sciences
and Technology (BISCAST) would like to conduct survey in your barangay. We are conducting a research
in different barangays entitled, Children and Nature. This project explores childrens engagement with
nature today in comparison with using/playing computers or gadgets, in various contexts and with
different degrees of adult presence. Through the outlooks of the child, the parent, and the teachers, we
gain insights into different perspectives.
In line with this, may we request from your good office to allow us to conduct a simple survey from your
Barangay. This may involve randomly chosen residents and their children. Attach herewith is the copy of
the survey questionnaire.
May we also request assistance from your Barangay security officers that may accompany us as we
conduct the survey in your area.
Thank you!
Respectfully yours
