DescriptionoftheEverestsimulation

Inthisonlinesimulation,youwillplayoneoffiveormorerolesonateamofhikersattemptingto
reachthesummitofMountEverest.Eachparticipantwillbegiveninformationandresourcestouse
duringtheclimb.

Someteamswillhaveasixthperson,theobserveroftheteam.Thisteammemberisintheunique
positionofbeingabletooverseewhatishappeningduringthesimulation.Thoseteamsfortunate
enoughtohaveasixthmemberwillfindthemaninvaluableresourceforboththesimulationand
theassessment.Inexceptionalsituation,thecoordinatormayallocateasevenmemberteam.This
meanstheteamwillhavetwoobservers.

Preparationforthesimulation

YoumustfillinthepreferredcontactdetailssheetfoundonMoodle(coursewebsite)andgiveitto
yourtutorbeforetheweek2tutorial(byweekstarting3August).Ifyouchangetutorials,giveyour
contactdetailstoyournewtutor.

ActivateyourUNSWstudentemailaccountasanynotificationofteamchangeswillbesenttothis
emailaddress.

InWeek4(weekbeginning17August),youwillfindinformationaboutwhoisonyourteamandthe
linktotheEverestsimulationontheMoodle(coursewebsite).

TheSimulation
Studentsmustorganiseamongtheirteammateswhenandwheretheywilldobothsimulations.
Participationinbothsimulationsiscrucial,withoutwhichyouwillnotbeabletowriteyour
assignment2.

Eachpersonmustusetheirowncomputerwithinternetaccess.Teamsarestronglyencouragedto
tryatleastoneexerciseasavirtualteaminseparatelocationsusingtheirowncomputers.For
bothEverest1and2,thesimulationmustbeplayedbyeveryoneatthesametime.

ThereisalinkonMoodle(coursewebsite)thatwillgiveyouaccesstotheEverestwebsite.Each
personshouldreadthepreparatorymaterialfortheirroleonlinebeforethesimulation.

Duringthesimulation

Somegroupmembersmayneedtoberescuedandhelicopteredoffthemountainduringthe
simulation.Thesepeopledonotquitthesimulation,butmuststayengagedandincontactwith
theirteammembersuntilthesimulationisfinished.

Assessment

ThereisnoalternateassessmentfortheEverestReport(Assignment2).Thusitiscrucialthatyour
teamisorganisedandarrangesatimetodothesimulationandthateachteammemberparticipates
atthattime.YouwillnotbeabletocompletetheEverestReportifyoudonotparticipateinthe
Everestexercise.

Aftereachsimulationallteammembers,exceptfortheObserver,needtotakeascreenshotand
printofftheirresults(i.e.,thepercentageofindividualgoalsachievedandthepercentageofteam
goalsachievedinthesimulation).Ifyouareunabletoprintoffthisinformation,besuretowrite
downyourresults.Thereisatableprovidedforyoulaterinthisdocumentforthispurpose.

ForEverest1thisdocumentmustbeprintedoffbeforeMonday,7September.Onthisdatethe
simulationisclearedforEverest2andalltheresultswillbeerased.Thecoordinatorwillnotbeable
