Executive Summary
The documented SAG events have been identified back in February 2017 , since February the issue surrounding the Barite SAG has
been neglected to a degree and remained unsolved from an AHG perspective
This report does not focus on the issues raised in February but tries to address the recent issues faced with within the active mud
system with Barite Sag seen during the 8 3/8 section. Although these two concerns could be related the rig is simply limited in what
tests it can conduct and in what capacity it can act
Allot of conflicting stories and contradictory testing has been uncovered but alot of questions still remain
However a few clear observations have been made while focusing on the active system alone, these are as follows :
a) loss situation restricted product addition
b) product shortages of key component DUOFLO HT, lead to product substitution of POLYPAC. Polypac never tested for this
section at downhole conditions nor tested at these mud weights .DUOFLO HT compromises of 45% of formulation polymers
c) product substitution with POLYPAC and other remaining Polymers never meet programmed concentrations throughout the 8
3/8 section
d) Active system was treated with a mixture of polymer additions some SWACO some competitor , system still below
programmed formulation but first time active held mud weight under surface static conditions only
e) Current system is a mixture of two companies material with no clear understanding if its stable under downhole conditions,
although surface static tests passed
f) Loss rates improved over last days of the 8 3/8 section meaning longer incubating times for polymers downhole, allowing
polymers to stay downhole longer
g) current system has high rheology structure , that is out of programmed specifications and not tested for expected downhole
conditions
In conclusion the active system as it stands is out of specification with a history of barite sagging , the surface problem of it
sagging may have been corrected temporary but downhole conditions have not been tested on it . Indications will come just
prior to cementing when a circulation brings back a sample. The rig is limited with what experiments it can conduct on a mix
match system
The barite Sagging issue from an active mud perspective with a loss situation coupled into it can be possibly attributed back
to product substitution issue and failure to meet programmed concentrations, this is only if all product quality issues are
ruled out.
An independent mud testing document has been also constructed to help troublshoot any chemical related failures, this can be
reviewed also - " Investigative mud testing HD 10 sag"
Objectives of this document:
To determine an understanding of what the active mud system means in terms of the barite SAG issues seen throughout the 8 3/8
section
Ideally comprehend what caused the Barite Sag in order to eliminate it
worse case construct a way forward to safely continue operations without facing further SAG issues
During the course of the 8 3/8 section daily losses meant mud was continuously mixed.
Daily additions of premixed mud into the active system were maintained , the total products added to the system prior to running
casing are listed below
you will notice that the material used below are a mixture of SWACO and Competitor material as various pilot tests were run on
surface then bleed back into system. This was done only after Barite Sag issues with SWACO material was seen during XPT trip, after
exhausting all efforts trying to keep mud stable , experiments were conducted on active system and bleed back in with AHG Adrian
Istrate ( arrived on the rig 5/4/17)
Products used into mud system from 5th to 12th of April (running casing).
Highlighted notes:
active system currently has high rheology to try compensate barite sag tendency , system not as per programmed specifications ( see Mud
program for details )
Current mud system Rheology:
600 112
300 82
200 70
100 57

Product concentration sheets listed below is ONLY a best case estimate of the system concentration as of that time period ,as mud that is mixed
on surface and added to system under a loss situation is complicated.
it gives us a snapshot in time of the current product formulations. it can help indicate system stability if related back to lab testing
During the loss situations the programmed system were not mixed entirely to mud program specifications
1. DUOFLO HT not available by SWACO , DUOFLO HT substituted ( 29th march , DUOFLO HT not available )with PolyPac.
PolyPAC not part of original tested formulation .DUOFLO HT makes up 45% of the system polymer formulation
2. Wellbore conditions were under losses , mixing time and maintaining operations meant formulations were streamlined along with
substituted products - see example below
Material Programmed concentrations ppb Mixed during losses/product shortages
Water 284.42 As required
Soda Ash 0.25 0.3
Sodium Chloride salt 40.31 40.31
Caustic Soda 1.0 0.3
Duovis 0.2 2
Dual Flo HT 6 Not
Polypac Not in original formulation 3
Driscal D 3 0.5
Dristemp 4 2
Safescav CA 1 0
PTS 200 3 2
MI Cide 0.2 0.3
Safescav HS 2 2
Zinc Carbonate 1 1
Barite 74.03 As required
Safe carb 2 34 0
Safe carb 20 16 0
Considering the situation was under a loss situation it can be appreciated that mixing time is critical, a simplified system formulation is
acceptable but in this instance we have two variable changes
a) System polymer concentration mixed 7.5 ppb VS total programmed 13.2 ppb
b) product substituted from DUOFLO HT to a non tested product of Polypac
c) high temp product addition without circulation /drilling is limited as requires high amount of shear
On the 5th of April Adrian arrived to conducted an inspection of the mud and try troubleshoot below is snapshot of the concentrations
on arrival.
concentration sheet on his arrival yield a total of 5.42ppb of polymer vs programed amounts of 13.2 ppb
On the 12th after a series of mixing was done into the active system ,the concentration of the active was considerably increased . A
mixture of SWACO products and competitor products used ( details listed below )
Noted Highlights:
a clear increase in low temperature polymers and a slight drop in high temperature polymers , also shows an inclusion of some
competitor polymers
programmed formulations never meet
DUOFLO HT only supplied once and concentration not clear if maintained in system ( indications show 0.6 ppb)
On arrival of AHG mud engineer Adrian , various mixing into the active along with independent investigative testing was incorporated
into system

6. 10.04.2017 :Mixed batch of mud using Halliburton products (Investigative Test number 2) Used 3 sx of Barazan D plus, after
test completed remaining +/- 85 bbls was transferred in active system on same day.
Mixed batch of mud using Halliburton Products on 10.04.2017 - (Investigative Test number 3) , also after finish mixing and
transferring 10 bbls to cement displacement tank, 85 bbls remaining mud was transferred to active as well. Polymers used
for this batch : Barazan D 2 sx, N-Drill HT 10 sx, Driscal D 3 sx, Dristemp 4 sx.
Also Mixed : 2 x Caustic, 2 x MI CIDE, 2 x Soda ASH, 1x Oxygon.
Mud system on arrival was tested for static stability within a controlled tank .
10 bbls of mud was taken from active and left for 6 hrs , after 6 hrs it was observed that a liquid phase and solid phase separation where
occurring. Mud could not be dumped easily . see report document " Investigative mud testing HD10 Sag".
After the active had been treated over the period of the 5th to the 12th , another control test was conducted to see if any affect had taken place
loss rates over last few days improved meaning system had time to heat and integrate- see appendix below
