Thank You, Pastors and Staff of Montgomery Baptist Churches!

Thank You, Pastors and Staff of Montgomery Baptist Churches! Neal Hughes Director of Missions “And I

“And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and

understanding.”

October has become the traditional month where most churches have chosen to say an official “thank you” to pastors and staff for their kingdom service. Often, these friends are engaged in a thankless task. They tirelessly wake up every day thinking about the church and go to sleep doing the same. In many ways, they need the “heart of a dove and the hide of a rhinoceros.” Though challenging, being a pastor is still the most rewarding calling on earth. I would be remiss if I didn’t say on behalf of my ministry colleagues that it is quite an

honor to serve God’s people. We are humbly grateful for each of you, and would give our lives in service to our Savior’s Bride. What a privilege it is to be called pastor!

Beloved, as pastor and people, we are family. And it is good to remember “family”

during special occasions like Pastor Appreciation Month. If you are still thinking of some ideas in which to “bless” your pastor and staff this October, let me give you a few:

1. Send a personal note to each pastor and staff saying that you are praying for them. Note a specific part of their ministry where you are interceding on their behalf.

2. Honor your pastor and staff through a collection of cards and letters from each of the membership, and present to them in a corporate way on the Lord’s day. Some may choose to insert gift cards. Others, a helpful and sweet word. But the thought along with the united effort will mean so very much to these faithful shepherds.

3. Contact your pastor’s mentor ahead of the Sunday you have chosen to express appreciation. Use Skype, audio conferencing, or an advance video to bring their voices (and faces) into your worship service for a brief reflection and special prayer. This creative approach will never be forgotten by your pastors. The people who hear the stories from those who have known these leaders through the years will be blessed as well.

4. Don’t forget your pastor’s family. They are standing faithfully alongside their loved one as one team. Be sure to create something special for each of them.

5. If you have the financial resources, send your pastor and his wife to a retreat designed especially for them (don’t forget the rest of the staff, too). Two ideas might be the Cove in North Carolina (www.thecove.org) or the Timothy Barnabas Conference led by Pastor Johnny Hunt (timothybarnabas.org). The respite will pay all kinds of spiritual dividends back to you as a congregation.

As director of missions, I am privileged in many ways to be your pastor’s pastor. I would like to express what you probably already know… you are blessed with some of the most gifted, holy people of God on the planet! As the scripture says, they are “worthy of double honor” (1 Timothy 5:17). The Lord has called them to the River Region, and we need these leaders to stay here for a long time.

Therefore, thank you in advance for joining me in being their greatest cheerleader. Mary and I count it a joy to be on mission with each of you. See you soon at the Montgomery Baptist Association Annual Celebration on November 6.
