ADVERBS

An adverb is a word that goes with the verb to add information to its meaning. Adverbs can add
information to verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. There are many different types of adverbs: Time, place,
manner, degree and frequency.

FORM
1. Adding -ly to adjectives.

Quick Quickly Honest Honestly Rapid Rapidly Nice Nicely

2. Adding -ily to adjectives that finish with -y.

Easy Easily Happy Happily Crazy Crazily Funny - Funnily

3. Adding -ally to adjectives that finish with -ic.

Automatic Automatically Tragic Tragically Magic Magically

4. Changing with -ly the adjectives finished with -le.

Horrible Horribly Terrible Terribly Simple Simply Responsible - Responsibly

5. Some irregular adverbs dont need to add -ly whatsoever.

TYPES
There are different types of adverbs. Remember that they help us to add more information to the
sentence.

Time
These adverbs answer to the question When? and they can go at the beginning of the sentence or at
the end.

Today - Tomorrow - Last week - Already - Next month - Eventually - Still


Hoy Maana La semana pasada Ya El mes que viene Eventualmente An
Soon - Yet - Now - Later - Ago
Pronto Todava Ahora Ms tarde Hace tiempo

Examples:

I go home today. Tomorrow I will finish it. I already did it. I went there last week. Do it now Ill go later
Voy a casa hoy. Maana lo acabar Ya lo hice. Fui all la semana pasada. Hazlo ahora Ir ms tarde.

Place
These adverbs answer to the question Where? and they normally go after the verb or the object.

Here - There - Everywhere - Anywhere - Nowhere - Over there - Down

Away - Outside - Inside - Back - Behind - Above - Below

Examples:

The dog is here. Im outside the house. The car is behind the bushes. They could be anywhere.
El perro est aqu. Estoy fuera de la casa. El coche est detrs de los arbustos. Podran estar en cualquier lugar.

Degree
These adverbs answer to the questions How many? How much?... and they normally go before the
word they modify.

Very - Almost - Really - Hardly - Quite - Barely - Deeply - Highly

Completely - Much - Fully - Extremely - Too - Totally - Just

These adverbs answer to the questions How? and they normally go after the object or the verb.

Loudly - Carefully - Softly - Beautifully - Fast - Hard - Slowly - Good

Examples:

Do it carefully please. The game ended badly. The car is slightly damaged. Go there fast. I did it easily.

Frequency
These adverbs answer to the questions How long? How many times?... and they normally go before the
verb except with the verb to be that they go behind..

Never - Occasionally - Generally - Hardly Ever

Examples:

I go there often. You are always late. Sometime I do my homework. You rarely sing. They never win.
Voy all a menudo. Siempre llegas tarde. A veces hago mi tarea. Raramente cantas. Nunca ganan.
