Christ The King Sunday

Sermon: The Shepherd King

Rev. James Steiner

Scripture: Ezekiel 34: 11-16, 20-17; Ephesians 1: 15-23

Each should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all
things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians
9:7-9).

Dear Friends in Christ,

Several weeks ago, I received a call from a company called Epic Fundraising. After a brief
introduction, the caller asked, So how do you do your fundraising?

I thought for a moment and answered, Well, I wouldnt say we actually do fundraising. Our
approach is that Jesus, God himself, came to earth and lived with us, ministered to us, laughed with
us, cried with us, and died for us. Because of that death and his resurrection, we receive the
promise of eternal life.

I continued, Our position on fundraising is that God commands we give back to God a tenth of
everything we have, and we get to keep the other nine. God gets one, we keep nine. God gets one-
tenth, and we receive the grace of Christ, and eternal life.

I told the person, Thats what we have been preaching, and I hate to use the word successful, but it
seems to have worked pretty well for us.

There was a rather long pause, and the person finally responded, Oh! Well, thanks for your time!

Last year, your Stewardship Team introduced a different way of looking at our annual Giving
Program, called Consecration Sunday. This year, Consecration Sunday will be November 12.
That day, you will be asked to turn in your 2018 ESTIMATE OF GIVING CARD. The Team will
be sending a letter, along with the card.

Last year, we asked YOU to consider, What percent of my income is God calling (telling?
encouraging? cajoling? commanding?) me to give to Hill Church in 2018? Please pray about this
in the weeks ahead.

Perhaps you were convicted to begin to increase your giving to a tenth; perhaps you were convicted
to give more than a tenth (by the way, thats what we call offerings!). I will be delivering three
sermons on Stewardship, presenting Gods take on why, how, and what to give back to him.

As I said last year, Stewardship is not a referendum on the budget, or expressing an opinion about
Hill, our leaders, our denomination, or me. Nor, as I told my caller, is Stewardship about
fundraising. Stewardship is our incarnational response to God on the Cross. God commands us to
do lots of things one of those commands is to give back to him a tenth of everything we have.

Please read the letter elsewhere in this newsletter from your Stewardship Elders, and begin to pray
about your response to the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus for 2018.

In Christ,

Pastor Jim

Consecration Sunday is Coming, November 12

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money
Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay the bills. Rather, these congregations see
financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by
supporting their churchs mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes.

This year, the Hill Session is continuing the Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to
teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving.

Consecration Sunday is based upon the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or
her own spiritual development, rather than on the need for the church to receive. Instead of treating
people as members of a social club or non-profit organization who should pay dues, we treat people
like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship.

Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to
the question, What percentage of my income is God calling me to give? During worship on
Consecration Sunday, November 12, we will ask you, the Hill family, to make your financial
commitments to our missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in Butler and around the
world.

Every member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending worship
on Consecration Sunday, November 12. Even if you are opposed to completing a card, please join
us in worship regardless. The process will be done in such a way that no one will feel embarrassed if
he or she chooses not to fill out a card.

We will not make home visits to ask people to complete cards. During worship, Pastor Jims message
will focus on stewardship as a response to the grace of Christ. At the end of the service, there will be
a brief period of introduction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a
confidential act of worship.

In a few weeks, you will receive a letter with more information, along with an Estimate of Giving
Card. Since there will be no home visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every
effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday, November 12.

Thanks in advance for your prayerful consideration of this letter, and for your participation in worship,
Consecration Sunday, November 12.

In Christ,

Session Stewardship Elders

Prayer For Veterans And Military Men And Women

Gracious God, we give thanks for military men and women, both from the
past and present, and for their courageous service and sacrifice to our
country and its people to secure the blessings of life, liberty, and justice for
all. May our remembrance be a timely reminder that our freedom was
purchased at high cost, and should not be taken for granted. Give us
resolve to labor in faithful service to you until all share the benefits of
freedom, justice, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

ITS SHOEBOX TIME!

Christmas is about sharing the gift of God's Son, Jesus Christ, with the world.
Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to poor children around the world
through gift-filled shoeboxes and the Good News of Gods love. You can share
Gods love with needy children in Honduras, Kosovo, or another country by
participating with other members of our church. We will have more information in an upcoming church
bulletin insert, or you can visit the Operation Christmas child website at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for
ideas, boy and girl box labels, and an informative video. You can start by filling out and coloring the
enclosed letter to put in the shoebox. Also consider if you want your shoebox to go to a boy or girl and
what age group you would like to buy for. There are three age groups: 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. The 10-14 group
sees the least amount of shoeboxes donated so we encourage you to consider them. All shoeboxes need to
be brought to church on or before Sunday, November 19th to make sure that the children receive them in
time for Christmas. If shopping and filling shoeboxes are not for you, we will also accept monetary
donations. It costs $9 to mail one shoebox.
DUE TO NEW CUSTOMS REGULATIONS, TOOTHPASTE AND CANDY,
INCLUDING CHOCOLATE, ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED!
Don't forget to bring your shoebox gift to church on or before Sunday,
November 19th. What a perfect gift to give in honor of Jesus' birthday!
Keep Me Warm Trees
Once again we are asking the congregation to help to decorate our Keep Me Warm Trees.
Beginning November 15th we will have a tree set up in the Overflow Area and also one in the
Fellowship Hall to receive your contributions through December 20th. Warm
clothing, new or gently used, such as mittens, caps, jackets, sweaters, scarves, gloves,
socks, etc. will be greatly appreciated. We thank you for all your beautiful items in
the past and in advance for your help this year. There seems to be a great need this
year as in the past.

sisters are invited to meet in Fellowship Hall for dinner with the
Wednesday on the Hill crowd. Hot dogs, burgers, chips and
dessert! Then its off to the sanctuary to show you what weve been up to for two

Weve set up a CLOSED* Facebook group for Wednesday

Night families Wednesdays On The Hill & More!. Want to
know if were open or closed if the weather turns bad suddenly?
Look at FB. Have a question about what your kids learned this
week? Post it on FB. Wish you could have seen that game Mr.
Jim came up with? Check the FB group pix. We really want a
fast and easy way to communicate with the Wednesday
community so if you get a request to join, please do! Anyone can invite others to join
but they must be approved by our Admins. If you think Admin wont recognize
someone, please let Kathy Davis, Nancy Daugherty or Elean Heist know who that
person is. Obviously, we want to include all family members but we also have a duty
to protect our kids. So, in addition to making sure the person you invite is appropriate,
please do not borrow pictures from the group and post, tag anyone in them, or
share them.

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

We continue to hear from our student scholars. This is a note from a Bubiashie student on
August 18, 2017.

Dear Hill Church,

I am Emelia Opare, a beneficiary of the educational scholarship by Hill Presbyterian Church, USA.
Currently, I am in my second year in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)
in Kumasi where I am pursuing a four year programme in Hospitality and Tourism Management. In
fact, I am very grateful for the support and timely intervention given to me. I hope everyone is doing fine
and everything is going on well. When I vacated, that was in May 2017, I went to do my internship in
one of the big hotels in Accra and to tell you the truth I had a very great experience in my field.

Recently, that was on the August 6, 2017, one of the groups in the E. P Church Bubiashie i.e E. P
Students Union (EPSU), its a union for the youth, we had our 23rd Anniversary and it was a blast and a
success, all thanks be to God.

Also, when I wrote my second semester examination, and to my surprise, I came out with a first class
position. I am very happy because God really saw me through and also with the support and prayers you
all always show and given me. I have promised never to let you and your team down, and my family as
well because its never easy being at where I am now.

Greetings from my granddad, Mr. Joseph Kwami Afenya (Catechist Retired). I hope everyone is
doing fine. Extend my greetings and let them know I am really grateful for all efforts towards my
education.

I continue to pray to the good Lord to always bless you and your team for giving someone like me
such an opportunity. I would like to end here saying, I would be reporting back to school next week
Friday i.e on the 25th August, 2017.
Many thanks and may the good Lord replenish your resources in thousand folds.

Yours faithfully,
Emelia Opare

PRAYER CONCERNS CONTINUE

Please continue to keep the Bubiashie District Churchs, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie
Scholarship Committee, as well as the students, and Joshua Heikkila, the West Africa Liaison for the PC
(USA), in your prayers. Also for Dr. McWilson Koku Atakro, the Executive Presbyter and Moderator
for the West Volta Presbytery.

The Ghana team will be conducting an Election Day Bake Sale. Election day is
November 7th. Hill Church is a city precinct voting location. Proceeds will
benefit the Ghana scholarship fund for young women.
Donations of baked goods will be appreciated and can be
delivered to the church kitchen by 7 p.m. on Monday,
November 6th. Last year's participation was
spectacular. Thank you. We are also looking for persons to
host our table. A sign-up sheet is posted in the overflow area.
