Abstract

(Promotion Policy of APDCL)

A good promotion policy provides a number of incentives to the employees to work more
effectively and efficiently. It also aims to recognize more efficient workers in the
organization. A distinguishing feature of a good Human Resource Management is to
formulate such a promotion policy which satisfies its workforce and gives them an
opportunity to grow further.
This study is an assessment of the way promotions, can be a motivation factor
towards the employees performance. The study targeted the promotion policy of group 'A'
Officers in Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).
In the process of carrying out this study, it was guided by the following objectives:
i. To establish the procedures which the APDCL uses in the exercise of promoting its
group 'A' Officers.
ii. To assess the procedures used in the promotion of the Officers.
iii. To investigating the effectiveness of promotions as a motivation of the Officers of the
APDCL.
iv. To suggest the possible way forward for the improvement of performance at
workplace in APDCL.
The study recommends that the promotions as a motivation factor is of paramount
importance in any profession and that the following should be done: improvement of the
general welfare, provisions of good social amenities, proper induction of the Officers when
promoted, job security to be provided, insurance of the Officers, increment in the
remuneration, avoidance of political bickering among others.
However the Respondents indicated that Promotion Policy has effects on the
employee performance this is because as employees enter into employment, they expect to
progress from a lower level in the organization to a higher level. The Respondents also
confirmed that the promotion policy has both positive and negative effect on the employees, a
well formulated policy will help motivating the employees to work hard and hence encourage
for better performance of the employees.
RECOMMENDATION:
The following are the recommendations to solve the problems in the process of
promotion policy are as follows:
1. The process of promotion policy system in APDCL should be based not only with the
work experience or seniority but also with the performance of the employees.
2. A monthly performance appraisal must be developed by HR department here they
overcome all welcomed before promotion.
3. The time period for the next promotion should be less than the existing time.
