Pressure Regulation Regulator Designation
Flowrate Coefficients
The valve flowrate coefficient KG is an important parameter for the choice of RMG gas
pressure regulators
The KG-value indicates the flowrate of the valve in full open position under an absolute inlet
pressure of pe = 2 bar and an absolute outlet pressure of pa =1 bar. The KG-value is deter-
mined under standard conditions on a test stand with air as a gaseous medium. The KG-
value is a factor which indicates the flowrate capacity of a gas pressure regulator.
All KG-values stated in the RMG-leaflets refer to natural gas as a flowrate medium
(ρn = 0.83 kg/m3).
The diagram on page 15 shows the graphic method to determine the flowrate coefficient KG
required for given service data of
This graphic determination is based on the following formulas for approximate flowrate
calculation valid for natural gas:
pa pa
pe 0,5 pe 0,5
qn 2 • qn
KG = in m3/h KG = in m3/h
pa·(pe - pa) pe
Pressure for the formulas to be inserted in absolute values; pressure in diagram to be read
as overpressures.
12
Pressure Regulation Regulator Designation
Flowrate Coefficients
Note! The flowrate coefficient of the regulator chosen should always be higher than
the flowrate coefficient determined from the diagram or calculated through
the formulas in order to ensure sufficient reserve capacity for the regulating
operation. We recommend to choose a regulator with a flowrate coefficient of
approximately 10% above the required value.
Attention! For regulators with internal measuring impulse the gas velocity in the outlet
duct (measuring point of outlet pressure) should not exceed v = 20 m/s.
Please also refer to the „General Operating Instructions for Gas Pressure
Regulators and Safety Devices, Examples of installations“ (extract see page
372)
In the general regulating and metering terminology the flowrate capacity of a valve canalso
be indicated by its kvs-value. The relation between kvs and KG is given in ithe following
equation:
KG = 34 · kvs in m3/h
13
Pressure Regulation Regulator Designation
Conversion to Other Gases
For other gases, the flowrate should be converted into the equivalent natural gas flowrate:
qn Gas
qn nat. gas = in m3/h
f
read from diagram: required valve flow rate coefficient KG = 1600 m3/h
regulator chosen: gas pressure regulator RMG 512 - DN 50 with KG = 2000 m3/h

Application
The gas pressure regulator RMG 266 was developed in collaboration with the RUHRGAS AG
for the official recalibration of conditioned corrector systems.
The regulator is characterized by the following special features:
❑ extremely high outlet pressure range with one setpoint spring from 0.1 bar up to 90 bar
❑ optimal constancy of the adjusted regulating pressure over longer operation periods with
a very low gas consumption
❑ uncomplicated and exact adjusting possibilities of fixed setpoint pressure values

Comment
The diameter of the throttle and the SBV-orifice are fixed so that more gas is always re-
lieved to the atmosphere through the safety relief valve stage than can penetrate into the
device, even during failure conditions. Therefore, an uncontrolled increase of the outlet
pressure is avoided in case of defects.

Comment
A throttle limits the maximal flow to qn = 2 m3/h according to the application range, so that
the maximal volume of the SBV-stage equalizes the volume for pe max.
I.e. the diameter of the throttle and the SBV-orifice are fixed so that more gas is always re-
lieved to the atmosphere through the safety relief valve stage than can penetrate into the
device, even during failure conditions. Therefore, an uncontrolled increase of the outlet
pressure is avoided in case of defects.

75
Pressure Regulation Maximum Inlet Pressure
Series 300 and 400
Inlet pressure range ∆pe (max. inlet pressure) for diaphragm assemblies
The accuracy class AC and the lock-up pressure class SG stipulated by the DVGW type
tests are confirmed under the following conditions:
„The inlet pressure may exceed the ∆pe-figure stated in the table at the most by twice its
value, provided the inlet pressure deviations ∆pe do not exceed the pe max-value stated in the
table. However, it may not exceed the nominal pressure rating.”
ATTENTION: This statement is not valid for RMG 409 with pe > 25 bar.
The limitation of the inlet pressure range ∆pe for a diaphragm assembly is not given for rea-
sons of material strength but in the interest of maintaining the regulating accuracy. The inlet
pressure deviations though may not exceed the limit of the valve´s nominal pressure rating.
76
Pressure Regulation Maximum Inlet Pressure
Series 300 and 400
Example:
RMG 330, DN 50, valve seat diameter 33 mm, diaphragm assembly size 1 (see page 57).
The table shows an inlet pressure range of ∆pe = 10 bar, so the inlet pressure may deviate in
a range of 10 bar up and down. Beginning with the given deviation range between 0 bar and
10 bar, this ∆pe -range may be transferred to a higher level. The maximum inlet pressure
(value stated in brackets) though may not be exceeded.
The permissible inlet pressure change ∆pe = 10 bar can be used as follows:
A possible inlet pressure variation of pe1 = 0 bar to pe2 = 10 bar is standard, but equally
an inlet pressure deviation of pe1 = 2 bar to pe2 = 12 bar could be possible, or a deviation of
pe1 = 6 bar to pe2 = 16 bar. In every case the valve´s regulating accuracy is maintained.
Should however the inlet pressure deviations be larger than the stated ∆pe-value, then the
regulating accuracy will become poorer.
ATTENTION: The inlet pressure deviations may never exceed the limit of the valve´s
nominal pressure rating.
The scheme shows how the inlet pressure range ∆pe may be transferred for this example:

Stations and Accessories Determination of Preheaters
station accessories: odourizing systems, pre-heaters, etc.
The reduction of the pressure of natural gas, e.g. in gas pressure regulators causes a
cooling of the gas. This change of the gas temperature is generally kown as „the Joule-
Thomson-Effect“.
That is why -under certain conditions, such as are given by a high inlet pressure or a high
pressure cut- it is necessary to preheat the gas.
Rough estimation of the heat needed for natural gas preheating:
W = qn · ∆tges · ρn · cp in kJ/h
Example:
given: gas flowrate qn = 5000 m3/h
inlet pressure pe = 70 bar
outlet pressure pa = 4 bar
gas inlet temperature tE = 273,16 K
required gas outlet temperature tA = 278,16 K
Considering a preheating efficiency factor η = 0,85 the required heat quantity comes up to
W = 408650 kJ/h.

What is an offtake station? A regulating and metering station designed to reduce the
gas pressure to the level of the downstream mains and to
meter the gas flow „handed over“ or „taken off“.
Why do we store natural gas? As the natural gas consumption is subject to daily and
seasonal fluctuations of considerable extent, it is an
economic necessity to store natural gas during periods of
low demand in order to secure the gas availability for
periods of high or peak demands.
Which are the main natural We distinguish between 2 types of natural gas referred to
gas types and qualities? as type L and H.
„L“ stands for „low“, meaning that this type of natural gas
has a combustion value of approximately 10 kWh/m3. This
gas comes from Dutch of German fields.
„H“ stands for „high“, meaning that this type of gas has a
combustion value of approximately 11 ...12 kWh/m3.
What does DVGW mean? „DVGW“ is the abbreviation of „Deutscher Verein des Gas-
