THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR

By Rhian Berruto, Mileiry Villalobos, and Shaina Tano

A long time ago,
America was very small.
Mommies and Daddies were
having more babies and
there wasnt enough room
for everybody, so, people
wanted to move west. It was
their Manifest Destiny- an
obvious fate that they had
to move west.
The only problem
was, Mexico owned the
land they wanted. So,
two people who both
wanted to be our
president wanted get
those lands for the big
families. One of the men,
Mr. Polk, won and he
became our president!
Yay! He was going to get
that land for us!
Hoorraayyy!
Mexicos people who
were living in Mexicos MONEY!

land, did NOT want to

share, and even though
Mr. Polk offered to pay a
NO
LOT of money, Mexico said
they still would not share.
Mr. Polk was angry
because sharing is caring.
He wanted to fight them.
Mr. Polks army got real
close to Mexicos land and
Mexico attacked.
Mexico told them to back off. This is war!
The army said,No!. They
began to fight. A lot of Mr.
Polks army died. When he got
home, he told a lie. Do you
know what he said? He said
that it was Mexico that
walked into his land, not him,
and killed his people. They
declared war.
Young men from the big
families wanted to help fight.
Some went to America to
fight the Mexican people
there. They took over
Sonoma in California, which
is very close to here, accept
those boys did not want to
give that land to Mr. Polk.
They made a bear flag and
said they were
independent-all by
themselves. This was called
the Bear Flag Revolt.
A army captain in the
mountains near by, heard of the
Bear Flag Revolt and went to
help the boys. They fought the
mexicans and they surrendered .
Mr.Polks army took over Buena
Vista, Veracruz, and Mexico City.
September 14,1847 Mexico lost
all of its land.
In February 1848,
Mexico and the United
States (thats us!) signed
the Treaty of Guadalupe
Hidalgo, which officially
ended the war, forced
Mexico to give up most of
their land, and gave the
Mexican people still living
there freedom and liberty.
Finally the U.S got the
land that they wanted for
15 million dollars.
Even though America was
happy to have the land, the
Mexicans still living there
were not. The big families
wanted to move onto the land
the Mexicans were living on
and that made them angry.
They constantly argued and
fought. The Mexicans often
went bankrupt trying to
prove they owned their
property. They ended up
having to sell their land to
the big families.
But other than going
bankrupt and the small
arguments, the new and
finished U.S respected the
other cultures. For
example, many cities show
hispanic heritage, Mexican
and American holidays are
celebrated, Laws were
printed in multiple
languages, being different
was and is cool, and
everybody shared their
stuff and ideas. And they
all lived happily ever after
due to manifest destiny.
