Probability = (favorable outcomes)/(total outcomes)

Here Total outcomes , that is total possible case to pick 3 balls are 9C3 = 84

Favorable Outcome= pick 1 red ball, 1 black ball and 1 blue ball.
= (2C1 * 3C1* 4C1)=24

Probability = 24 /84

Probability = 2/7

To select 3 balls of different colors we have to select one ball of each color.

The number of ways of drawing 1 red ball out of two =2

Similarly, the number of ways of drawing 1 black ball out of three = 3

and the number of ways of drawing 1 blue ball out of four = 4

The total number of selecting 3 balls from the box is 9C3 =84

So, the probability is =(2*3*4)/84 = 2/7

We've 2 red, 3 black & 4 blue balls thus 9 in total.

Ways of choosing 3 from 9 balls = 9C3 = 84.

Now, you can choose a red, a black and a blue ball in 2*3*4 = 24 ways.

Probability = 24/84 = 2/7.

3 balls are chosen with each having different colour. It means 1 is black, 1 blue and 1
red.

So

1 black can be chosen from 3 in 3 ways

1 blue can be chosen from 4 in 4 ways and

1 red can be chosen from 2 in 2 ways.

So number of cases of choosing 3 balls at random where all of them are of different
Colors

or in other words

number of cases of choosing 3 balls at random where one is black, one blue and 1 red
is = 3*4*2=24

The box contains = 3+4+2=9 balls

So 3 can be chosen from 9 in 9C3 = (9*8*7)/6=84 ways

So required probability= 24/84 = 1/6

*Layman explanation*

Let us define three simple events E r , E B andE b for selecting one red ball, one
black ball and one blue ball from the bag respectively.

Number of way of selecting one red ball = 2 C1 = 2 ways

Number of way of selecting one black ball = 3 C1 = 3 ways

Number of way of selecting one blue ball = 4 C1 = 4 ways

Let us define another event E for selecting 3 balls randomly from the bag.

Number of ways of selecting 3 balls from a total of (2+3+4 = 9 balls) =

9! 987
9
C3 = =
321
= 84 ways
3!6!

n(E) will form the sample space for the question. So, total number of outcomes n(S)
= n(E) = 84

Since we need exactly one red, one black and one blue ball in the output, let us define
another event E c . Clearly, the event E c represents the occurrence of simple events

important to note that these events are mutually independent, to say that occurrence
one event doesn't affect the occurrence of the other event.

E c = E r andE B andE b

n(E c ) = n(E r E B E b )

n(E c ) = n(E r ) n(E B ) n(E b ) for independent events.

n(E c ) = 2 3 4 = 24

Probability of selecting all the three different colored balls = P(E c ) =

First of all we have 10 balls of which 2 are red, 3 are black and 4 are blue.
If we can think carefully, the question is given that, when 3 balls are drawn, the balls
are of different colors. There are 3 colors. So definitely one ball should be drawn from
each of the color.
So the number of ways of happening the above case is 4C1*3C1*2C1.
Let it be T(E).
The number of ways of drawing three balls from 9 balls is given as 9C3. Let this be
S(E).
Let the probability of happening the given condition be P(E).
Then according to definition of probability, we calculate it as,
P(E)=T(E)/S(E).
P(E)=4*3*2/9C3.
=24/84.
=2/7.
Thanks
