Vice President for the Loyola Schools

SUBJECT: 1 st SEMESTER CALENDAR CHANGES

The recent declaration of special non-working days in November, on top of several class
suspensions, has necessitated a review of our 1 st Semester calendar. Given the remaining weeks of
the semester, in the interest of keeping to quality time in fulfilling our responsibilities , the Vice
Presidents Council agreed to make the following changes:

29 November 2017 (Wednesday) will no longer be a Study Day. Regular classes will be
held on this day for both undergraduate and graduate classes. While the week of
November 13 to 18 can be utilized by teachers and students to work on individual or group
projects and assignments, we have designated November 17 as a study day, in preparation
for final exams, in lieu of November 29.
Final Exams will begin on 4 December 2017 (Monday) instead of 1 December 2017. 1-2
December 2017 (Friday and Saturday) will be regular class days. The revised schedule of
exams is as follows:

o Monday 4 th - Thursday 7 th December 2017:Written Exams for weekday classes

o Saturday 9 th December 2017: Exams for Saturday classes
o Monday 4 th -Friday 8 th December 2017: Oral Exams

Note: In the event that 8 December 2017 is declared a special non-working holiday, oral
exams may extend up to 9 December 2017 (Saturday).

Given the above changes, please be informed that the semester will not be extended. The 1st
semester will end on Saturday, 9 December 2017 as scheduled.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind faculty members of the need to focus on general
learning outcomes as a guide, instead of the extent of topic coverage, in arriving at creative ways of
dealing with course content. While we encourage creative ways of dealing with course content,
we discourage faculty members from holding classes, exams, and other course related activities
outside their class time as well as off campus (e.g. coffee shops, residences, etc.). Online platforms
are highly encouraged alternatives for carrying out course-related engagements.

I trust that in whatever we do, we will be guided by wisdom, compassion, and faithfulness to the mission
in our teaching-learning ministry.

Thank you.
