took place over the past week to eliminate
further barriers.
In the past, Strathmores downtown core
contained five wheelchair stalls and only

Newly formed town council now on the job

In the wake of a notable municipal
election, Strathmores newly elected
town council took the Oath of Office
and got their feet wet at the first organi-
zational meeting on Oct. 25.
Following weeks of campaigning, the
election resulted in four new faces at the
council table, including three women,
bringing the total number of women
councillors to four, a first in Strathmores
history.
Last week, Mayor Pat Fule and Coun-
cillors Bob Sobol, Denise Peterson, Ja-
son Montgomery, Lorraine Bauer, Mela-
nie Corbiell and Tari Cockx participated
in a half-hour long meeting complete
with the Oath of Office, a visit from
Chestermere-Rocky View MLA Leela
Aheer, and discussions on the council
seating arrangement, deputy mayoral
duties and terms, and council meeting
schedule for 2018.
Long before I was elected I really
enjoyed coming out to see mayors and
councils, and municipal politics is the
heartbeat of our communities, said
Aheer. Were so honoured to have these
wonderful people put their names for-
ward as we know in campaigns this is a
hard thing to accomplish.
Im not your MLA yet, theres a
long path before that will happen. The
boundaries commission has potentially
given me the privilege of potentially
running for you in the future. However I
have a feeling, depending on what hap-
pens in the next few days, this could be
a very hot ticket. In the meantime Im
honoured to be here. Congratulations to
this magnificent council.
As family members sat in town cham-
bers championing their relatives, coun-
cil entered into a short discussion on the
deputy mayors schedule and responsi-
bilities. The deputy mayor provides cur-
rent councillors with the opportunity to
take on mayor duties when the mayor is
unavailable. Administration proposed a
division of eight-month terms.
The concern I raised is that the defini-
tion of our deputy mayor was simply to
fill in for the mayor when required, and
quite honestly theres been a lot of dis-
cussion that perhaps the requirements
of the responsibilities being expanded
a little, said returning Councillor Sobol.
The proposal for councils consider-
ation outlines eight-month terms start-
ing in November 2017 and ending in
October 2021. Councillor Peterson
agreed with Councillor Sobol, noting
that additional guidance of the deputy
mayor role would allow for positive
team building and creating a one-on-
one partnership with the mayor. When
Councillor Corbiell questioned the ben-
efit of rotating councillors into the posi-
tion rather than designating one person,
Councillor Peterson provided a two-fold
response.

different level of working in a leader-

Cinderella: A Pantomime

The Strathmore Theatre Players
Guild (STPG) performed a comedic
version of the childhood classic story
Cinderella, as a pantomime.
In the spirit of Halloween, the audi-
ence was scattered with costume-clad
kids who filled the Hope Community
Covenant Church on Oct. 28 to see the
local actors perform.
A pantomime is a traditional English
look at a story, said the plays director
Robert Cole. Its an off-the-wall look at
a traditional story, usually a fairy tale,
and it will normally be done in a come-
dic style.
Humour was a big part; however,
the jokes were only one component
of the show. The production featured
a prompter who held up signs such as
cheer or yes which got the crowd
excited, particularly the younger audi-
ence members.
With bigger audiences it can be
deafening at times once they start to
enjoy it, said Cole.
Not all characters were loved. The
evil stepmother played by Rosebud ac-
tress Diana-Marie Korbisser Stolz was
booed and hissed at every scene she
was involved in which was at least
20 times.
Its been a learning curve for me be-
cause every time I come onto stage I
have to encourage the audience to boo
me and then I have to get back into the
scene said Stolz. The audiences have
been getting better every night, booing
louder and louder.
This was Stolzs second show with
STPG. She learned her craft at the
Rosebud School of the Arts where she
took their four-year program.
According to Cole, the STPG has

Heres a couple of solutions for those of you who
still have problems swallowing pills. Try putting the
tablet or capsule as far back on the tongue as possible
then drink about 4 oz of carbonated water. The
carbonation seems to move the pill to the stomach
faster than plain water. You might also try a spoonful
of yogurt as a way of pushing the pill down the throat.

of the penis in men, it is advised that young men
will benefit from the vaccine. Just a reminder that a
person has to be sexually active to get the virus but
the vaccine does not cause people to become sexually
active. It is good insurance for the future.
When a woman becomes pregnant, there are many
dos and donts and what not to eat and drink and what
medications should not be taken. One of the best
foods to eat at any time is fish but pregnant women
should avoid tuna, particularly, albacore tuna and
swordfish because they contain higher amounts of
mercury. The best fish choices for pregnant women
are sole, flounder and salmon.

Procter said two stalls currently exist in the down-
town vicinity used by the Handibus Association.
While Greene understands a number of the
buildings have existed in the downtown for many
years, he is baffled by the lack of accommodation
for wheelchair accessibility throughout the town.
When you think about it, about half of the
town is not wheelchair accessible anyways, he
said. Its kind of sad, and Im not just speaking
for myself, Im speaking for people who are in
similar situations as myself. Its discrimination. I
feel that people arent thinking about the other
people completely. Theyre looking at the canvas,
not the whole painting.
Greene wheeled himself into five different wheel-
chair-accessible bathrooms at the Strathmore Hos-
pital but with the doors swinging inward, there
wasnt enough room for him to turn the wheel-
chair around and close the doors. While at the
rodeo grounds over the summer, the family was
forced to make their way from the far north end
of the grounds to the Strathmore Family Centre
to find a bathroom, and the double doors swing-
ing inwards at most clinics also pose a challenge.
Then, recently, during an outing to a local restau-
rant across the highway, a large garbage can on
the sidewalk prevented Greene from entering the
establishment, as his chair would have tipped over
trying to bypass the can.
However, in the 10 years the family has resided
in town, his mother Connie has seen significant
changes to sidewalks in the residential areas.
Its an old town, were not stupid to that, but
there could be some changes made, she said. He
tipped over on a corner on Brentwood because
there was such a big dip. There were a couple of
times he almost tipped over. Now its good. Its
good that they have recognized wheelchair acces-
sibility in town and I noticed that a lot of side-
walks are fixed now.
Procter is aware of the lack of planning to ac-
commodate those in wheelchairs and walkers on
previous projects, but was confident projects in
the future will continue to incorporate details to
raise the bar and make Strathmore more wheel-
chair friendly.
I think Strathmore really supports accessibility
as a whole, but were limited to what was done
in the past. And everything that were doing to-
day, were really taking that into account, he said.
Some of the older projects may not be the best
but were going to continue making Strathmore
more accessible as we go. I think were going to
see the evidence with the ramps in the downtown
how serious we are taking the issue with the four
added ramps. The downtown has never been more
accessible for people in a wheelchair.
The Downtown Enhancement Project proved
a major facelift for Strathmores core with an ap-
proved budget of $1.25 million. The upgrades
spanning from 3rd Street to Lakeside Boulevard
included plaza areas at a number of intersections,
planters and greenery, new sidewalks, street fur-
niture and decorative lighting. According to the
town, the furniture and new lighting fixtures will
be installed in the coming weeks. The undertaking
was one of numerous large-scale projects in the
community connected to Canadas celebration of
150 years since Confederation.
The construction also included the installation
of a much-needed storm water drainage pipe that
received $500,000 through the Municipal Sustain-
ability Initiative fund.

Local society seeks help to deal
with feline overpopulation

Strathmores only locally-based animal rescue is
bursting at the seams, alarmed at the conditions
and rate cats are being abandoned, while seeking
greater resources and community involvement.
Since the Happy Cat Sanctuary (HCS) was estab-
lished in 2003, the rate of feral and stray cats has
outnumbered the pets being surrendered.
The society took action and managed to trap,
neuter and release roughly 30 cats in the down-
town to help combat the overpopulation situation.
Recently, the situation has supplanted, as a 30 per
cent increase in cats being surrendered now has
society members and volunteers concerned, where
conditions of severe distress and malnourishment
are raising red flags over recent months.
With a total of 35 sanctuary cats that are un-
adoptable, and anywhere from 30 to 50 cats in
need of homes, the founders, volunteers and fos-
ter homes have reached capacity, resulting in the
placement rejection of over 30 cats and kittens
since Oct. 1 of this year.
We are growing and there doesnt seem to be
anything thats growing with the animal control,
and we are doing as much as we can, said Mi-
chelle Shave, co-founder of HCS who literally has a
cat living in every room of her house and a facility
housing another 30 cats on her private property.
Its a constant rotation of cats coming and go-
ing. We dont have unlimited resources. We dont
have enough time and were not able to do it all
ourselves. So I think the town needs to step up
and look at what weve started and maybe assist in
helping it grow.

Chinook Financial raises funds for fire victims

Chinook Financials local branch is partnering
with various community groups in three provin-
cial communities to collect money for victims of
the recent wildfires in southern Alberta.
The financial institution a division of Con-
nect First Credit Union set up crisis intervention
funds for residents of Wheatland County, Empress
and Hilda who lost their homes, livestock or farm
land in the blazes.
While donations can be made at any of their 27
branches in 14 communities, Chinook Financial
also committed to matching funds to a maximum
of $5,000.
To date, $900 have been received from the pub-
lic in donations, with just $100 of those funds di-
rected to the Wheatland Fire Relief Fund.
Weve grown up as a local credit union in
southern Alberta and at moments like this they
dont just affect our members, they affect our
employees, they affect our communities that we
live, work and love to be in, said Megan Doug-
las, brand and communications manager with Chi-
nook Financial.
Its our first and foremost duty that our mem-
bers are OK when moments like this hit. Were
also working proactively with any members who
have been personally impacted by the fires to en-
sure that theyve got some relief set up to make
sure theyre able to get through this challenging
time.

year, the society has also taken in over 75 kittens.

help us. Number one to spot the wild cat, and

of us to trap. To try to get the cat trapped before
she has kittens or get her trapped and trap the kit-
tens at six weeks or we cant tame them.
Over the years, the society has branched out into
Wheatland County, specifically Gleichen, Carse-
land and Hussar, and has received much-needed
support and care from Falconridge Animal Hos-
pital, Sevick Veterinary Services, the Animal Care
Centre of Strathmore and Strathmore Veterinary
Clinic, which all worked together to provide strays
with free examinations and medicine. However,
some folks wonder whether Strathmore and sur-
rounding areas need a humane society.
Before Happy Cat Sanctuary set themselves
up, we used to be inundated with cats. Since they
started, the number of cats being turned into the
vet clinics has drastically dropped, said local vet-
erinarian Karen Sevick.

On Oct. 17, the Wheatland County communities
of Carseland and Gleichen experienced rapidly
moving wildfires fueled by extremely high winds.
The regions were among 10 communities that
faced evacuations in six counties and municipal
districts.
It took the efforts of farmers, volunteers, public
works members and 130 firefighters from Wheat-
land County, Siksika, the County of Newell, the
County of Rocky View and Strathmore to battle
the inferno, protect property, set up reception
centres and aid in the evacuation of nearly 2,000
residents.
With the loss of livestock, the devastation of
a couple of farms and land, as well as missing
pets, the financial establishment stepped up to the
plate.
Agriculture is the heartbeat of rural Alberta,
and I love how Albertans always come together
to support each other in times of need, said Scot
Hadden, president of Chinook Financial. This is

I think (HCS) has done a wonderful job
bringing awareness to the community and
helping pets, and I think itll be a question of
are we actually at the point of possibly consid-
ering a humane society. That I dont know, but
it would be an interesting endeavour to inves-
tigate.
Besides the need for more foster homes, Ste-
fanich and Shave also want to see the creation
of a humane society within the town limits.
Yet the Calgary Humane Society is also
struggling at capacity with cats, dogs
and rabbits. According to Calgary Hu-
mane Society Communications Manag-
er Sage Pullen McIntosh, last year they
dealt with 5,379 animals.
While expensive veterinary bills, eco-
nomic hardship and landlords unwill-
ing to allow animals may contribute
to the problem, those dealing with the
animals ask pet owners to not expect a
tamed pet to fend for itself. The Calgary
Humane Society will accept any stray
animal for free.
When we started, a lot of the cats
that we were helping were wild out-
side strays. The cats were taking in
now you can tell that they belonged to
somebody at some point and they did
not fare well outside; theyre coming in
in bad conditions, said Shave. All the
little communities in Wheatland County
are having just as much trouble with
cats as Strathmore is, and we cant do
it all.
Residents are asked to contact the
Town of Strathmore regarding any
trapped strays to ensure the cat isnt
being missed by a pet owner before be-
ing placed elsewhere.
The Happy Cat Sanctuary is run com-
pletely by volunteers and relies on
monetary donations to cover the cost
of food and veterinary bills. Donations
can be made at the Red Carrot in down-
town Strathmore.
Some of the societys cats are on dis-
play at PetSmart in Sunridge and Pet-
Valu in Strathmore. To report a stray,
contact a bylaw officer at the Town of
Strathmore at 403-934-3133.

Valley Medical Clinic welcomes doctors

It didnt take long for United King-
dom family physician Alan Young to
grow tired of his countrys restrictive
politics, and time spent focusing on tar-
gets and paperwork rather than with
his patients.
After all, the skills he obtained while
studying medicine at the University of
Nottingham and working in Yorkshire
where he also worked as a physician for
a professional rugby league team on the
side were better put to use one-on-
one with members of the community.
So, five-and-a-half years ago, that was
the deciding factor for the now 40-year-
old to uproot to Canada.
Two weeks ago, Young started his
practice at the Valley Medical Clinic
the same clinic where his wife Keely
Abercrombie has taken a position, to
start in August 2018 following the end
of her maternity leave and completion
of the remainder of her residency.
What attracted me to Canada was the
opportunity to do more things, to do
all those things were trained for and
not just sit behind a desk dealing with
coughs, blood pressure and diabetes,
but also being able to vary it: going to
nursing homes, going to emergency,
dealing with palliative, the whole care,
said Young.
Strathmore just seemed to tick a lot
more boxes than other places and it
just felt good straight away. I like the
whole care the whole spectrum of
birth through to death. I think the key
is how long people stay here, not just
the medical physicians in the clinic
which speaks volumes but people
stay here and tend to be here for a long
time which is what we want.
The father of six-month-old daughter
Grace, grew up in Portsmouth, in the
south of England, where he became in-
terested in the inner working of the hu-
man body at the age of 15. With a knack
for science, Young enrolled in medicine
to help people understand diseases and
how to treat them.
Although he started out with an inter-
est in sports medicine, he quickly tran-
sitioned into family medicine, although
hes treated many muscular skeletal is-
sues since working in Canada.
When a job opportunity opened up in
Drayton Valley, Young didnt hesitate to
apply for the position, asking his rela-
tives in Edmonton to scout out the loca-
tion. While he had completed an eight-
week elective course in Penticton, B.C.
in the past, Young was already fond of
Canadian medical practices, and being
near the Rocky Mountains added to his

than a month ago with his
wife and infant daughter.

other doctors already at the
clinic, and next August Aber-
crombie will be joining the
team to become the third fe-
male physician. Although she
had to postpone part of her
residency in Red Deer when
she went on maternity leave,
she plans on completing her
residency once her leave
ends in April.

If the Strathmore Wheatland Kings
keep this pace up, there will be no more
hats left in town.
Zach Meadows was the latest veteran
to complete an unprecedented four-
game hat trick streak, when the Kings
pounded the Ponoka Stampeders 7-2
Oct. 28 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Never in the Kings recorded history
have there been four-straight Heritage
Junior Hockey League games with hat
tricks recorded by different players each
night.

20 in a 7-5 loss to the Okotoks Bisons
(8-3-0). A rare midweek game saw Jaks
Faris net his first hatty as a King Oct. 25
in an 8-3 rout of the Three Hills Thrash-
ers (0-8-0). On Oct. 27, Matt Thomsons
goal with 35 seconds remaining in over-
time pushed the Kings past the 2-7-2
Stettler Lightning 8-7 in overtime.

against the Stampeders (1-8-1), Mead-
ows streaked down the left wing and

on fire right now, having scored 23 goals
in the three latest victories.

thing to do with it. I dont want to take
anything away from the other team, but
we have played the three last-placed
teams from the Northern division, said
Stoodley. I thought Ponoka played well
tonight, but they only had two lines and
our full lineup piled on them at the end.
Then in Three Hills, I thought it was
tight to the end, then we pulled away
and against Stettler we let too many
goals in; we shouldnt have given up
that extra point.

tricks. Our line has been together
for a couple years now and we are
playing really well and keeping it
simple. The other night, the puck
just happened to be on my stick at
the right time, but its great to see

SCFA Badgers headed back
to CPWFL title game

The league final rematch didnt end
in a thrilling fashion, but the result was
still the same, as the Strathmore Com-
munity Football Association Badgers
advanced to their second straight Cen-
tral Peewee Football League champion-
ship.
The Badgers needed an overtime
rushing touchdown to eclipse the
Red Deer Hornets last year. This year,
overtime wasnt needed: Brady Johan-
sen led the Badgers with three touch-
downs, as his team downed the Hor-
nets 21-12 Oct. 28 at an unseasonably
warm Crowther Memorial Junior High
School field.
Johansen has been the most impact-
ful Badger on both sides of the ball this
season.
Against the Hornets, he lined up un-
der centre in the red zone and torched
them with his legs once he slid out into
the flats.
After the Badgers defensive unit
forced the Hornets to punt from their
own end zone towards the end of first
quarter, a five-yard net punt set up Jo-
hansens first touchdown, as he bolted
to the right for the untouched score.
He had some great runs for us to-
day, said Badgers Head Coach Doug
Thiessen.
Johansen was just getting started.
After carrying the ball down to the
five-yard line, his offensive line was
kind enough to back them up 10 yards
with a false start, providing more yard-
ages for him.
Rolling out right, he looked to throw,
but saw nobody open, so he tucked the
football, put his head down and bar-
reled into the end zone.
Following a similar theme in the
fourth quarter, Johansen rolled out to
the right and burned past a secondary
unit that stood a head shorter than him.
They simply couldnt keep up.
Johansen wasnt the only story line
that afternoon. Thiessens teams have
always been among the leagues best in
run prevention.
The defence set up the first score and
was responsible for Johansens third
score, when Jordan Southern punched
the ball free from Hornets leading back
Ryan Raymont and was covered up by
Adam Greenhill with eight minutes re-
maining in regulation.
The Hornets didnt go into the night
easily as they drove down the field, as
Raymont notched his second touch-
down of the game with 1:22 remaining,
cutting the lead to 21-12. Needing to re-
cover the onside kick, the ball glanced
off a Badger player and was recovered
by Kade McGowan.
The Hornets were threatening with
time as their biggest enemy, when
Southern powered through the offen-
sive line, plastering Raymont into the
turf in the backfield, all but ending the
game.
The league semis were anything but
a blowout, as the Badgers only held a
7-6 lead at half time.
It wasnt all glorious for Johansen,
who fumbled the ball on his own nine-
yard line. Lucky for him, his defence
plugged up the middle of the field,
neutralizing Raymont, who had been
gutting the Badgers at times between
the hash marks.
We are a defence-first team. We are
a lot looser with our plays on offence
than we are with our defence, said
Thiessen. We knew it was going to be

the Hopp regime, the Badgers scraped
by the Ponoka Broncs 9-8 Oct. 28 in
Ponoka.
In an odd way to reach nine points,
the Badgers punted three balls through
the Broncs end zone for rouges.
Then in the third, Riley Heysa took
a handoff 25 yards to the house, put-
ting the Badgers up 9-0 after a missed
point-after attempt.
We only had about 20 players for
this game and a lot of our guys were
playing on both sides of the ball, so
they got pretty gassed by the end, said
Hopp. Im proud of the way they hung
in there and battled to the end.
Lucky for the Badgers, the missed
conversion didnt come back to bite
them after the Broncs marched down
the field in the fourth for a score.
With only 1:16 remaining in regula-
tion, the Broncs attempted an on-side
kick. The kick failed to go the required
10 yards, so possession turned over to
the Badgers, who ran out the clock.
The big win means the Badgers
squeeze one more game out of their
season, as they will meet the Rocky
Mountain House Rebels Nov. 4 in Rocky
Mountain House.

Former Bisons producing in Okotoks

The CFR Chemicals Bisons might be
gone, but their former players are still
producing at a high level at their new
home rink.
Fourteen players were either affili-
ated with the Bisons last year, were a
mainstay in the Chrysler division cham-
pionship lineup, or are local Wheatland
products and have found their way
onto the expansion Okotoks Bow Mark
Oilers roster this season.
After Okotoks filed paperwork to es-
tablish a new draw zone under Hockey
Alberta in the Alberta Midget Hockey
League, Airdrie elected to bring the
Bisons back, despite never hosting a
Bisons game, just to own the carded
rights to the franchise.
The split in the draw zones saw play-
ers from Wheatland County move to
Okotoks, while some of last years Bi-
sons from other areas headed north-
west to play for the Airdrie CFR Chemi-
cals Bisons.
Trading in the red, white and black
for the green, black and white was an
easy transition for 13 of the 14 former
players affiliated with the Strathmore
franchise, seeing as they have either
spent time in Okotoks playing for the
Rocky Mountain Raiders of the Alber-
ta Major Bantam Hockey League, the
Okotoks Oilers AA franchise or were
originally from the Okotoks area.
Still, its a big change for the kids who
grew up in Strathmore, or were billeted
and attending schools in Strathmore.

the Lethbridge Midget AAA Hurricanes
at the Pason Centennial Arena.
I was pretty excited to be named cap-
tain. It was something I was hoping for,
so I could share my experiences with
the team. Im glad I was chosen. Im
looking forward to help point this team
in the right direction and its a nice feel-
ing knowing that the guys think that
highly of you, said Krahenbil.
After 10 games into the season, Kra-
henbil sits tied for third on the team
with eight points.
Joel was one of the guys in the lock-
er room the other guys looked up to.
He had played with some of them pre-
viously, and when you talk to him, he
is mature and a perfect fit to wear our
C, said Oilers Head Coach Kevin Wil-
lison, who spent the past five seasons
coaching the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of
the B.C. Hockey League. He leads the
way on and off the ice, and is one of
our hardest workers.
Still living in Strathmore, Krahen-
bil makes the 40-minute drive into
Okotoks each morning with the other
local products, taking turns with driv-
ing duties throughout the week.
Alongside Krahenbil, Kootenay ICE
prospect Tyler Strath and Saskatoon
Blades netminding prospect Hunter
Young are the two regulars from last
seasons lineup who have made the
move to Okotoks.
Having played with some of the guys
and knowing a bunch of them helped

Peewee Braves rolling early in the season

Keith Klemmensen appears to be tak-
ing after head coach of the New Eng-
land Patriots, Bill Belichick.
In 2007, the Patriots were crushing
teams on their way to a perfect 16-0
regular season. Things were going great
and the Pats were putting up record
numbers, but Belichick kept bringing
up things his team needed to improve
on he kept serving them humble pie.
Currently in their best five-game
stretch over the past two years, Klem-
mensen is pleased, but knows there is
still a long way to go, even after the
Wheatland Braves just dismantled the
1-9-0 Taber Golden Suns 8-2 Oct. 29 at
the Strathmore Family Centre.
Theyre starting to figure out what
playing as a team is like and that it will
garner better results than doing things
on their own, said Braves Head Coach
Klemmensen. We arent out of the
woods by any stretch, but today they
showed signs of knowing what it takes
to play 60 minutes.
Leading the way for the rolling Braves
(7-3-0) was Conner Radke with two
goals and one helper, along with Wy-
att Yule, who recorded one snipe and
two assists. Adam Moore, Garrin Gos-
ling and Jace Koole all supplied one
goal and one assist. Tyler Fairbairn and
Luc Trevors picked up the other mark-
ers for the Braves, while Connor White
made 18 saves between the pipes.
The current hot spell has impressed
Klemmensen slightly, but he wont be
fooled by any five-game stretch.
Theyve gravitated towards our
system quicker than we thought they
would, but there is still so far to go,
said Klemmensen. At the end of the
day, and no disrespect to anyone, we
havent beaten anyone above us in the
standings yet.
Thats because winning four of their
last five has propelled them to third
in the division, behind the Lethbridge
Hurricanes and Medicine Hat Hounds.
They are 0-1 against the Hurricanes
this season and have only played teams
below them in the standings. For the
most part, they are taking care of busi-
ness and beating the teams they need
to beat.
Such was the case Oct. 28 at Blackie
Arena, when the local double-A pee-
wee team escaped with a 5-4 win over
the Foothills Bisons (2-7-1).
The Braves built up a 5-1 lead after
two periods on two goals from Kuryk,
with, Colton Gabe, Goll and Radke add-
ing singles.
We played 40 minutes and were
lucky enough to hang onto the win
against Foothills. Its those kinds of
games that show us there is still work
to be done, said Klemmensen, who
stood and watched the Bisons storm
back with three goals in the third pe-
riod.
The Braves will look to continue their
growth Nov. 3 (7:30 p.m.) when they
take on the Airdrie Lightning White (3-
2-2) in their first South Central Hockey
League game at Hussar Arena. They
wrap up weekend play against the No.
3 seed from the North division Nov. 5,
when they take on the Okotoks Oilers
Black (5-4-1) at Murray Arena.
WARRIORS PLAYING WITH THE
HOUNDS
The Wheatland Warriors have deeply
enjoyed their time against the Medicine
Hat Hounds this season.
In their second meeting of the sea-
son, the Warriors trounced the Hounds

6-2 on Oct. 27 at the Moose Recreation
Centre. It marked the second time this
season the Warriors beat up on the
Hounds; they previously hammered
the 3-7-1 Hounds 7-4 at home back on
Oct. 8.
In the rematch, the local double-A
bantam team (4-7-1) put five goals over
the first two periods before the Hounds
showed signs of life.
Jerrin Hendricks netted a pair of
snipes alongside Brayden Ledrew. Ray
Warrack opened the scoring on a solo

Spartans preparing for host tourney

With the South Central Zone champi-
onships nearing, the Strathmore High
School Spartan volleyball teams are
rounding into shape.
Participating in the Kodiak Classic
tournament in Airdrie last weekend, the
senior boys Spartans walked away with
the silver medal.
In a thrilling final, the Spartans fell
to the George McDougall High School
Mustangs in three sets, 2-1 Oct. 28.
We played really well this weekend,
said Spartans Head Coach Cole Hintz.
In the final, there were a couple of
points that didnt go our way that could
have easily went our way, but these
things happen. I was happy with the
results this weekend.
In the semis, the Spartans swept the
Springbank Community High School
Phoenix 2-0, following their 2-1 quar-
terfinal victory over the Bishop Carroll
High School Cardinals.
Before the weekend, we talked as a
team about where we have come as a
team. We were accelerated to start the
season and had to learn how to play as
a team. Over the past few weekends,
we have learned how to compete bet-
ter. Now, we are getting to the point
where we are learning how to win, and
thats a big step, said Hintz. Its a big
difference from being competitive and

represent Canada at the 2018 Olympic
Winter Games in PyeongChang, South
Korea.
Hockey Canada unveiled their
26-player roster Oct. 26 for the Karjala
Cup, which takes place Nov. 8-12 in
Helsinki, Finland and Biel, Switzerland.
Cochranes Mason Raymond was one
of those 26 players named to the team;
he wore the Bison colours in 2002-
2003.
Raymond has represented Canada in
the past when he participated in the
Spengler Cup in 2016, when Canada
captured the gold in a 5-2 win over
HC Lugano on New Years Eve. In five
games, he scored three goals and fin-
ished with six points.
In his one year spent in Strathmore,
Raymond buried 14 goals and 40 points
in 33 games. In the playoffs, he scored
11 goals and 20 points in nine games.
Of course, this is big news for the for-
mer Bison, as there will be no current
NHL players allowed to participate in
the Olympics. It is the first time since
the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer,
Norway, that there will be no NHL tal-

Spartans tied the Mustangs 1-1 and
swept the Father Lacombe High School
Laser Nation 2-0.
Of course, this is all building to-
wards the Alberta Schools Athletic As-
sociation provincials, which will take
place in Strathmore Nov. 23-25. For the
Spartans, they will take place in the
provincial tournament after narrowly
missing out last year. The schools best
finish came three years ago, when they
placed third.
But before then, the Spartans will
host their annual tournament Nov. 3
and 4 at the High School Gym.
On the girls side, the Spartans also
turned in a productive and exhaust-
ing weekend in Sylvan Lake, the site of
their provincial tournament.
In a day that began at 8:30 a.m., the
Spartans left the court at 8:30 p.m., fol-
lowing their semifinal loss to the Rim-
bey High School Spartans 2-0 (21-25,
19-25).
We fought hard, it was a long day
and it was very encouraging to see girls
come off the bench and step up, said
Spartans Head Coach Randy Moncks.
We battled and made it into the play-
offs in a very good 3A tournament.
Strathmore was forced into a one-
ent.

ment as a way to prepare themselves
for the Olympic Games. This marks the
first year Canada will compete at the
Karjala Cup. Historically a European
tournament, the United States have only
entered the tournament once and cap-
tured bronze in 1992. Russia has won
the most medals in the tournaments
22-year history with 20 medals (eight
gold, five silver and eight bronze). Fin-
land has a slight edge in most gold
medals with 11.
Raymond isnt too far removed from
life in the NHL. Last season, he ap-
peared in four games with the Anaheim
Ducks after spending parts of two sea-
sons with the Calgary Flames.
In 546 career NHL games, mostly
spent with the Vancouver Canucks, Cal-
gary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs,
Raymond scored 115 goals, recorded
115 assists and 251 points, to go with
a minus-2 rating. In 63 playoff games,
he registered eight goals, 20 assists and
a minus-8.
These days, Raymond suits up for the
Schlittschuh Club Bern of the Nation-
al League the top tier of the Swiss
hockey league system. They are located

their Catholic counterparts 2-1 (24-26,
25-21, 15-11).

that one player who we can ride and

the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft and was
named to Team Canada Red alongside
six other WHL players, including the
third-overall pick from the same draft,
in defenceman Bowen Byram.
Last year was Krebs only full season
with the Herd. In 29 Alberta Midget
Hockey League games, he racked up
15 goals and 40 points, as the Bisons
reached Game 4 of the AMHL final. He
also won the Top Forward award.
This year, in 15 games with the Koo-
tenay ICE, he has three goals and 13
points.

SWAN, Eileen Ella

October 26, 2017
Eileen Swan passed away suddenly
on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at the
age of 65 years due to complications brought on by
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She
will be dearly missed by her four children Dinsmore
Swan (Allyson) of Strathmore, AB, Alberta Sierm-
achesky (Keith) of Melfort, SK, Dallas Swan (Elizah)
of Roma, Australia and Donella Swan of Calgary;
seven grandchildren Tygan, Delaney, Caitlin, Devon,
Ashya, Kahly and Kateryna; two great-grandchildren
Vanessa and Macy; a brother Neil Roszell (June) of
Vernon, BC; and sister Leona Kinequon (Gary) of Re-
gina, SK; and many other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Don
Swan; grandson Luke Siermachesky; her parents
Percy and Winnifred Roszell; in-laws Ron and Ruth
Swan; brothers Melvin Roszell, Denzil Roszell and
Wendell Roszell; sisters in law Kathy Swan and
Margy Schetterer and brother-in-law John Swan.
Eileen was born in Lestock, SK. She was raised on
a farm near Punnichy, SK. She began her education
at the Perryville schoolhouse and graduated high
school in Punnichy. Following high school, Eileen
moved to Watrous, SK for a period of time to live
with her brother Wendell and his wife Sherry. It was
there where she met her husband Don, and they
moved to Calgary, AB to begin their life together.
They later moved south of Strathmore, AB to con-
tinue farming and raising their family.
For over 40 years, Eileen worked for Alberta Health
Services. She was an active member of the commu-
nity and the Bow River Alliance Church congregation
in Carseland, AB. Her smile, gentle words of wisdom
and kindness towards others will be dearly missed.
A Funeral Service will be held for Eileen at the
Carseland Community Hall (330 Railway Ave, Carse-
land, AB) on Wednesday, November 1 at 11:00 a.m.
If friends desire, memorial donations may be made
to the Bow River Alliance Church, and in following
Eileens example may you consider your journey of
faith, whatever that may look like.
