EXAM II
OCTOBER 16, 2001

Name: Student ID No.:

I. (10 pts.) Match the following terms and definitions.

1. _______ Precipitate formation in which a few atoms or molecules come together to form
a stable solid.

2. _______ Process by which a coagulated colloid reverts to its original dispersed state.

3. _______ A proton donor.

4. ________ (Q S) / S

5. ________ Measure of the effectiveness with which a species influences an equilibrium.

A. Activity Coefficient
B. Bronsted Acid
C. Conjugate acid
D. Digestion
E. Ionic Strength
F. Nucleation
G. Occlusion
H. Particle Growth
I. Peptization
J. Supersaturation

II. Consider the following set of replicate measurements:

0.624, 0.613, 0.596, 0.607, 0.582

1. (5 pts) Is the 0.582 value an outlier at the 99% confidence level?

III. A plot of the following data yields a straight line.

SO4 Concentration Turbidimeter Reading

mg/L
0.00 0.06
5.00 1.48
10.00 2.28
15.00 3.98
20.0 4.61

Using least squares analysis calculate:

1. (5 pts) The slope of the line

2. (5 pts) The standard deviation about the regression.

3. (5 pts) The equation for the least squares line.

4. (5 pts) For a turbidimeter reading of 0.5 calculate the SO4 concentration.

IV. (10 pts) A 0.1799g sample of an organic compound was burned in a stream of
oxygen and the CO2 produced was collected in a solution of barium hydroxide.
Calculate the percentage of carbon in the sample if 0.5613 g BaCO3 (MW = 197.34
g/mol) was formed.

V. (9 pts) In class we discussed five ways to deal with a data point suspected to be an
outlier. List THREE of the five ways to deal with outliers.

VI. (7 pts) Calculate the solubility product constant for CuSeO3 given that the molar
concentration of the saturated solution is 1.42 X 10-4 M?
VII. (10 pts) What are the molar H3O+ and OH- concentrations in 0.0800 M butanoic acid
(CH3CH2CH2COOH) (Ka = 1.52 X 10-5)?

VIII. (5 pts) Explain why the solubility of a salt is increased in an electrolyte solution.
(Consider the solubility of BaSO4 in a solution of NaCl compared to BaSO4 in water).

IX. (9 pts) List THREE ways to minimize supersaturation of a solution and how each
minimizes supersaturation.
X. (15 pts). Calculate the solubility of BaSO4 in a 0.0167 M solution of Ba(NO3)2 using 1.
Activities; and 2. Molar concentrations. Ksp BaSO4 = 1.1 X 10-10. The effective
diameters are 0.5 nm for Ba2+ and 0.4 nm for SO42-.
