NOTE: In the solutions, state explicitly every assumption and/or approximation made, explain every
procedure and justify their use. Dimensional analyses are absolutely necessary. All results must be
expressed in appropriate units. Provide comments on you results: good, bad, questionable, etc. PLEASE,
SHOW ALL WORK, while writing your results on one side of a sheet of paper. Start each problem on a
new sheet. Print your name in the upper right corner of this page where indicated. Also, print your name
and problem number in the upper right corner of every page of your solutions. Staple this problem
statement sheet to your solutions.

PROBLEM 1. A 5 cm diameter cylinder is maintained at a constant temperature of 200C and it is

completely enclosed by a wind tunnel test chamber, walls of which are at 10C. Air at 350K is forced
across the cylinder at a velocity of 50 m/s (see Table 1-3 for pertinent characteristics). If the surface
emissivity of the cylinder is 0.7, determine total (i.e., convective and radiative) heat transfer from the
cylinder. Comment on your results. Your solution must include a sketch of the system you are
analyzing indicating all dimensions and boundary conditions.

PROBLEM 2. A building wall consists of a 6 in. of concrete (kc = 0.7 BTU/hr-ft-F), 2 in. of fiber
insulating board, and 3/8 in. of gypsum board (kg = 0.03 BTU/hr-ft-F). The inside and outside heat
transfer coefficients are 2 BTU/hr-ft2-F and 7 BTU/hr-ft2-F, respectively. The inside temperature is
72F, and the outside temperature is 20F. Determine the overall heat transfer coefficient for this wall, the
R-value, and the heat loss per unit area. Your solution must include a sketch showing all dimensions and
boundary conditions, and an electrical network representation of the system you are analyzing.

PROBLEM 3. Current is passed through a cylindrical laboratory heater, which has a 3 cm diameter,
generating heat at the rate of 20 MW/m3. The heater is exposed to a convection environment at 25C
where the convection heat transfer coefficient is 0.5 kW/m2C. Sketch the heater, indicating all
dimensions and boundary conditions, and determine its surface temperature.

PROBLEM 4. A straight rectangular fin has a length of 3.5 cm, a thickness of 1.5 mm, and is made of a
material characterized by thermal conductivity of 255 W/m-C. The fin is exposed to a convection
environment at 20C and h = 1.5 kW/m2-C. Determine the maximum possible heat transfer from this fin
for the base temperature of 150C. What is the actual heat transfer from this fin? What is its thermal
efficiency?
