CLEVELAND FILM HIGH SCHOOL

There are 2 types of traditional art, spatial and time and film is a
combination of the two. In my design, I am using film as a form
of project based learning to facilitate learning of other subjects
allowing students to take what they learnt from their time in
school and translate that into a medium that will allow it to be
presented and showcased. Film and digital media is relevant in
todays contemporary world and the industry will continue to
grow. Film is very inclusive, allows for a whole variety of different
subjects to come together.

I wanted my architecture to encompass the film. I wanted to


design a building that would allow students many different types
of opportunities to create scenes and emotional effects through
architecture. In my space, I have three new buildings which all
serve specific programs the centre which I named long building
encompasses those ideas, whilst the 2 other buildings I call
boxes is designed to be simple boxes that is supposed to blend
in with the existing heritage buildings in terms of grid line.

4 elements are taken from filming process: sequence as


circulation, frame as rooms, filters as how I control the light, and
all the people in the school are actors

or sequence, I separate building as two parts, the bright and the


dark, its a metaphoric represent of film sense, in film, there are
always heroes and villains, positive emotion and negative
emotions, they are cross over to create conflicts and whole new
emotions, so they are not standing alone, by put into the building,
especially in level 3, I create tunnels pointing at where the lights
coming in, so people from the dark circulation heading to bright
circulation is going to have a feeling to get rid of all the negative
feeling they experience in dark side, and boost the feeling of
hope somehow. Imaging you stay in the dark space but you see
a light come to the end of the tunnel, you will have a strong
feeling of hope. I put two staircases on each bright and dark side
towards the two main entrances on the site.

Frame is actual rooms, its like montage in film making, I provide


varies room form to provide the different spaces condition in the
building, and students can utilize them to organize each picture
frame, I have zoom out room, I have zoom in room, I have long
corridors, I have different viewpoints towards different landscape,
and the building zigzag is to get all the views intentionally, I have
different type and size of staircase, I have giant atrium and
different height of rooms, so students can choose which spaces
they want to sever the story.

Filters is to manipulating lights, the key spaces are on level 3 and


4 and level 2, the students on the level 4 can use solid panel to
hide the skylight, to create a certain light access in order to
generate different light condition and emotions. The corridor
framed by different type of pillars, to create shadow, this is
inspired by the film of HICHUKIRK, the master of thriller movies,
he used a lot of corridor to show the horror and suspense
feelings.

Actors, who use the building are actor, the key space is atrium,
people in atrium will have a clear view of acting studio and
self-study room, and all the action in these rooms will be framed
by windows and can be seen by the people in atrium, its like the
people are actual in the screen. Also, the people from tall building
can also look through these skylights, all the tables going to be
settled under the spot, all the actions will be captured, and
suddenly, they become to the actors on the screen.

I have totally 35 rooms to mainly serve the year 11 & 12 students


based on my pedagogy principle, you can have a look of the
subjects list of each year, year 11 & 12 have mainly focus on the
film making class. Year 7 10 is going to mainly stay in box
building and heritage buildings, because they have more
mandatory subjects to study, so, I need to provide more tactical
rooms to serve them. Then the building here is a support building,
have library, computer labs, sound production rooms, labs, etc.
Designed for a collaboration between
WATER SQUARE Sydney Waters and The City of Sydney
on the George Street Cinema site; our
design is a Water Museum that teaches
PUBLIC: 250 SCHOOL STUDENTS & 500 PUBLIC VISITORS people of the importance of purification
SYDNEY WATER: 25 RESEARCH ERS & 50 ADMI NISTRATORS and preservation of the worlds most

The building is designed to function as


a large water purification plant that will
recycle as much water as possible
DISASTER HQ within its surrounding areas to ensure
that there will always be safe clean
drinking water. In a state of emergency,
the building will be converted to a
PUBLIC: 1000 VICTI MS, 200 RESCUE TEAM
Headquarter space where the City of

Sydney Council will take over to

maintain control and surveillance of the
situation.
