Calculating the pressure tank size

Pressure tank size formula is given as follows :

Drawdown volume
cut-out pressure - cut-in pressure
size = ( cut-out pressure + 1 )

Drawdown is based on pump capacity and the number of start/stops per hour and amount of water
which can be taken from the tank before the pump starts.

250 x Q
Drawdown in liters = I

250 x Q x (cut-out pressure + 1)

Tank size in liters = ( I x ( cut-out pressure - cut-in pressure )
)

Where : Q is the average pump flow in m3/h

I is the number of starts/stops per hour.
cut in & cut out : pressure is indicated in bars.

Data : Pump type & model : GRUNDFOS MODEL : CR 16 -30

Motor power rating P= 5.5 kw
Number of starts/stops I = 50 1/h ( from pump manufacturer )
Average pump flow Q= 16 m /h
3

cut in pressure = 3.5 bar

cut out pressure = 4.5 bar

250 x 16 x ( 4.5 + 1 )
Tank size in liters = ( 50 x ( 4.5 - 3.5 ) ) = 440 liters

The available standard size is : 500 liters

Recommended tank size is : liters

Note :
The standard sizes of pressure tanks are : 25; 60; 100; 200; 300; 500; 750; 1000 and 2000 liters.
