SEASON PREVIEW
2017-2018
After a (20-7) campaign and a first place finish in the region (lost tie breaker seeded 2nd
in play-os), the Cardinals are looking to sweep the region and win the schools twelfth region
championship. Last year the Cardinals were a really young and inexperienced team. This year
they return five starters, two All State players, a lot more experience and a lot of depth.
Finishing tied for first place in the region and then losing the tie breaker to drop to second
place, fueled an intense o-season. That fuel lite a fire for this years team to want to work hard
to become CHAMPIONS. The Cardinals had a successful o-season with amazing
participation from all the players. The team attended several camps this summer, spent
countless hours in the weight room, and have really worked daily on skill development to help
give them the best chance to secure the trophy. The time has now come to take it to the
hardwood and prove they are a championship team.
Foster Bridges (65, Senior) shooting guard returns after an All State performance his
Junior season. Bridges averaged 17.2 Points and 7.1 Rebounds per game. Foster was named
Co-Region Player of the Year and made the All Region team for a third consecutive season.
Bridges was also voted HSSR All State and second team Herald Journal All Area. Bridges has
worked daily on improving his ball handling and mid-range game. He is a consistent scorer
from anywhere on the floor. Standing at 65, Foster creates many mismatches for his
opponents. Foster will enter the season with 1,255 career points (3rd in school history), just
507 points shy of the schools all time leading scorer Richard Vernon (1994-1998).
Also returning for the Cardinals will be All State guard Trey Smith (511, Junior). Smith
is coming o his best season as a Cardinal where he averaged 25.9 points, 4.7 assist, 4.3
rebounds and 3.0 steals. Smith also lead the team in 3FG made (69) and shot 83% from the
Free Throw line. Smith was All Region for the second year in a rowCo-Region Player of the
Year. HSSR All State and Spartanburg Herald Journal All Area 1st team. Trey is a smart player
who can score from anywhere on the court. He finishes at the rim, has a deadly mid-range
game and can absolutely light it up from three point range. Smith has scored 1,304 career
points (2nd in school history) and also like Bridges is looking to catch the schools all time
points leader.
Manny Gonzalez (64, Senior) returns after a very successful first year on the varsity
team last season. Gonzalez averaged 9.8 points and grabbed a team high 9.4 rebounds per
game last season for the Cardinals. Gonzalez has worked on improving his athleticism and is
ready for a huge senior year. Manny has also improved his outside shooting this o season
and will look to stretch the defense from the power forward position.
Turner Ussery (510, Sophomore) point guard will look to build on a outstanding
freshman year where he earned All Region honors. Ussery a true pass first point guard
averaged 10.1 Points, 4.4 Assist, and 5.3 rebounds per game. Ussery also scored a career
high 36 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and 9 assist vs Jackson County (Ky.) last season. The
now more stronger Sophomore will look to mature on and o the court and help lead this team.
Easton Jenkins (66, Senior) is the 5th returning starter from last years team. Jenkins is
a shot altering defender who also draws charges for the Cardinals defense. Jenkins is
aggressive on the boards and is a big part to the success of this years team.
The top newcomer guards will be asked to contribute right away. Jadon Lane (60,
Junior) shooting guard is a knock down three point specialist. Lane is a quick defender with a
very high motor. His ability to knock down the open three ball will keep the opponents honest
on defense. Kolbe Pruitt (61, Junior) is a top newcomer with a very high motor. Pruitts eort
and rebounding ability will help give the team extra possessions and eliminate opportunities for
the opponents. Connor Harmon (60, Junior) is another player who flat out gets after it and
somehow finds a way to get his hands on the loose balls. Connor will look to provide a spark
to the team every time he enters the game. Michael Clark (510 Junior) is also a player who will
give 100% all the time. Clark communicates great on the floor and his willingness to
communicate out loud should rub o on other players and create a winning environment. Stu
Rothell (511, Senior) is coming of ACL surgery from an injury he suered last year. Rothell has
not play basketball for the high school since his 10th grade season where he played point
guard for the JV team.
The top newcomer post players include Marcus Quinn (60, Junior), Jesse Burton (64,
Sophomore), Tallon McAbee (62, Junior), and Cody Lee (64, Junior). Quinn is a lefty post
player who has great footwork. Quinn also has the ability to knock down the mid-range shot
when left open. Burton is a young player who is going to have to grow up quickly. His size
makes him a huge factor in the success of this years team. Burtons strength are rebounding
and screening but as the season progresses, we think he can be more of a contributor scoring
the basketball. McAbee is currently in rehab for torn cartilage in his knee. This injury occurred
during football season and we are not sure of his return to the hardwood at this time. Lee is a
player who has worked hard the whole o season to make the basketball team. We hope he
can continue to improve daily and contribute to the success of this years team.
With the return of five potential starters and the addition of some hard playing over
achievers, this season has the making to be one to remember. Our pre-season schedule is so
tough but also an opportunity to play against some of the top talent in the state of South
Carolina. Our team will get to participate in the Bradford Kiwanis Tournament in Florida before
returning home to defend our title in the 18th Annual Battle at the Border Christmas
Tournament held at Landrum High School. After Christmas, the Cardinals will begin region play
and on January 15th (MLK Day) the Cardinals have been invited to play in the SC Prep Hoops
Showcase held at Greenville High School. It should be a very exciting year so grab your
popcorn and coke, sit back and enjoy the show!
