The Elephant Man From the novel We Didnt Mean To Go to

From the novel The Elephant Man by
Tim Vicary, a character in which I thought
who acted bravely is the elephant man
himself. After his tour to Belgium with
Silcock, Merrick was left by Silcock
without any care. Imagine how Merrick
would have felt with his condition being
left alone, scared and penniless. On the
contrary, Merrick acted bravely to board a
ship and travel back to England from
Belgium. For an ordinary person, it is
something normal, but for Merrick it was
an act of bravery due to his condition.
That is why I recall the incident of a brave
action committed by one character from
the novel.
Sea by Arthur Ransome, the character
who acted bravely would be John. After
Jim had left the boys and went ashore to
get petrol for the sailboat, a sudden burst
of fog made the children panicked. The
children could not see the land because of
the fog. When the Goblin started moving,
John tried to take control of the Goblin.
Jim had warned John about the shoals in
the shallow water. John bravely tries to
check but he cannot see anything because
of the fog. John realizes the anchor is too
short to reach the bottom of the sea
because it is high tide now. After trying
hard to pull more chain out, the whole
chain disappears in the sea. For me, the act
that John showed was very brave and if not
because of his act, the children might have
end up crashing to the shore because of the
wind.

Moby Dick

From the novel Moby Dick by Herman

Meville, an incident where the character
acted bravely that I recall the most was
Starbuck when he was pointing a gun to
Captain Ahabs head. After Captain Ahab
threw away the map, everybody was
frustrated and thought that the captain has
gone crazy. Later that night, Starbuck went
in Captain Ahabs room only to find that
the old man was sleeping on his desk.
Bravely, he took Captain Ahabs gun and
pointed it at Captain Ahabs head by
wanting to kill him. Although after a few
minutes, Starbuck withdrew his intention,
to me his act of courage should be
credited. It is very difficult for a person to
act like he did. If they lost Captain Ahab, it
might be the end of their misery but
Starbuck had a long thought and cancelled
his intention. For me, it took a very brave
man to do what he did.

Section B (Question 3) This review will elaborate on Alis spending

based upon the given monthly allowance by

The Elephant Man
From the novel The Elephant Man by
Tim Vicary the occurrence where two
characters met and worked together to
achieve success was at the beginning of
the novel where Dr. Treves came across a
picture of Merrick in front of a shop near
the hospital. Dr. Treves felt pity of
Merrick and thought that he could do
something to help the poor man. After
being reunited again when Merrick was
left by Silcock in Belgium, Dr. Treves
worked very hard to fulfil Merricks needs
as he thought nothing else can be done to
fix the appearance of Merrick. Merrick
was being patient with Dr. Treves effort
and worked together by attending a theatre
show organised by Dr. Treves. That
patience got paid off when Merrick felt
very happy with his life and forgotten all
the misery he had gone through. If its not
because of the co-operation between the
two characters, what had been planned for
Merrick might not come true.
Moby Dick
From the novel Moby Dick by Herman
Meville, the meeting between Ishmael and
Queequeg has brought about a success
between them. Queequeg was perceived as
a weird person by other people. The two of
them met accidentally when they had to
share a room after there was no more room
left for Ishmael to rent and no one wanted
to share a room with the weird
Queequeg. They became good friends after
only one night. Both of them went to
register as sailors at the Pequod and
although Ishmael was not physically fit as
a whaler, Queequeg was almost instantly
accepted. The two of them work together
very well to kill quite a number of whales
as both of them were placed in the same
boat. The success story begins when
during a near death incident, Queequeg
requested to be buried in a coffin.
Although the coffin was not really used, it
functions as a float which saved Ishmael
after the Pequod sank. If it had not been by
Queequeg request for a coffin, Ishmael
might not have anything to cling on to
when floating in the water after Pequod
sank.
We Didnt Mean To Go to Sea
From the novel We Didnt Mean To Go to
Sea by Arthur Ransome, the two
characters that met would be John and the
pilot. When the children had reached a
land in the opposite direction, they see a
pilot ship. They use a blue and white flag
to get the pilot ship to help them. Because
there is no adult in the yacht, John comes
up with a plan. He asks his other siblings
to pretend as adults and act like there is a
party down in the cabin. Because of the
show put up by the children, the pilot ship
had confidence to help John and his
siblings. If John had not met the pilot, no
one would be able to help John to guide
him and to help in stopping the Goblin
safely at Flushing (in Holland)

The Elephant Man
From the novel The Elephant Man by
Tim Vicary, one incident that changed the
course of the novel was when Merrick had
a visit from the Queen of England, Queen
Alexandria. This incident changed the
course of the novel because before the
visit, Merrick had always wanted to live by
himself in a lighthouse or with blind
people because he always feels that people
are afraid of his looks. After the visit of
such a beautiful lady like Queen
Alexandria, Merrick felt alive once more
whereby he was treated like an ordinary
man and not a monster. After the visit
from Queen Alexandria, Merrick began to
pursue his dreams of watching a theatre
play and living in a country side. Dr.
Treves fulfilled Merricks dream and that
had changed the course of the novel
whereby Merrick felt too comfortable
being a normal person when he decided to
sleep by lying flat on the bed. That action
had caused him to break his neck and met
his death. If it wasnt because of the visit
from Queen Alexandria, Merrick would
end up living alone in a lighthouse
thinking that nobody would want to be
friends with a monster.
Moby Dick
From the novel Moby Dick by Herman
Meville that I studied, one incident that
changed the course of the novel was when
Captain Ahabs ship; Pequod met with the
Rachel (another whaling ship). The captain
of the Rachel, Captain Gardiner asked a
favour from Captain Ahab to look after his
son who got drifted away in the effort of
killing the white whale. Unfortunately,
Captain Ahab refused to the request but in
turn continued for his quest to find the
white whale leaving the Rachel to continue
looking for the captains son. If Captain
Ahab agreed to join together Captain
Gardiner to look for his son, Captain Ahab
may not come across the white whale and
the whole crew may also survive. Most
importantly, Ishmael may not be alive and
saved by the Rachel that thought he was
Captain Gardiners son. Ishmael might not
survive to tell the story. This incident had
changed the course of the novel making it
adventurous and fulfilling.
We Didnt Mean To Go to Sea
From the novel We Didnt Mean To Go to
Sea by Arthur Ransome, one incident that
changed the course of the novel was when
the fuel of the sail boat, Goblin went out.
After the Goblin cannot be put to sail
because there was no wind, Jim anchors
the boat and decided to go ashore to get
some petrol. He leaves the children in the
yacht and gets John to take charge. After
being gone for more than six hours, the
children got worried as the tide is rising.
Then, John decided to steer the sail boat to
Holland. That incident changed the course
of the novel. If it had not been because of
the petrol, the children might not be
bravely sailing the boat to the unknown.

The Elephant Man
From the novel The Elephant Man by
Tim Vicary, I noticed quite a number of
happy moments were cited in the novel.
My first recall would be when Merrick
was given his own room at the hospital.
The first room was a bathroom for him to
wash himself and the second room had a
bed, table and chairs. In this room, Merrick
can spend his time reading books in which
he liked it very much. For Merrick, the
characters in the books were alive like us
and that made him very happy.
The second moment was when the Queen
of England, Queen Alexandria visited
Merrick at the hospital. Merrick felt happy
because he was treated like a person and it
was also the first time he had had a female
visitor. He mentioned to the Queen that he
was very happy because he had a home,
friends and his books.
Moby Dick
From the novel Moby Dick written by
Herman Meville, I noticed that there
existed two important moments where the
characters felt happy. The first moment
was when Captain Ahab showed his face
after three weeks of sailing. Captain Ahab
was holding a bag of gold. He offered the
gold to anybody who can inform him
about the presence of a white whale. The
first one to inform him will get the gold.
That moment was a happy moment for all
of the sailors because they were not
making much money as sailors and getting
that gold would make them able to buy a
lot of nice things.
The second moment was when Fedallah
shouted, The white whale for the first
time after months of sailing. After the
second shower, the sailors could see a
white reflection in the water. Captain Ahab
saw it too. His face was as happy as a
childs face on Christmas morning. That
was a happy moment for Captain Ahab
and it was a happy moment for the rest of
the sailors too.

From the novel We Didnt Mean To Go to
Sea by Arthur Ransome, a happy moment
was recollected by me was when the
children had met their father in Holland.
After they had reached Flushing in
Holland, the children seemed lost of not
knowing what to do in an alien place. The
pilot was surprised to see that there was no
adult on the sail boat. Soon after that, their
father came to them. The pilot gives them
charts for the North Sea so that they can
sail back home. The children tell their
father that Mother and Jim do not know
about what has happened to them. Father
sends a telegram to his friend to Shotley
and asks his friend to send a telegram to
Mother so that Mother will think that the
children have sent a telegram from
Shotley. They buy some supplies for their
journey and five pairs of Dutch wooden
shoes to bring back home. The children are
happy that their Father is with them. That
was a happy moment for John and his
siblings.
