Author Visit

On Nov. 13th and Nov. 14th, ICSA will be hosting Boori Monty Pryor, an indigenous Australian
Children's Laureate. Pryor is a multi-talented performer who has worked in numerous industries including
film, television, modelling, sport, music and educational theatre. He is also known as an articulate public
speaker on Aboriginal issues. His father was from the Birri Gubba of the Bowen region and his mother is
from Yarrabah (near Cairns), a descendant of the Kungganji. Monty is an accomplished didjeridoo player
who has performed solo with the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra. Since the early nineties Monty has
performed internationally at Museums, Theatres and Festivals.

Monty has collaborated with Meme McDonald on five award-winning books: Maybe Tomorrow (Penguin
1998), My Girragundji (Allen & Unwin 1998), The Binna Binna Man (Allen & Unwin 1999), Nunjul The
Sun (Allen and Unwin 2002) and Flytrap (Allen & Unwin 2002). Monty was the Childrens Laureate of
Australia, sharing this title with Alison Lester in 2012 and 2013. In 2017 the short film Brown Paper Bag
(starring Monty and inspired by his life and work) won the St Kilda Film Festival Best Achievement in
Indigenous Film Making award. Later this year ABC will premiere a new film on iView titled The
Wrong Kind of Black based on selected stories from Montys extraordinary life.
