In 2014, mobile data traffic was nearly 30 times the size of the entire global Internet traffic in 2000. Over
the next five years, mobile data is projected to increase by a factor of 10. Capacity, access and reliability
are words often used to describe what current and future wireless infrastructure needs to be. Solutions
like distributed antenna systems (DAS) assist in providing capacity and access. And for a DAS, the design
and installation of the DAS is vital for the reliability demanded by users.

ANSI/BICSI 006-2015 is the first DAS infrastructure standard that provides designers and installers

Information Technology Systems Design and Implementation
Best Practices for Healthcare Institutions and Facilities
Each day, it seems some new healthcare or IT development is released, increasing the pace of integration
of IT systems. Be it electronic health records, newer and faster diagnostic equipment or changing
inpatient care and experience, all are increasingly reliant on the stability of IT infrastructure.

But as designers can attest, healthcare design can be very complex, due to the number and variety of
systems, operational spaces and additional regulations specific to healthcare. Todays modern hospital
includes areas comparable to residential, commercial, general office and industrial environments, all of
which require not only the traditional phone and network connectivity, but other systems, as well. These additional systems include security and building
support, data and record archive and retrieval, and specialized communication (e.g., nurse call), all of which have added security requirements governing
access, encryption and even physical location.

To aid todays designer, ANSI/BICSI 004-2012, Information Technology Systems Design and Implementation Best Practices for Healthcare Institutions
and Facilities, has been released to provide guidance on the issues specific to the healthcare environment. Written for the wide variety of facilities,
including hospitals, outpatient clinics and skilled nursing facilities, this standard covers not only common telecommunications and IT infrastructure
concerns, but also specific healthcare systems, such as nurse call, interactive television/hospitality systems and connected medical imaging.

ANSI/BICSI 003-2014
Building Information Modeling (BIM) Practices for
Information Technology Systems
The request and adoption of building information modeling (BIM) for information and
communications technology (ICT) projects has been steadily increasing in recent years.
Architectural, engineering and construction firms all differ in what they require and ultimately
provide their client. When combined with the varying levels of information provided by
manufacturers that support all aspects of the construction industry, the result can be
inefficiencies, frustration and a failure to meet project expectations.

ANSI/BICSI 003-2014, Building Information Modeling (BIM) Practices for Information Technology
Systems is the first BIM standard written specifically for ICT. At its core, the standard provides detailed information about BIM content models and
object parameters, setting the recommended levels and guidelines for BIM models. Also contained are considerations about the integration of
BIM within projects, as well as identifying items within ICT systems that often enter into spatial conflicts with other areas of construction
(e.g., electrical, mechanical).

ANSI/BICSI 001-2009, Information Transport Systems Design Standard for K-12 Educational

the educational environments of K-12 (primary and secondary) schools and facilities. Providing
information that cuts across multidisciplinary design efforts, this standard provides direction,
allowing for savings in building construction and renovation, as well as the planning of future
growth and changes.

In addition, given the specialized needs of the end usersthe students themselvesANSI/BICSI 001-2009 goes beyond comparable design standards,
providing guidance in the selection and implementation of materials, such as types of cabling, to provide a safe environment for all.

Structured Cabling Systems

A structured cabling system is a complete collective configuration of cabling and associated
hardware at a given site which, once installed, provides a comprehensive infrastructure. This
course discusses pathways, spaces, firestopping, codes and standards, all of which are a core
focus of the ICT designer.

Media Selection
ICT designers must be aware of the various types of media (cable) that are available. Each type and
configuration has specific uses and defined installation methods. This course focuses on the types
and characteristics of ICT media and their installation procedures, so designers can make the most
appropriate media choice for each design.

Bonding and Grounding

Bonding and grounding (earthing) are an integral portion of the telecommunications infrastructure
for providing a safe electrical operating environment. They are also instrumental in providing a
reliable reference for the operation of electronic equipment. This course offers students the
opportunity to advance their bonding and grounding (earthing) knowledge by reviewing basic
electrical theory, grounding system configurations and components.

ICT systems have grown to be relied upon like other utilities, making the safe and optimum
installation of these systems of paramount importance. BICSI created the Information
Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM) to address this need.

The foundation of the BICSI Cabling Installation Program, the ITSIMM provides cabling
installers, technicians and field managers with access to the best practices of installing
systems that meet and exceed the requirements of their clients.

Within its 900 pages, the ITSIMM not only delivers in-depth instruction on how to install,
test and diagnose issues of copper- and optical fiber-based cabling, it also provides details of
handling supporting structures and systems, including firestopping, bonding and grounding
(earthing), and cabling pathways. The ITSIMM also provides details for installing within
specialized environments, such as health care facilities, and addresses managing installation

The ITSIMM is the basis for all of the BICSI Installer and Technician registration exams and is

Planning and Installation Methods

NECA/BICSI 607 specifies aspects of planning and installation of telecommunications bonding and

grounding systems. While this standard aligns with related standards, such as the NEC and ANSI/TIA
607-A, Commercial Building Grounding (Earthing) and Bonding Requirements for Telecommunications,
additional requirements and information for components and connectors of these systems are also
included. And because the best design can be undone by poor implementation, a majority of NECA/BICSI
607 details installation methods and practices to minimize potential grounding system failure.

Telecommunications Cabling

ANSI/NECA/BICSI 568-2006 was a joint effort between BICSI and the National Electrical
Contractors Association (NECA) prompted by concern over the lack of a standard for the installation of
telecommunications premises cabling systems. This standard describes minimum requirements and
procedures for installing the infrastructure for telecommunications, including balanced twisted-pair
copper cabling and optical fiber cabling that transport telecommunications, voice, data and video signals.
All work described in this standard is in accordance with NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in
the Workplace, and is also written to describe a neat and workmanlike manner as referenced by the
National Electrical Code (NEC).
