Police Officer Capstone 2

The duties of a police officer, also known as a law enforcement officer require a great deal of

courage and integrity. Without law enforcement officers, the world would be chaotic and

uncontrollable. Police officers focus on protecting people and property. They patrol the areas

they are assigned, which sometimes include entire authority and control. Officers also respond to

calls, enforce laws, make arrests and occasionally testify in court cases. They often make traffic

stops, respond to domestic disturbances, and, at times, provide first aid to someone involved in a

traffic accident or injured in a domestic incident until paramedics arrive. Much of their time is

divided between patrolling, writing reports, and filling out forms. The RCMP in Canada requires

their officers to be at least 19 years old at the time of engagement. Although a post secondary

education is not required, the majority of applicants strive to receive a diploma or bachelors in

major related to the job of a police officer. A degree dramatically increases your chances of

being hired because it shows that youre knowledgeable and experienced in your profession.

For my Capstone project, I will look forward to setting up a presentation for the class in which a

police officer will come speak and educate the class about negative influences that the youth can

be affected by such as gangs, drugs and crime. This project is very realistic and can be executed.

We have a Constable that works full-time at Lord Tweedsmuir and I hope to talk to him about a

possible presentation. I had a nice conversation with a Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) officer

about a possible presentation. Ironically, He said that there is a group of RCMP officers from the

Surrey Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) who were in the works wanting to do a similar

presentation at high schools. Individually, I will also create a Prezi about the topic. I will include

ways to steer yourself clear of distractions, students opinions and stats about the lifestyle that the

youth are dragged into.

Completing this capstone is very important to me because the role of a policeman is something

that I believe I am ready to take on. Growing up in home where my brother and I am the only

fluent English speaker, Ive been put in many situations where Ive been thrown in a responsible

role when it comes to communication with others. Since having knowledge of other cultures is

looked at as an asset in the law enforcement profession, I decided to start attended Punjabi

classes a little while back. The reason why this is an asset is because there are lots of people in

the lower mainland with a Punjabi background and Surrey is one of the most multicultural cities

in the world. On the other hand, the ability to follow and work for someone else has been

something Ive been doing from a very young age as I played soccer, basketball and did bhangra

dancing at very high levels. This project will help me take those skills to a whole another level.

Getting involved in my community by volunteering with many groups such as PE Leadership,

Power of 1 and other places has helped my gain a lot of self confidence. Gaining experience

about what a positive lifestyle is like will help me recognize anything that is negative.

Through this project, I hope to make a connection between my academic and career goals. This

project will help me gain valuable information about the police officer profession and their role

that will help for me down the road. By preparing myself, I will feel very organized and

comfortable while thinking about my future in post secondary and life in general. Organization

of course, is very important in University since life gradually becomes faster and overwhelming

for some. This project will also tremendously make the remainder of high school easier for me

since I will find out what classes and courses I must take and excel in order to be accepted into a

good University which includes courses that can prove to be helpful to me becoming a

policeman.

Different aspects and goals that I hope to achieve when completing my capstone project are:

- Learning about the role that police officers play in the community

- Learning how Youth can get help with any negative problems (Drugs, Violence, Crime

etc.)

- Gaining knowledge about skills, courses and experience needed to become a police

officer

- Educating others on the danger of a negative lifestyle

Having a Law Enforcement job has always interested me, and I knew that I had what it took to

become one. When I talked to a police officer at school last year, I made my decision final

because I was very attracted to their role in the community. In addition, becoming a law

enforcement officer demands of you to be a good the role model, especially to younger kids. This

motivated me to become a leader. In addition, knowing that there is a lot of crime related

problems in the Punjabi communities of Surrey, gives me another reason to pursue my goal of

becoming a law enforcement officer.

I plan on this prezi/presentation taking me about 2-3 months to complete. Most of the time will

probably be spent on getting in touch with officers who are willing to come and talk. After that, I

want to take about 1 month properly plan the presentation to make sure I am fully prepared so

everything will flow smoothly.
