1. Pair up students
2. Give each pair number cards, counters, and toothpicks
3. Explain: You will be converting improper fractions into mixed numbers
4. Review mixed numbers and improper fractions with students
1. Write 1 1/2 on the board; ask students how to make this an improper fraction
2. Write 8/5 on the board; ask students how to make this a mixed number
5. Have students take out the 9 and 4 number cards and tell them to make it into an improper fraction using the toothpick
as the line of the fraction in between the numbers
6. Ask: Is this a mixed number or an improper fraction?
7. Ask: What is the 9 called (numerator) and what does it mean (9 pieces)
8. Ask: What is the 4 called (denominator) and what does it mean (4 pieces in 1 whole)
9. Demonstrate with the counters how to move nine counters into groups of 4
10. Ask: How many wholes do I have? (2) How many counters do I have left over? (1)
11. Ask: What would my mixed number be? (2 1/4)
12. Do one more example if necessary:
1. 17/5
4) Mixed number/improper fractions worksheet (attached)
1. Go over the example problem at the top of the page with the students
1. Explain how they showed their work in the box
2. Explain how to find the mixed number on the number line
1. We have 2 wholes so we know that we can go to the 2 on the number line
2. We know where 2 1/2 is (show on number line)
