Captulo 8 - A Harmonia da Loja

A harmonia da Loja deve ser, conforme se conclui da leitura do texto, o norte da
bssola do Venervel Mestre. Nesse captulo o autor enfoca o tema da harmonia
e trs importantes orientaes gerais de como construir essa harmonia e de como
nos comportarmos quando a harmonia esta ameaada.

8. The Harmony of the Lodge
The purpose of this chapter is not to set you
looking anxiously for trouble where there isnt any.
Nor can it forecast with accuracy every kind of
problem that can arise in interpersonal relationships
and still less can it prescribe a course of action to
be followed in every case. Nevertheless it is possible
to offer guidelines so that you can take positive steps
to maintain that harmony which should at all times
characterize Freemasons, and continue to do so, even
if from time to time some difficulty arises.
The most important consideration is that every
Brother should have a feeling of belonging to the
fellowship of the Lodge and should not be allowed in
any way to feel excluded. The custom of shaking
hands with all, or as many as possible, of those
present when arriving at any of our gatherings may
seem time consuming and unnecessary in these days
of accustomed haste, but it does serve as a reminder
to us all, and particularly to a reticent Brother, that
we are and continue to be welcome in each others
company.
Nothing can give greater pleasure when attending
our Lodge than the certainty that all its members are
on the best possible terms with one another, and
happy in the discharge of their various duties. Not
only in the Temple but also at the festive board
afterwards, your total confidence in one anothers
forbearance and support will be the best possible
testimonial to the objectives of our Craft, and you
may be sure that this will not go unnoticed by your
visitors.
If you agree to a suggestion however small which
you feel will increase the goodwill among members
of your Lodge, discuss it carefully with your likely
successor. This will normally be the Senior Warden.
His acceptance and support will ensure that your idea
can be carried on when your year of office is over,
and become a permanent part of the life of the
Lodge.
In the Lodge
It may be hard to break old habits but, with the
exceptions pointed out in Chapter 2, the Brethren can
sit where they like in the Lodge Meetings. Past
Masters can for example sit with the newest
members if they wish, or invite some of the younger
Brethren to sit among the senior members. A
conscious effort like this may be a timely gesture

O objetivo deste captulo no levar voc a ver
ansiosamente um problema quando no existe nenhum.
Tambm no se pode prever com preciso qualquer tipo
de problema que pode surgir nas relaes interpessoais -
e muito menos se pode prescrever um curso de ao a
ser seguido em cada caso. No entanto, possvel
oferecer orientaes para que voc possa dar passos
positivos de forma a manter a harmonia que deve
sempre caracterizar os maons, mesmo que de vez em
quando surja alguma dificuldade.
A considerao mais importante que cada irmo deve
ter um sentimento de pertencer comunho da Loja e
que no deve ser permitida de forma alguma que se
sintam excludos. O costume de apertar as mos de
todos (ou tantos quanto possvel) os presentes, quando
chegamos em qualquer um dos nossos encontros, pode
parecer moroso e desnecessrio, nestes tempos de
pressa, mas serve como um lembrete para todos ns, e
particularmente a um irmo reticente, de que somos e
continuamos a ser bem-vindos em companhia um do
outro.
Nada pode dar maior prazer ao comparecermos nossa
Loja do que a certeza de que o relacionamento entre
todos os seus membros esto nas melhores condies
possveis, com todos felizes no exerccio das suas
diversas funes e atribuies, no s no Templo como
tambm no jantar festivo posterior. A confiana total de
um no outro, a pacincia e apoio entre os irmos ser o
melhor testemunho dos nossos compromissos para com
a Ordem, e voc pode ter certeza que isso no ir passar
despercebido pelos visitantes.
Caso concorde com uma sugesto, ainda que pequena,

Na Loja

The younger Brethren and junior Officers are
unlikely to be guilty of thoughtless behaviour while
the Lodge is open, but in some Lodges the Past
Masters have a regrettable tendency to talk among
themselves. This is not only a discourtesy to the
Officers conducting the ceremony; it is an irritation
to those to whom the proceedings are new,
unfamiliar and absorbing. The only people who have
any excuse to engage in private conversation during
a ceremony are the Secretary and Treasurer, and
even then they should set an example by keeping it
to a minimum.
Votes and Resolutions
In many formal assemblies when a vote is taken,
it is the custom for the chairman or other presiding
officer to abstain from voting. If, as Master of your
Lodge, you follow this practice the effect will be to
emphasize your impartiality. In the normal
circumstances of our Lodge meetings your restraint
is highly unlikely to affect the outcome.
Should a vote be even or indecisive it is usually
considered the prerogative of a presiding officer to
exercise a additional or 'casting' vote. He will vote if
possible in such a way that the matter under
discussion can be raised again later. The whole
object is to give all concerned the best chance to
consider and discuss their respective views.
The Festive Board
At the after proceedings it is natural that groups
of friends will want to sit together. There is nothing
wrong with this unless a group begins to isolate itself
from the remainder of the Brethren. A reproach
would be unhelpful and might perhaps sow the seed
of ill feeling. Instead it is a good idea to make some
gesture of good fellowship towards them or to
involve them directly in some part of the
proceedings.
In a Lodge of a certain age there will be a
particularly clear distinction between founder
members an the steadily increasing number of those
who have joined since. Here it is important to
recognize the divide and make every effort to
minimize the distinction. Whichever group you
belong to, you should make a special effort to offer
good fellowship to the other. Asking for advice or

Votos e Resolues
Em muitas Reunies formais quando ocorre uma
votao, costume que o Presidente se abstenha de
votar. Se, como Mestre da Loja segue esta prtica, o
efeito ser o de salientar a sua imparcialidade. Em
condies normais de nossas reunies da Loja sua
absteno altamente improvvel que afete o resultado.
Caso a votao resulte em empate geralmente
considerada prerrogativa do presidente dar o 'voto de
minerva'. Ele deve votar, se possvel, de tal forma que a
matria em discusso possa ser colocada novamente em
outra oportunidade. A inteno de dar a todos a
oportunidade de melhor analisar e discutir suas
posies.
O Jantar Festivo
Aps as sesses natural que um grupo de amigos
queiram sentar-se juntos para uma bebida e conversar.
No h nada errado com isto a menos que o grupo
comece a se isolar do resto dos irmos. Fazer uma
reprovao seria intil e talvez semearia a semente do
mal-estar. Em vez disso, uma boa idia fazer um gesto
de companheirismo para com eles ou para envolv-los
diretamente em alguma parte dos procedimentos.
Em uma Loja com certa idade, haver uma clara
distino entre membros fundadores e Irmos mais
antigos com o nmero crescente de pessoas que se
juntaram desde ento. importante reconhecer a

Although our Antient Charges instruct us to
avoid excess, it can sometimes happen that a Brother
exceeds his personal tolerance to alcohol. The effect
of this can vary from person to person but generally
it can be regarded as a temporary suspension of one's
critical faculty. Should such a Brother become
unusually assertive, there is little to be served by
engaging in any kind of confrontation; those close to
him should simply try to divert his attention. If it is a
recurring problem, his closest friends should be
asked what, in their opinion, would be the kindest
way to prevent any future embarrassment.
It is in the interest of harmony that we are
instructed as Freemasons to abstain from any topic of
political or religious discussion. Grand Lodge has
also reminded us from time to time that in our after
dinner speeches and conversation we should avoid
any lapse into coarseness of allusion or expression.
The Stewards
The Stewards have an especial duty to see to the
arrangements at the festive board and to see that
'every Brother is suitable provided for'. This includes
ensuring that each Brother can be seated as closely
as possible to the guests he has invited, yet taking
precedence as far as practicable according to his
Masonic rank. If these two considerations clash at
any time it should be made clear to the Stewards that
they can and should appeal to a senior Past Master
for guidance. The Director of Ceremonies may
discreetly make himself available from time to time
if such help is needed. In some Lodges the necessary
guidance is ensured by appointing a senior member
as a permanent Chief Steward.
The Visitors
Perhaps the best guide to the state of your Lodge
is the reaction of your visitors. The greatest
compliment they can pay you is for them to feel
themselves welcome among good friends. As Master
of the Lodge make an effort to speak, if only briefly,
to as many of them as you can, and remembering the
peculiar duty of the Junior Warden - mentioned in
Chapter 4 - ask him to help you in this. Try if you
can to memorize the visitors' names, especially if
you see them regularly. You will know things have
been a success when a visitor asks to become a

Os Mordomos
Os Mordomos tm um dever especial de cuidar dos
arranjos no Jantar Festivo e de ver que "cada irmo est

seus, e, na medida do possvel, que os Irmos tomem

Loja.
Loja da Instruo
Como mencionado no Captulo 9, na Loja da
Instruo que sero trocas notcias e informaes sobre
os membros que tem estado ausentes ou no se sentindo
bem. Poder ser decido que algum Irmo far uma
joining member.
Lodge of Instruction
As mentioned in Chapter 9, it is at the Lodge of
Instruction that news can be exchanged about
members who are absent or unwell. A decision can
be made for someone to visit a Brother who has not
been seen lately, rather than allow him to feel that he
has been forgotten. There may be nothing wrong -
but it is important to make sure.
When a Lodge of Instruction is engaged in
rehearsing a ceremony, it is just as important to
refrain from private conversation as it is in the
Lodge.
Pay particular attention to the Stewards when at
the Lodge of Instruction. If there are more members
present than offices to be filled, make sure that is the
Stewards who are offered something to do. Remind
them that it is their duty to be prepared to fill any
vacant office in the Lodge. If a Steward does not
come to Lodge of Instruction, don't let him think that
it has passed unnoticed.
The Lodge Committee
A gathering of the Lodge Committee may
present an opportunity for you do raise - outside the
business of the meeting - a matter which causes you
concern. The older Brethren may be able to compare
their experience of events which have gone before,
or offer useful observations on the present situation
or on the personal nature of individual members.
They will share your concern for the general good of
the Lodge and all who are in it, and can be expected
to support you in all you do to further it.
It seems hardly that contention in the Lodge
should become so serious as to be referred to the
Lodge Committee. If such a thing happens it will be
tactful to ensure that the Lodge Committee. If such a

read at a later date.
Variations in Masonic Procedure
In the rich texture of our Masonic tradition it will

Quando uma Loja de Instruo est envolvida no ensaio
de uma cerimnia, muito importante que os Irmos se
abstenham de conversas privadas.
Preste ateno especial aos Mordomos, quando em Loja
de Instruo. Se existem mais membros presentes do
que cargos a serem preenchidos, certifique-se que ao
Mordomo seja oferecido algo para fazer. Lembre-lhes
que seu dever estarem preparados para preencher
qualquer cargo vago na Loja. Se um mordomo no vem
para Loja de Instruo, no deixe que ele pense que tem
passado despercebido.
O Comit da Loja
Na reunio do Comit da Loja1 pode ser a oportunidade
para voc apresentar - fora do dia de Sesso - um
assunto que lhe cause preocupao. Os irmos mais
experientes podem ser capazes de comparar o que te
preocupa com a prpria experincia baseado em
acontecimentos j ocorridos anteriormente, ou oferecer
observaes teis sobre a situao atual ou ainda sobre
a natureza pessoal de cada membro. Eles iro
compartilhar sua preocupao para o bem geral da Loja
e todos os seus membros, e voc pode esperar receber
deles o apoi-lo em tudo que voc for fazer em prol da
Loja.

their own Lodges is the only correct way.
Occasionally well intentioned visitors at Lodges
attempt to point out errors when, in fact, Lodges are
carrying out the standard practice of the wording
they use.
Senior Masons might well make it their special
care to see that all discussions among the Brethren
on differences in procedure, whether in the Lodge or
out of it, are conducted with good humour and
magnanimity.
The Younger Brethren
It is very easy for the most recent newcomers to
feel that they are not yet in the mainstream of life in
the Lodge, and they may not be able to appreciate
the difficulty older people sometimes have in
retaining a memory for names. Make an effort if you
can to greet each one by name. The reward will be
worth while.
Invite them to come to the Lodge of Instruction
as soon as the work in it matches the progress they
gave made.
Every Past Master should consider it his duty and
privilege to offer help and guidance to the younger
members and junior Officers, and should strive to do
so without seeming to be superior or patronizing.
One way to achieve this, when suggesting that
something should be done in a particular way, is to
be prepared to give a brief explanation of the reason
behind it.
The Older Brethren
Sometimes one finds that one of the older
members of the Lodge suddenly drops out of all its
activities. Do try to find out exactly why, by
courteous but if necessary persistent enquiry. If the
Brother genuinely no longer feels equal to attending
our meetings, or is prevented by circumstances, we
must understand and accept. On the other hand he
may feel that in some way he has let the Lodge
down. This is not impossible when an older Brother

Os Irmos mais novos
muito fcil os Irmos recm-chegados sentir que eles
ainda no esto no mainstream da vida da Loja, e eles
podem no ser capazes de compreender a dificuldade
que os mais idosos tm em manter na memria os seus
nomes. Faa um esforo, para cumprimentar cada um
pelo nome. A recompensa valer a pena.
Convide-os a participarem da Loja de Instruo, pois a
participao nela coincidem com o progresso que eles
devem fazer.
Cada Past Master deve considerar seu dever e o

Os Irmos mais velhos
s vezes verifica-se que um dos membros mais velhos
da Loja de repente deixa de cumprir com todas as suas
atividades.Tente descobrir os motivos, com cortesia,
mas com a persistncia necessria. Se o Irmo
realmente no se sente capaz em a participar de nossas
reunies, ou seja, por estar impedido pelas
circunstncias, devemos entender e aceitar. Por outro
lado, ele pode sentir que de alguma forma, prejudicou a
Loja. Isso no impossvel quando um irmo mais
velho, com sua falta de memria, se ofereceu
voluntariamente para ajudar com o trabalho e o
resultado fica aqum do alto padro que ele prprio
fixou. Tranquilize-o mostrando que em qualquer caso,
ele apreciado como um amigo e que seus esforos so
valorizados. Quando ele retornar, no faa qualquer
referncia sua ausncia temporria e receba-o
calorosamente.
s vezes acontece que um irmo, que foi atuante
durante muitos anos na Loja, e que tenha atingido alto

years, perhaps by an insistence on trifling detail or
by holding on to an office to which he can no longer
give all it demands. It can be difficult to know how
to deal with this. If humanly possible do nothing to
offend him. Ask the other Past Masters to bear with
him. Allow him to spend the evening of his Masonic
career as far as possible in tranquility. In the long run
every one will benefit from it. No doubt you will
from time to time recall the Installing Master's
exhortation to the Wardens: 'Suffice it to say that
what you observe praiseworthy in others you should
carefully imitate, and what in them may appear
defective you should in yourselves amend'.
The founders will see their own numbers
shrinking with the years and perhaps feel that the
Lodge they created with love and care is no longer
what it used to be. They need to be reassured that the
traditions they brought with them are respected and
treasured and will be preserved.
When you, too, have reached the point at which
you have given all you can as an Officer and older
member, you will be ready to yield your position to a
younger and more active Brother. You will have the
satisfaction of seeing your Lodge administered
lovingly and well under the leadership of the
generation to whom you have handed it on.
The Tyler
The Tyler will usually be a Mason with long
experience of the customs of a number of different
Lodges, and will often hold considerable Masonic
rank.
If he asserts that something should or should not
be done in a particular way, his advice will be meant
kindly and you will naturally feel that importance
should be attached to what he says. It would be wise,
however, not to make any significant change in your
procedures without consulting one or more of your
own Past Masters. When you are quite sure of your
own position it is quit in order to tell the Tyler, in as

O Guarda Externo ser normalmente um maom com
uma longa experincia dos costumes de vrias Lojas,

The Ladies' Festival
The main purpose of a Ladies' Festival is
traditionally to provide a happy occasion to which
we can bring our friends and families, but most
especially our wives, as a 'thank you' to them for
supporting us in our Masonic activities over the year.
Sometimes a Ladies' Festival may seem to have been
well supported and a great success, but on closer
examination it is found that only very few attenders
were Lodge members and their wives, and that most
of the places were taken up by other guests. The
Festival will not then truly have fulfilled its intended
function.
In such a situation the first notion that comes to
mind is to ask various Brethren why they did not
come; but the effect of this might be to cause
embarrassment, and produce replies that are more
courteous than useful. It is a better idea instead to
ask each individual a positive question such as:
'What changes do you feel would encourage more
members of the Lodge to come to our Ladies'
Festival?' After making careful note of each reply,
