Vol. 5 Aug. 24th 2010/Ramadan 14th 1431 H No. 14 Seven Steps on the Road of Taqwa Ramadan has very strong relation to taqwa—God consciousness. We can find this relation in two aspects. Firstly, Ramadan is the month of fasting, of which the ultimate goal is to enhance taqwa of the believing people (al Baqarah [2]:183). Secondly, Ramadan is also the month when Allah the Almighty sent down the Quran as guidance for humankind (al Baqarah [2]:185). However, not every kind of human will get benefit of the Quran. The Quran will be meaningful as guidance only for al muttaqun—people having taqwa (al Baqarah [2]: 2). The Quran mentions characteristics of al muttaqun—people with God consciousness. Among them are as follow. May Allah help us to be parts of them. 1) Having strong believe in ghaib (unseen) They have strong belief in Ghaib (al Baqarah[2]:3), something they cannot see by their eyes. They believe in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets (al Baqarah [2]:177), in which all are unseen (the Book and the Prophets are based on Wahy—inspiration—that is also unseen). They believe by certain that, there is another life after the current life although they cannot get any observable empirical evident of its existence (al Baqarah[2]:4). 2) Performing prayers (Iqamat al shalat) They always perform prayers (al Baqarah[2]:3,177) on each prayer time with careful prostration, bows, and recitations. In their prayers, they try hard to present all solemnity and full submissiveness (al Mu`minun [23]:2) 3) Giving zakat They always give zakat (al Baqarah[2]:3,177), including zakatul fithr in Ramadan and zakat of their wealth. Narrated Abdullah bin Abbas,”The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) prescribed the zakatul fithr as a purification of the fasting from empty and obscene talk and as food for the poor…” (Abu Dawood, good isnad) 4) Spending beloved wealth They also spend parts of their wealth, although they love them to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, to the poor, to the wayfarer, and to those who ask (al Baqarah[2]:3,177). They spend them both in prosperity and in adversity (Ali Imran[3]:134). 5) Fulfilling every covenant They are so trustworthy that whenever they make a covenant, they always fulfill it (al Baqarah[2]:177). 6) Being patient Their hearths are full of patience in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of holy fighting (al Baqarah[2]:177). 7) Being Merciful Their hearths are so merciful that they repress anger and pardon people who hurt them (Ali Imran[3]:143).

Allah encourages humankind to observe the flying birds and to think deeply how they are able to keep flying in the sky. It is because in this are proofs of Him for the believers. Mention the name of surah and the number of verse in 14th chapter of the Quran containing interpretation similar to this statement.
