Flipped Classroom Lesson Plan

READINESS
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
B. Objective: Students will identify and describe the Miami Indian tribe as well as their living
environment and cultural traditions.

C. Standard(s):
IAS: 4.1.2 Identify and describe historic Native American Indian groups that lived in
Indiana at the time of early European exploration, including ways these groups adapted to
and interacted with the physical environment
ISTE: Empowered Learner a) plan and employ effective strategies to locate information
and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits
II. Home Based Study DAY 1
Students will view the video on Miami Indians on the classroom page and compare what is said with
information in their text book about the Miami Indians by taking notes.
III. In-Class Lesson Study DAY 2
Anticipatory Set
Students are to discuss with their group the notes they took and the similarities between
the video and the information in the book. (3 minutes)
The teacher has each group share with the class one idea they all discover when
comparing notes. (2 minutes)
Teacher leads a short discussion about the video content. Students ask Questions about
aspects of the video or content they did not understand (5-10 minutes)

IV. Purpose:
Today we will learn about the Miami tribe and their cultural traditions as well way of living. It is
important for us to understand learn about the native history that happened within our own state.

V.Lesson Presentation (Input/Output) (40 minutes)

Activity: Students will work in groups to create their own wigwam/environment in which they feel
best represents the Miami Indians. They are to collect natural resources from outside or bring some
from home. Have a list of key components that students must include within their project
Materials:
Cardboard (provided)
Scissors
Construction paper
Glue
Natural Resources Collected
Accommodations: for students with special needs or an impairment they can use the
computers/iPad to further research Indian environments and resources they used.
Guided Practice:
1. Journal entry/reflection on what they learned from the video
2. Small group sharing/discussion
3. Presentation of project to class.
