The 1st section of the hydraulic pump (25/32 cm/r) supplies pressurized oil to the steering system. The pressure
relief valve (23 MPa / 230 bar) is located next to the pump.
The system has a priority valve which ensures that there is always enough oil for steering.
The steering valve is of a load sensing (LS) type. When the steering wheel has not been turned, the LS line is
coupled to the tank (gearbox housing) and is without pressure. When the steering wheel is turned, the LS line is in
connection with the steering cylinder pressure.

The priority valve directs the oil to the steering hydraulics port CF when needed. Steering hydraulics have the
priority. This means that in every situation there is a sufficient oil flow for the steering, independently of the load of
the steering hydraulics and port EF. The rest of the oil flow is available for gearbox lubrication and the trailer brake
valve (optional).
When the steering wheel is turned, the LS channel is connected to the steering cylinder (L). Load pressure goes
into the spring chamber of the priority valve and pushes the spool to the left. Oil flow to EF is restricted and oil is
directed to the steering valve (CF). Opening of the steering valve (D) varies according to the steering speed (angle
of the centring spring).
Model Page
Steering system T4 HiTech 7
28.1.2015
When the pressure in CF is higher than the LS pressure +7 bar, the spool moves to the right and discharges extra
oil to EF. When the steering movement is finished, the centring spring closes ports in the steering valve and LS line
is connected to the tank. There is always a small oil flow to the tank from the steering valve. This keeps steering
system active and warm in winter.

The steering valve consists of a gear set and a valve unit. The gear set consists of a gear ring with seven internal
teeth and a gear with six external teeth. The valve unit consists of a valve housing, outer valve spool and inner
valve spool.
The inner spool is directly actuated by the steering wheel. The outer valve spool is mechanically connected to the
gear by a cross pin and a gear shaft. The cross pin, which runs through the both valve slides, permits the inner
valve spool to move 12 in both directions independent of the outer valve spool. The angle difference between the
inner and outer valve spool is related to the rotating speed of the steering wheel, being 12 at maximum.
When the steering wheel is in the rest position, centring springs keep the inner and the outer valve spools in neutral
in relation to each other. LS-line is connected to the tank. The passages to the steering cylinder are kept closed
and the steering cylinder cannot move.
When the steering wheel is turned, the inner valve spool is turned in relation to the outer valve spool. The
passages down to the gear set and on to the steering cylinder gradually open. Cylinder pressure goes to LS-line.
Simultaneously the return oil from the other side of the steering cylinder flows back via the steering valve. The oil
flow from the pump through the valve makes the gear and the outer valve spool turn in the same direction as the
steering wheel and the inner valve spool.
When the steering wheel is not turned any further and kept still, the centring springs bring the outer and the inner
valve spool back into the neutral position. The passages to the steering cylinder close. LS-line is connected to the
tank.
When the hydraulic pump does not supply any oil, the gear set of the steering valve acts as a manually powered
pump (emergency steering). The oil which is drawn from the steering cylinder and the return line via the non-return
valve is delivered to the other side of the steering cylinder when the steering wheel (and inner valve spool) is
turned more than 12. The cross pin then also makes the following parts turn: the outer valve spool, gear shaft and
gear.
Shocks against the steering wheel are dampened by the two shock valves, which are fitted in the steering valve.
The shock valves are combined with anticavitation valves in order to keep the cylinder fully supplied with oil at all
times.

The steering valve has one 80 cm3 gear set. With a normal situation the additional oil flow is channelled pass the
gear set, making the total volume of the steering valve 160 cm3. If the oil supply from the hydraulic pump is lost, no
additional oil flow is channelled pass the gear set making the emergency steering force is smaller.

There are two gear sets in the electrohydraulic steering valve. In a normal situation the directional control valve
(inside the valve housing) opens, which makes both the gear sets active. If the oil supply from the hydraulic pump
is lost, the directional control valve closes and only the first gear set is active. This decreases the emergency
steering force.

When the electrohydraulic steering valve is turned on, the control valve for mode select is powered and changes
state. 12 bar pilot pressure is lead to the solenoid valve bridge and mode select and EH cutoff valve. The mode
select and EH cutoff valve connects EH directional valve to the steering cylinder ports (R and L) and cuts off spool/
sleeve set. The LS pressure to the spool/sleeve set is cut by the EH directional valve and PVFC valve/LS resolver.
The steering valve acts as non-reaction steering valve.
When the electrohydraulic steering valve is in use, the solenoid valve bridge is activated and the EH directional
valve spool moves. The pressure goes gradually to the steering cylinder through the mode select and EH cutoff
valve.
If a malfunction occurs in the electrical steering system, the PVE control unit goes into neutral position. Electrical
power is cut off from the control valve for mode select and the 12 bar pilot pressure connects to the tank. The
spool/sleeve set is connected to the steering cylinders.

QuickSteer, Auto-Guide or TwinTrac (turning the driver's seat) turns on the electrohydraulic steering valve. When
the electrohydraulic steering valve is on, SECU (A2C) informs TC (A1A). TC (A1A) then limits the driving speed to

25 km/h. The steering angle sensor (SASA) (B1C) (or with TwinTrac the steering unit A2W) measures steering
wheel position and rotation speed.
The steering valve control unit consists of one position sensor and four solenoid valves, which forms a solenoid
valve bridge. The solenoid valve bridge controls the direction, velocity and position of the EH direction valve. The
steering valve control unit has 10 steering speeds for the QuickSteer, 5 for forward drive and 5 for reverse drive.
If the steering valve software or parameters are changed, all the calibrations must be done.
Wheel angles must be calibrated after adjusting the wheel angle adjustment screws or if the end stop brake of the
TwinTrac steering unit (A2W) does not function properly.
The steering valve spool calibration minimizes the deadband movement of the spool, which improves steering
accuracy and response to the steering wheel. The steering valve spool must be calibrated after steering valve
software update or when the steering valve is replaced.
Max. wheel angle setup is used to discover the exact maximum turning angle of the wheels. Max. wheel angle
setup has only effect on Auto-Guide steering. Max. wheel angles must be calibrated after the adjustment of the
wheel angle adjustment screws.
If a fault occurs in the electrohydraulic steering valve, the indicator light on the QuickSteer or Auto-Guide on/off
button flashes. The driving speed is limited to about 2 km/h when the electrohydraulic steering valve is powered
and a fault is active. The electrohydraulic steering valve must be reset by pressing the button with a flashing light.
A three-colour LED on the electrohydraulic steering valve indicates the valve state:

The reverse drive system is activated when the driver's seat is turned to reverse position. The control unit SECU
(A2C) transfers the seat limit switch (S12) state to the CAN bus. Based on this, TC (A1A) uses information from the
reverse drive station controls. SECU (A2C) turns on the electrohydraulic steering valve (if not already turned on by
QuickSteer or Auto-Guide). SECU (A2C) also deactivates the front steering sensor (SASA).

Reverse drive system T4 HiTech 2
28.1.2015
The rear steering unit (A2W) has 2 sensors for the rotation speed and position of the steering wheel. If the
difference between these values is too high, the driving speed is limited to 2 km/h and a service code is displayed.
The rear steering unit (A2W) transfers its steering wheel position and rotation speed to SECU (A2C) via CAN-bus.
SECU (A2C) then converts this to appropriate CAN message and sends the message to the control unit (Y1C) of
the steering valve. If the QuickSteer is activated, SECU (A2C) also informs which steering program is used.

The crown wheel and differential case are mounted in the gearbox housing on taper roller bearings. Bearing
preload and tooth backlash between the pinion and the crown wheel are adjusted with threaded flanges.
There are four differential pinions on the differential. The side bevel gears and pinions in the differential case have
plain bearings.
The differential lock is an electro-hydraulically controlled multi-disc clutch. The low pressure pump supplies oil to
the gearbox valve block.
Pressurised oil from the gearbox valve block to the differential lock is conducted through a pipe inside the gearbox
housing.
In the differential case cover there is a piston which presses the clutch discs together, thus connecting the
differential bevel side gear to the differential casing.

differential bearing rolling resistance is correct.
The backlash should be 0.175-0.325 mm.
The rolling resistance is measured at the front end

The correct value is the bevel pinion shaft rolling
resistance combined with the differential bearing
preload. The bevel pinion shaft rolling resistance
is measured when the bevel pinion shaft position
is adjusted. The bevel pinion shaft rolling
2 resistance must be between 1.7 and 2.3 Nm.
Differential bearing preload:

A hydraulic piston moves the selector fork. The piston is moved using two proportional pressure-reducing solenoid
valves. The piston can be set into three positions. By pressurizing both piston ends (both solenoid valves
energized), the piston is moved to the N (middle) position. Positions 1/M and 2/H can be achieved by pressurizing
one piston end and releasing pressure from the other piston end. After the desired gear has been coupled, the
piston ends are depressurized (both solenoid valves unenergized). The positions of the selector forks are detected
with the position sensors. The sensors inform the control unit TC of the shifting status.

The creeper gear piston is moved using an on/off solenoid valve. When the solenoid valve is energized (on), the
creeper gear piston is pressurized. The piston turns the LL/MH selector to LL position which engages the creeper
gear selector fork. The position of the LL/MH selector is detected with limit switches, which send the information to
the control unit IO1. The creeper gear piston remains pressurized (solenoid valve energized) until the creeper gear
is engaged.

The speed range is selected with the + and buttons on the gear lever between A <-> B<-> C<-> D. When + or
button is pressed, the shuttle unit shifts to neutral. The driveline will be disengaged and the range gear shifting
system begins to change the main gear and the group gear. Duration of the gear shifting depends on the shuttle
unit rotation speed and the gearbox temperature. Engine speed and powershift gears are controlled during shifting
so that they match the current driving speed and the selected speed range.
The selected speed range is displayed on the pillar displays. Automatic shifting between speed ranges C and D is
possible if the C-D shifting automatics functionality is activated in transmission settings.

The creeper range is selected with the button on the gear lever when the speed range A is selected. The tractor
has to be stationary and the traction disengaged with the clutch pedal or with the power shuttle lever.
The selector forks for main gear and group gear are moved to N (middle) position. The solenoid valve Y54 turns
the LL/MH selector to LL position. The limit switch S70 informs the control unit IO1 when the selector is in LL
position. The solenoid valve Y54 is energized until the creeper gear is engaged. The creeper gear is engaged by
moving the group gear selector fork to LL position and the main gear selector fork to LA or LB position. When the
creeper gear is engaged, the solenoid valves are unenergized (off).
The selected creeper range is displayed on the pillar displays. The symbol flashes on the displays until the
creeper range engages.

The countershaft with two multi-disc clutches is either stationary, rotating slowly or rotating freely with planetary
carrier. Only one clutch is engaged or disengaged per gear change, which enables a smooth shifting sequence
without jerks.
Powershift gear 1
GUID-0B335EEE-7A94-40D0-AB3E-45F320B85409
Clutch C4 is connected to the frame, preventing the rotation of the planet carrier. The countershaft does not
transfer power.
The whole engine output is transferred through multi-disc clutch C1. The powershift ratio has been reduced.
The output shaft rotates slowly and it has a high torque.
The gear ratio is an underdrive ratio (approximately 1.5:1).

With the front power shuttle lever (S41), voltage controls which shuttle mode is active (F, N, R, P). The shuttle lever
has a safety switch for mode N.
If the seat direction switch (S12) has been closed (the driver's seat has been turned for reverse driving), the rear
power shuttle lever directs the function. The switches S5W, S6W and S7W are so-called reed relays, which are
activated by a magnet on the shuttle lever.
The driving direction is engaged with the solenoid valves Y11 and Y12. When no direction is selected, these
connectors have a low control current. If one of the clutches in the front gear unit slips (exceeds the limit for slip
control), traction is disengaged and a fault code is displayed.

Driving direction change can be requested with the power shuttle lever at any driving speed, but the transmission
starts to engage the new driving direction only when the speed is below 10 km/h. If the driving speed is higher, the
traction releases and the transmission goes into idle until the speed is low enough.

There is a by-pass valve (0.6 MPa) in the pressure filter. The warning light on the instrument display panel is
lit to indicate if the pressure difference (S53) is too big.
Oil flows from the 19 cm3 pump to the transmission (through the trailer brake valve). The indicator light for the
gearbox oil pressure is lit if the pressure drops below 1.4 MPa (14 bar).
The pressure relief valve on the semi-automatic range gear limits the pressure of the low pressure circuit to 2.1
MPa (21 bar). The oil that discharges through the pressure relief valve flows through the cooler and then to the
gearbox lubrication.

In the lubrication block, the pressure relief valve discharges the overflow oil to the pump suction side when there is
sufficient pressure (over 0.2 MPa / 2 bar) in the lubrication system.
The lubrication pipe has a 1.5 mm hole for the lubrication of the differential. The oil for the bevel pinion shaft
flows through the sleeve. The tube has a 3 mm throttle for limiting the bevel pinion shaft lubrication.

Thermal element closes at 60 C and lets the oil flow through the oil cooler. Below that temperature the oil flows
straight to the lubrication through the thermal element, and in this way the temperature of the hydraulics is kept
higher in cold weather conditions.

The brake system uses the same oil as the transmission system. Boost pressure is used to produce needed brake
pressure in addition to pedal force. The brake booster uses the pressure of low pressure hydraulics. Use of
steering brake is also possible.
The oil in the brake circuits is not changed when changing the transmission oil. Therefore, the brake circuit oil has
to be changed by bleeding after every transmission oil change. Also when repairing, the system has to be filled and
bled in the same way.
Non-return valve ensures the needed pressure for efficient braking, even if pressure in other part of low pressure
circuit drops temporarily due to use of multi-disc clutches or permanently due to breakage of pipe or hose. With the
help of pressure accumulator it is possible to brake a few times even if the engine is stopped. Pressure switch
(S55) of low pressure hydraulics warns about low pressure.
In the front axles Dana 740/561 and Dana 755/510 (optional) there are brake discs in the hubs (2 pcs/side). The
front axle brakes function as rear wheel brakes when pressing latched pedals. When pressing only one pedal the
front axle brakes do not function. When braking with the brake pedal of the reverse drive system (optional), the
front axle brakes do not operate but the 4WD is engaged.

The spring compresses. The spool moves to the left and the boost pressure line is opened. Oil flows to the
right side of the piston. This boost pressure pushes the piston to the left following the position of the pedal. Oil
flows to the brake cylinder and pressure increases in brake cylinders and in master cylinder. Braking starts.
Connection through the boost pressure line disconnects when the desired braking pressure has been reached.
Braking force to piston = Boost pressure * area X.
Boost pressure also affects to the right against pedal with smaller area and keeps the balance with pedal force.
Brake pedal resistance = Boost pressure * area Y. The spool touches the piston only when the boost pressure
has been reached (knee point). After that braking pressure can be increased with pedal force.
Left and right master cylinders are connected and the pressure in both cylinders is the same.
The guide prevents the piston from rotating around its own axis. Air grooves are located only on the certain
part of periphery of circle and they must be up.
There is a pressure accumulator in the pressure line of the system. The accumulator makes it possible to

hydraulic trailer brakes do not work when the engine is not running. Engaging or disengaging the parking brake
does not affect the hydraulic trailer brakes.
DANGER: The quick coupling for hydraulic trailer brakes must be connected when bleeding the brakes.
If the quick coupling is not connected, the brakes will not be bled. This will cause the brakes to
malfunction.

When the trailer brake quick coupling is connected, the coupling pushes the spool forwards, which opens a
connection to the trailer brake system. In addition, the spool pushes forwards the piston, which opens a passage of
the pilot (braking) pressure to the hydraulic brake valve.
When the trailer brake quick coupling is disconnected, springs push the piston and spool to neutral positions, which
closes the passages.
The filter prevents impurities from the trailer from entering to the tractor hydraulic system.

The control valve controls the braking system according to the pressure from the tractor brake system. The
distribution block (logic element) connects the brake pressure to the control valve only when both brake pedals (or
rear brake pedal) are pressed.
At the front end of the control valve there is a single-action cylinder. The cylinder has been connected parallel with
the parking brake cylinder. When the engine is running (current is on) and the power shuttle lever is not in the
parking brake position, the parking brake cylinder is pressurized (parking brake off) and the piston presses the
spindle of the control valve. When the current has been cut off from the parking brake solenoid valve, the
connection to the tank opens and the parking brake is on. At the same time the spring pushes the piston and the
spindle out of the control valve (brakes are on).
In a single line system there is another control valve that gets control signals from the control valve. The valve limits
also pressure to the trailer brakes to 5,6 bar. During braking the valve lowers the trailer brake pressure and the
trailer wheels brake. When finishing the braking, the air can flow via the control valve to the trailer air reservoir.
IMPORTANT:
If the tractor is equipped with the emergency brake lever, the pressure rises (yellow line) and drops (red line)
evenly when the emergency brake lever is used.

The overflow valve is included only in tractors equipped with trailer air pressure brakes. The valve ensures
sufficient pressure to the air pressure brakes even if there is a leakage in the air pressure quick coupling or
suspension system.
Function
The non-return valve prevents return of the air from port A (suspension) to port B (reservoir). If the pressure drops
in port A, the pressure in port B remains the same.
Compressed air flows in the direction of the arrow through valve and through port to the underside of the
membrane. Spring presses the membrane against the seat. When sufficient pressure has been reached (6,2 6,5
bar), the spring allows the membrane to rise up from its seat and the passage opens. Air flows through the non-
return valve to suspension. Return flow is not possible since the non-return valve closes if the pressure in the
suspension is higher.

The compressed air system is an extra equipment and it is located on the right final drive. The compressed air
system supplies compressed air for following functions:
The compressor is connected to the engine pressure lubricating system. Air to the compressor is taken from the
engine induction system (connected after the engine air filter). The belt driven compressor runs always when the
engine is running. The volume of the air reservoir is 6 litres (with trailer air pressure brakes an additional air
reservoir of 10 litres is included). In the bottom of the reservoir(s) is an automatic water draining valve.
The pressure regulator regulates the reservoir pressure. When the regulator stops the filling of the reservoir
(connecting limit reached), the air produced by the compressor can flow freely through the silencer. The pressure
regulator is preadjusted in the factory and does not require adjustment in a normal situation. If there are difficulties
gaining the correct pressure level, the compressed air system and all its components must be checked first before
adjusting the pressure regulator.
A pressure gauge is placed in the instrument panel and shows the reservoir pressure, measured by the pressure
sensor (B42).
The antifreeze pump injects antifreeze liquid into the system so that the moisture in the induction air, which
condenses into water, would not freeze or cause malfunctions in the system. When the ambient temperature is
below +5C, the antifreeze container must be filled with antifreeze liquid and the liquid streaming valve must be in
the open position.

The front axle air suspension is an extra equipment that can be fitted for all front axle types.
The front axle air suspension consists of shock absorbers, rubber bellows, air pipes and suspension frame parts.
The upper ends of the shock absorbers are fitted to the front piece and the subframe attaches to the engine oil
sump. All the air pipes are made of nylon pipes and quick couplings.
There are two shock absorbers of a liquid type. The shock absorbers are attached with the aid of bushings, which
have rubber damping. If the shock absorbers are damaged, driving is uncomfortable because the front axle
suspension and oscillations will take longer to stabilize after driving over pot holes or on rough terrain.
The air suspension without AutoComfort has a levelling valve, which maintains the height of the suspension system
(height of the rubber bellows) regardless of the loading on the front axle. The system can be unpressurised, for
example, by turning the feeler linkage of the levelling valve.
With AutoComfort the front axle air suspension control unit (A1Y) reads the front axle position sensor (B1F) and
controls the front axle suspension through solenoid valves axle up (Y553) and axle down (Y554). Front axle
suspension control is disabled when the parking brake is engaged or when braking. The system can be
unpressurised by reloading the control unit (SUS1) parameters, which lowers the air suspension to the lowest
position. The system must be calibrated then to make it functional.
IMPORTANT: Although the engine is stopped, the suspension system remains under pressure. Make the system
unpressurised always before maintenance work.

Load increases
When the loading on the front axle increases, the tractor front end starts to move downwards. The levelling valve
link pushes the sleeve upwards to open position. Valve B opens and compressed air flows from the reservoir
through port 1 and valve A into the suspension rubber bellows. The pressure in the rubber bellows increases and
the tractor front end raises to the normal horizontal position.
Load decreases
When the loading on the front axle decreases, the tractor front end starts to move upwards. The levelling valve link
moves downwards closing the valve B and opening a passage to the hole. The pressure decreases in the rubber
bellows and the excess air flows out through the hole. The tractor front end lowers to the normal horizontal position.

AutoComfort cab suspension is a semi-active pneumatic suspension system that automatically adjusts to different
driving conditions. The AutoComfort has no user controls except the calibration push button located above the cab
electric centre.
The solenoid valve housing (Y55) shelters four 2/2 solenoid valves (on/off) for cab level control (Y551, Y552) and
front axle suspension (Y553, Y554). The damper proportional valves (Y56, Y57) are built-in in the dampers.
Level control:
AutoComfort system reacts against the cab movements by adjusting the stiffness of the shock absorption every two
milliseconds. The adjusting is done according to:

The Duomatic air pressure brakes for trailer are an alternative equipment for trailers based on truck frames with
Duomatic couplings. The Duomatic system is a dual line system.
The control valve controls the braking system according to the pressure from the tractor brake system. The

6. Non-return valve
