THE SINKING OF THE TITANIC APRIL 14, 1912 AT 11:40 PM [SHIPBOARD TIME] The Washington Post announced the sinking of the Titanic and the chilling details. The Titanic left Southampton, England, on her maiden voyage to New York City on April 10, 1912. The White Star Line had spared no expense in assuring her luxury and elegance. It was said that she was UNSINKABLE and the safest ship ever built so she only carried 20 lifeboats that could be utilized to rescue survivors of other sinking ships. Four days into her journey, at 11:40 [shipboard time] on the night of April 14, the Titanic struck an iceberg. The surviving fireman compared the sound of the impact to the tearing of fabric, nothing more. As history records this tragedy: The collision was fatal and the icy waters soon poured through the ship.
