Welcome to the 2008 annual report

for the GREEN WAYTM environmental program.
This was the first formal year of our GREEN WAYTM program since its launch on
10 December 2007. It was the natural next step in the evolution of CSC’s environmental
portfolio, which had first begun with a staff initiative called Project Kermit.

CSC has made a long term commitment
to the environment in which we believe
our actions need to speak louder than our
words. This report highlights some of our
major successes from our inaugural year.
Our recent accreditation to the international
ISO14001 standard is a key differentiator
for CSC and positions us well to achieve
our vision of reducing our carbon emissions
by 25% from 2007 levels by 2010.
We’ve experienced success and learnt
some ‘lessons’ during the year:
� Developing activities and building
awareness of environmental issues that
impact CSC and staff take time – a long
time – especially as we try to broaden the
scope of GREEN WAYTM and our activities
� Measuring improvements and their
impacts has been hard – we recognise,
however, that it is the first time we’ve
had to quantify carbon equivalents.
We can’t underestimate the impact of
resistance to change and/or low levels
of awareness about sustainability. The
GREEN WAYTM committee has worked
hard to be noticed by the rest of CSC
globally with the message that the
environment and sustainability is not
just a part of one department’s remit
– it’s the responsibility of each of us.
I would like to thank all staff who have
participated and contributed towards
the GREEN WAYTM program in 2008. In
particular, I thank the GREEN WAYTM
committee and the Environmental
Sustainability team of Anthony Ogilvie
and Charlotte Scallon for their hard
work – especially for helping CSC
achieve its ISO14001 accreditation
in our first twelve months.

We’d like to acknowledge the initial seed
sown by the late Dr Derek J Binney who
passed away in mid-2008 after a long
illness. Derek was instrumental with
leading Project Kermit, our staff initiative
which then evolved into Green WayTM,
our environmental program.

Staff
� Invited Australian Conservation
Foundation to present The Inconvenient
Truth video to staff at our major sites.
(Thanks to the Regional Leadership
Councils for managing logistics!)
� Fifty CSC women took part in a staff
initiative: a free fashion swap day at
Macquarie Park – May 2008
� Celebrated World Environment Day
(June 5) with a family-friendly colouring
competition with environmentally
friendly prizes for children. Nearly 100
children took part from across Australia.
Prizes included Apple iTune vouchers,
eco-friendly sneakers and books
� Doubled our environmental
sustainability team to two people!
� Staff suggestions in the GREEN WAY
inbox were incorporated into fortnightly
meetings with Facilities and actioned
where appropriate
� Held our first green Sustainability Fair
for staff in Macquarie Park, Wollongong,
Bourke Street and Perth. An array of
goods were sold, including fair trade
items, organic wines and olive oils,
toys, beauty products and the chance
to support families in the developing
world by purchasing mosquito nets,
pigs and chickens! Our in-house café
also served sustainable and fair trade
coffee at Macquarie Park. Over $7000
was spent by our staff at Sustainability
Fairs around Australia, with more
purchases made online
� Participated in our online Ideation
events on developing our corporate
point of view on Green IT
� Communicated to staff via the green@
csc wiki, internal announcements
and posters
� Set up and delivered online Environmental
Training Module for Australian staff. Over
1300 people completed the training and
the module remains open for all staff to
complete at their leisure.

� Reinforced our ‘green message’ for CSC’s
new branding – for example, encouraging
staff to keep using our old branded CSC
business cards until end FY09
� Promoted GREEN WAY Expo at CSC’s
internal brand launch (May 08)
� Finished the first stage of Environmental
Management System with the production
of our Environmental Sustainability
Policy which presents our environmental
objectives. It is displayed at all CSC
sites (July/August 08)
� Became members of global and local
green groups such as Climate Savers and
Green Grid. We are a founding member
of the Green Building Council of Australia
� Reviewed our stationery purchasing
to offer ‘greener’ alternatives

� Answered bid questions from inside
and outside Australia. For example,
CSC Sweden asked for our expertise
on a Request for Tender document
� Played key role in first development
stages of Corporate Responsibility
(CR) approach.
Supply Chain
� Selected Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC) approved paper for new CSC
business cards for Australian staff
� Maintained our IT asset redeployment,
recycling and remanufacturing program
through an ISO 9001 e-waste contractor
� Set up video conferencing pilot between
Macquarie Park, Subiaco and Braddon sites
as part of a global initiative to link our major
offices and save transportation costs.
Facilities
� Monitored the CO2-e emissions of our
offices, data centres and flights through
the use of an environmental dashboard
� Set bathrooms on 10 minute lighting
timers in offices where natural light
is available
� Meeting room motion sensors installed
at Macquarie Park, Newcastle and Subiaco
� Re-programmed the lighting schedules
on local Building Management Systems
to reduce energy consumption
� Re-programmed filtered water units at
all sites to reduce the amount of energy
used to heat and cool the water
� EcoPink urinals rolled out to Adelaide
and Newcastle after a successful trial at
Macquarie Park. This means that we
save an estimated 66,548 kilolitres of
water a year, which is equivalent over
two million cups of coffee
� Installed flow restrictors in all kitchen
and bathroom taps. This reduced the
flow from 17 litres per minute to 1.7 litres
per minute (on average)
� Installed low voltage downlights in
foyers and meeting rooms, saving 796 kWh
per year. That’s the energy equivalent
to doing over 3,000 loads of washing
in your washing machine!
� The Nortel IP Telephony system was
installed at Melbourne sites after
substantial CO2 savings were achieved
from installation at five other sites, when
compared to another leading vendor. We
predict we’ll save 106 tonnes of CO2 over
five years from our Melbourne installation.
Data Centres
� Installed rainwater tanks in Pyrmont
to supplement AC chiller water
� Engaged a Technical Architect to
investigate energy savings from
equipment virtualisation and
consolidation opportunities
� Powered off and removed all redundant
DC equipment
� In-rack monitors have been removed
where possible or powered down.
Community and External
� Turned our lights off for Earth Hour
– second year in a row and encouraging
all our offices globally to take part in 2009.
We aim to sign up every year
� We’ve had media exposure with
mentions in Australian Reseller News,
CFO magazine and ZD Net Australia
� Enhanced our brand reputation – CSC was
invited to many speaking engagements
as the Subject Matter Experts on Green
IT, for groups such as:
IT groups within the Australian
Computing Society (ACS) around
green knowledge bases. To give an
idea of the breadth of thought
leadership, we provided an assessment
of the US government’s IT purchasing
guidelines (EPEAT)

 CSC’s COMMITMENT
CSC Australia committed to planting one tree per
employee at our program launch in December 2007.
We partnered with Greenfleet, who has progressively
planted trees during 2008 based on the location of
each employee’s residence.

 When CSC Australia’s Queensbridge Street
office in Melbourne moved to their temporary
premises in Bourke Street, Facilities invited
local community groups, charities and
non-profit organisations to avail themselves
to various surplus items free-of-charge
during the cleanout.
Individuals and small businesses could also
obtain items in return for a donation to
the St Vincent’s – MacKillop Family Services
organisation, which works with disadvantaged
children, young people and their families.
The offer was well received by the various
groups and organisations, who expressed
their gratitude with letters, certificates of
appreciation and highlights on their own
websites about the support and generosity
of CSC.

Other major beneficiaries from our move
included the Save the Children Fund
(provides health, education and child
protection for children in marginalised
circumstances) and The Youth Junction
Inc (a Melbourne organisation that assists
over 1200 young people a month by
providing housing, education, health and
legal services).
We stripped down and recycled the 385
workstations left behind. All contents,
including general rubbish, were processed
via the split waste method.
How much did we recycle?
� Over 1.5 tonnes of paper and cardboard
� 29.775 tonnes of metal
� 320 kg of hard plastics
� 3.082 tonnes of aluminium.
The total volume committed to landfill for
the Queensbridge clean up filled only a
single 6 cubic metre bin – for a move of
385 people!

1. ISO 14001 accreditation
CSC successfully passed its ISO 14001
accreditation for our Environmental
Management System in December 2008,
making us one of the few IT outsourcing
organisations in Australia to have been
certified to this international standard.
This isn’t an easy accreditation to achieve
– it required assessing all our activities
and processes that have an impact on the
environment and ensuring appropriate
controls are in place to reduce or eliminate
these impacts. Audits have been completed
on our end-to-end processes in facilities
and asset management and the management
programs we have put in place to achieve
our environmental objectives.
Our next step is to have our data centres
accredited in early 2009.

2. Global interlock
We should be proud that CSC Australia is
one of the leading regions within CSC to
have an environmental program in place.
CSC appointed its first global green
Program Director, Candace Labelle, based
in Ottawa, Canada.
In 2009, CSC’s 50th anniversary year, we’ll be
ensuring our local celebratory achievements
are green as well as gold!
hIGHLIGHTS
3. Facilities trials
Thanks to Facilities and Supply Chain
Management for their collaboration on trials
to reduce our environmental impacts:
� Our EcoPink urinal trials at Macquarie
Park were hugely successful
� The trial installation of Flurosave Units
on Level 6 at Macquarie Park. Trials
showed lower savings than anticipated,
so no further deployments are planned
� The replacement of halogen lights with
LEDs in foyers will be trialled at Macquarie
Park in early 2009. A colour trial was
performed in 2008 to ensure that the
more efficient lighting would have the
right look for us.

In 2009, CSC celebrates its 50th anniversary. GREEN WAYTM
will be focusing on four key areas to meet our 2010
vision of a 25% net reduction in C02 equivalent emissions:
1. Expand our Environmental Management
System to cover data centres for ISO
14001 certification
2. Make video conferencing part of
business as usual and covering
more sites
3. Build awareness of and prepare for
the Australian Government’s carbon
trading scheme
4. Continue coordinating with Facilities
to implement measures to reduce
energy consumption.
