Lesson Topic: Chemical and Physical Changes Lesson 1

Write a brief summary of your experiences teaching this lesson, addressing the following
questions:

What went well? What did not go well?

Overall, this lesson went just as I had planned. This is the introductory lesson and
I think the students understood the concepts. Beginning with a Powerpoint really
hooked them and then they were able to explore using the Alka Seltzer partner
activity. I was surprised that we had to go back and review States of Matter. My
plan was to move into the BrainPop on Changing States of Matter, but we did a
quick review and were able to move on.

How well were the lessons student performance objectives attained?

The student performance objectives were met and attained. The students were
able to see a chemical change and discuss with their partner.

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry, and sense-

making by all students?
Yes, students were allowed to question and speak with peers to further deeper
their understanding of changes.

Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support students

construction of knowledge and understanding of important scientific concepts
and processes?
Yes, this is not a new concept to teach in 5th grade. We add more hands on
activities to help with student understanding.

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will you do
differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.) to improve student
learning for all students?
The students had forgotten states of matter, so I will add a kinesthetic activity
that supports the brain pop video. Students will act out the changes of state with
their bodies.
