CSI Agent Training

Day 1
CSI Vocabulary
Term Definition
Chemical Change any change that causes a new substance to be formed

Manipulate move or change something

Matter anything that has mass and takes up space

made when two or more substances are combined
Mixture or mixed together
Particles basic unit of matter

Physical Change a change in which no new substances are formed

Separate to stop being together, joined, or connected

a degree of hotness or coldness the can be measured
Temperature using a thermometer
Goals and Objectives
You will learn what physical changes are and
how matter can change from one state to
another.

You will learn how chemical changes can

cause some kinds of matter to become new
matter.
What are physical changes?

Physical changes are changes in the way

matter looks.

Changes in size and shape are physical

changes.

A physical change can also take place when

matter changes from one state to another
state.
A Note About mAtter

Matter hides in plain sight.

Matter is all around us.

Everything is made up of matter.

To be a successful CSI Agent, you must be

able to define matter based on its STATE.
A Note About mAtter
Record definition and sketch in your handbook.
How to spot a physical change

Physical changes do NOT create a new

substance.

Physical changes happen when a substance

changes its appearance but not its
composition or chemical make up.
Physical Change in Action
How to spot a physical change

HOW TO MAKE PHYSICAL CHANGES:

Cut it Pound it Crumble it

Melt it Punch it Shred it
Freeze it Slice it Bite it
Break it Rip it Tear it

PHYSICAL CHANGES IN THE FIELD:

Melting ice Evaporating water

Cutting a block of wood Shredding paper

Freezing water Breaking a bone

Day 3
What are Chemical changes?

Chemical changes are the opposite of

physical changes.

Chemical changes take place when matter

changes to a different kind of matter.
How to spot a Chemical change

Chemical changes create a new substance.

A chemical change happens when a substance reacts

with another substance to create a new substance.

One type of matter changes to another type of matter.

Chemical Change in Action
Evidence of a Chemical Change
One of these things MUST happen in order to claim a
chemical change has occurred. Real life change!

1. A gas is produced
2. There is a change in temperature
3. Light is produced
4. There is a change in color
5. A precipitate forms (a solid that forms when two
liquids react)

Day 3
Review

What is a physical change?

A physical change is a change in the size,
shape, state, or appearance of matter.

What is a chemical change?

A chemical change causes matter to
become a new kind of matter.
CSI Training Simulation

You will be shown a simulated change that

can be found in the real world.
Record in your detective notebooks your
claim: PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL CHANGE.
Record the evidence you saw that supports
your claim.
Be ready to explain your claim if called
upon.
Simulation 1
Take out Object 1 and Object 2.

Place Object 2 on Object 1 and

move it around.

Observe

What is your claim?

What is your evidence?

Simulation 2
Take out Object 3 and Object 4.

Pour Object 3 into Object 4.

Stir and observe.

What is your claim?

What is your evidence?

Simulation 3
Take out Object 5 and Object 6.

Pour Object 5 into Object 6.

Stir and observe.

What is your claim?

What is your evidence?

Simulation 4
Take out Object 7 and Object 8.

Press Object 8 into Object 7.

Observe.

What is your claim?

What is your evidence?

Simulation 5
Take out Object 9 and Object 10.

Pour Object 10 into Object 9.

Observe.

What is your claim?

What is your evidence?
