QUESTION 1

a) Briefly explain at least THREE (3) reasons why engineer should be equipped with

engineering ethics knowledge?

b) The attributes of professional are an importance criterion to be called as a

professional. List down and explain the criterion with respect to engineering

profession.

(8 marks)

c) List and explain a framework for ethical judgement that could be implemented for a

professional.

(4 marks)

d) In the Code of Professional Conduct, it is stated that Every registered Engineers

shall at all times uphold the dignity, high standing and reputation of his

profession. Explain about this statement. Why it is important for all engineers to

strictly comply with this code?

e) Engr. Nabil who is 33 years old, has graduated from a Japan University in

engineering course. He has worked as an electrical & instrument engineer in a

chemical plant for 8 years but doesnt registered with related authority. He plans to

get the professional engineer in age 36 years old. Does Engr. Nabil has right to

label and serve himself as one of Malaysian engineer? Explain.

QUESTION 2

a) As Engineers, we need to be aware of the development around us. Development

can be defined as an effort to attain a better standard of life. Standard of life can be

defined as a sum of three elements, namely, sustenance, self-esteem and freedom.

Elaborate on what is meant by each of the three elements.

b) What is sustainable development as defined by the United Nations World

Commission on Environment and Development? Why is it so important now?

c) How would you as an engineer foresee your responsibilities towards meeting this

statement after graduation?

(5 marks)

d) Technology transfer is the acquisition and adaptable of production techniques

from one country or firm to another and its application in a local production

process. In your opinion, what are the reasons countries practice technology

transfer and what is the drawback of it?

QUESTION 3

a) The safety and Health are two important elements in the engineering profession

i) What is the safety and health program in the workplace? Describe why it is

important to manage this safety and health at workplace?

ii) Why it is important to manage the safety and health at workplace from legal

perspective?

iii) Provide FOUR(4) benefits of the good safety and health program at

workplace

b) In the code of professional conduct, it is stated that Wherever engineers practice,

they should hold paramount the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

Explain this statement.

c) If you as an engineer are required to access safety and health risks to workers

working in a chemical plant, what are the FOUR (4) possible routes of entry of

chemical that can be hazardous to the health of the workers?

d) Hazard is the condition that potential of causing any injury or disease at work. Give

QUESTION 4

a) Ir. Raja is an engineer from ABC Sdn Bhd who in charge for a project to build a

monorail system in UNISEL. In order to start the project, his company has decided

to hire the Mechanical and Electrical Consultant Company. He is one of the

committee who evaluates and recommends the selected consultants, he finds that

one of them is his close friend (Mr. Rama). He decides to recommend Mr. Rama to

the committee without informing about his relationship. With reference to the

above case, does Ir. Raja decision falls under the scope of conflict of interest and

justify your answer. Elaborate an ethical way that Ir. Raja could do in order to

resolve the issue.

b) One the committee members, Mr. Ahmad, knew about the conflict of Ir. Raja

involved and decided to inform the committee. Suggest the proper way for Mr.

Ahmad to attempt the act of whistle-blowing and discuss the four (4) situations that

could prevent any whistle-blowing occurrence.

c) As consulting engineer, you have been asking by your client company to perform

some power system study for 50MW Solar Farm which is not your area or

expertise. The client insists you to conduct the study as soon as possible before

your contract ended. Actually, your client doesnt want to hire a new consulting

engineer to perform the study as the cost saving measures. How do you want to

handle this situation? Provide your justification.

d) Most engineers will involve in research and experimentation in the course of their

professional careers. Elaborate TWO (2) issues which are important to be

considered in experimentation or research in order to be an ethical engineer.
