1. Subject presentation

As part of the Computing Basics area, we kindly welcome you.!!!

The subject of Basic Computing is very important because it provides students with the necessary
knowledge about basic topics for a correct computer and software usage, allowing them to do an
efficient work both as a student and as a future professional.

The computer is a versatile and powerful tool for you and your organization. It allows you to work
efficiently and communicate with people from all over the world.

2. Pre Requisites (Characterization)

Dear student, we are glad to introduce you to Basic Computing, for you to know the pre-requisites you
have to meet in order to undertake this class, as well as to let you know the achievements you will
make at the end of this term.

Basic Technical Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of: web surfing and email.
Take the learning style test, available at www.espe.edu.ec.

Resources
Computer Access or having your own computer.
Internet access, at least two hours a day.
5 hours of free time per week in order to complete the allocated activities.
At least 30 minutes/day access to forums, chat, and collaborative work with your teacher and
classmates as for interacting purposes.

Basic Computing has been conceived for the student to gather the necessary knowledge about
computer concepts considered as basic, before his general studies, whichever career he chooses.

In the same way, it is intended for the student to acquire the necessary skills as user of a Personal
Computer, PC, so he can use it as a learning tool of the definitions exposed in this subject and of those
he will find if he chooses to study Computer Science.

Computers are present in every part of society, work, or our lives. This is the reason why it is very
interesting to receive the knowledge in this academic term, where many of this concepts and systems
that surround us are explained in a gradual and simple way.

This subject involves learning the use of many computer tools, which have been selected according to
their use and influence in the labor market. Therefore, these tools are called Offimatic (Office-
Automatic) tools, mainly because they are used day after day both at work and at school, for the proper
presentation of daily tasks.

3. Study Methodology

At the beginning of each partial term the student will be handled material such as the study guide;
besides, he will have available supplemental files and related websites, among others.

The subject of Basic Computing tries to provide the basic skills that every student needs from the
beginning of his career until he becomes a professional. Hence, the importance this subject has, as
much as any other specialization one. It is recommend that if the students do not have the knowledge
that is described in the current Analytical Plan, they should try to close this gap by previous reading or
by looking for some help from the teacher.

Interaction

Communication tools such as forums, email, wiki, and video tutorials can be used. A forum will be
open for questioning during the entire semester, in order to answer questions related to the study topics.
Student participation in this forum is not mandatory neither graded.

Learning Activities

For each partial term, different activities have been designed to put acquired knowledge into action.

Follow up

Follow up from the teachers will be permanent, in order to provide support in the development of the
course, through individual and group follow up capabilities of the virtual classroom, related to support
material, forum participation, individual and group tutoring, etc.

In the same way, the teacher-tutor will contact the Support Center in the scheduled time and date in
order to establish videoconferences and, in your case, live support from the subject teacher.

It is very important for students to keep in contact with the teacher-tutor, because he is, among other
things, in charge of communicating orders and news from the subjects coordinator. He is also in charge
of reporting his relationship with all students in written form.

Estimated Study Time

The time the student must allocate for this subject is of one hour per day.

Collaborative Work

Collaborative work is a widely used educational method by teachers in many areas. There are two ways
of doing it: in a collaborative way (collaborating) and in a cooperative way (cooperating). According to
Manuel Antonio Unigarro, students work in a Collaborative way when each student in a group is in
charge of a specific task and finally all the work is joined in a single Final Project. On the other hand,
Cooperative work is performed when all group members work at the same time in all the assigned
tasks.

Optional consultation material

Besides basic and recommended bibliography, support media such as video conferencing, chat,
Messenger, wiki and other computer resources might be offered during the course, which can
result useful as a complement.

Digital books can represent a new help source as well as new challenges that can have great
impact over the capacity that each person has of understanding what he reads. Internet offers new
text formats, new reading purposes and new ways of interacting with information, which can
confuse and even overwhelm those used to extracting knowledge only from conventional reading.
